University of Arkansas Yearbooks
The University of Arkansas was established in 1871 in Fayetteville as the land-grant institution for the state of Arkansas. The Fayetteville campus is the flagship campus for the University of Arkansas System. The yearbook for this campus was first published in 1897 as the Cardinal, which was the original mascot for the university. It has been published every year except for 1899. The title changed to the Razorback for the 1916 issue to reflect the change in mascot.
The yearbook digitization was managed by the Special Collections Division and by the Digital Services Department of the University of Arkansas Libraries. This is an ongoing collection. New yearbooks will be added regularly in anticipation of the U of A’s 150th anniversary in 2021.
This material may depict ethnic, racial, and gender insensitivity that was once commonplace in American society. Such portrayals were wrong then and are wrong today. While not representing the views of the University of Arkansas today, the issues of this publication are being presented as they were originally created because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed.
