Five- year-old Glenn Shonce of Salem (second from the right) was one of the lucky youngsters who had the chance to travel to the WKBN studios in Youngstown, Ohio from December 26, 1959 to January 6, 1960 to enjoy several days of play and learning with other area children and the teacher, Miss Margaret. Salem News reported hundreds of people gathered to watch the fire as Metzger Hotel went up in flames. The fire claimed three lives. The fire destroyed the top two floors. Oct. 22, 1964

Andalusia Dairy was founded in April 1897 by J. Twing Brooks. The farm where the old dairy operated is located on the Albany Road, Salem, Ohio. Ice cream was first made in 1914 when the company served the delicacy to Mullins Co. guests and employees when their new plant was opened.

Leo Copacia performs on the drums while Jaycees and Jayteen goers crowd around to listen. Copacia won first prize during a 1946 Amateur Night; Bob Hill took second place with his tap dance routine and Mary Mae Votaw and Donna Lou Getz tied for third and fourth with vocal numbers. Judges included teacher Chester Brautigam, County Clerk of Courts John Coleman, Mrs. E.E. Dyball and Shirley Izenour.

No date given for this photo taken in front of the Metzger Hotel. Built in 1884 by Ira Brainard and the Hiram Greiner & Son banking firm. Later Paul Metzger operated the hotel which retained his name although the hotel changed ownership.

Postcard showing Fred Campbell at rear of Andalusia Dairy. No date. Fred Campbell was president of the company in the late 1950's to early 1960's. He wa on the board of directors of the Ohio Dairy Products Association for 30 years. He served as association president in 1935.

Lape Hotel in the 1920's. It advertised 25 rooms with hot and cold running water. Lettering on the front once read, "25 Rooms of Solid Comfort," and on the west side, "Lape's Hotel With Furnished Running Water and Baths." There were always people sitting in front of the windows watching the passing traffic on State St. The restaurant on the corner was later called the Quaker Coffee Shop.

Shown is a picture of then Ohio governor, Frank J. Lausche, riding in the passenger side backseat of a Pontiac Silver Streak, donated by Broomhall Pontiac Company. Spectators are shown standing in front of the Strouss and Sears, Roebuck department stores. The parade was the kick off for Salem's Operation "SPIC" (Salem Paints, Improves, Clean-up) campaign, a two month campaign to clean up the city of Salem, Ohio.

MacMillan 's Bookstore has the last cast iron front in Salem, Ohio. Also, MacMillan's became the first wallpaper store in Salem, Ohio. While the Schilling Dry Goods Co. carried some paper for covering boxes, Joel MacMillan sold the first wallpaper for the home.
