The Changing Interpretations of Brampton’s Memorial Square Cenotaph
This podcast discusses the history and changing interpretations of the Memorial Square Cenotaph in Brampton that was unveiled in 1928. The podcast centralizes on an oral history interview with Major (Ret’d) Richard E. Ruggle, the Chair of the Museum Committee at the Lorne Scots Regimental Museum in Brampton. Ruggle describes the history of Lorne Scots Regiment in Brampton and its relationship with the war monument that initially honoured Canadians who fought in World War I. Today, the war memorial honours those who served and died in the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War, and War in Afghanistan. This podcast also examines the role of the war memorial in Downtown Brampton and Remembrance Day services that take place yearly. To conclude, this podcast will describe the Memorial Square Cenotaph’s restoration project that was completed in 2016 and the major changes that took place.
