The only woman in a California mining camp dies giving birth. As any of the men could have been the father, they do the right thing and become the babies collective parent. There really was a place called Roaring Camp but it wasn't a mining camp it was a logging camp. Fremont and his men spent time there. It's near the present day town of Felton known for its steam railroad ride. It's reached along the route from Scotts Valley to Santa Cruz. Harte apparently liked the name and used it.
