Shadow Spinner by Susan Fletcher
This retelling of 1001 Arabian Nights is an unexpected gem. The story is told from the point of view of Shahrazad's cripple slave. The queen has run out of stories to entertain the Sultan with and so she buys the girl after she is overheard telling a story. Now Shahrazad has agreed to tell the Sultan a story he has requested, believing her slave knows it. Only problem is, she doesn't. The reader is taken on an adventure as they venture inside, and outside the walls of the harem in search of the story. The prose is beautiful with just enough description to transport the reader into another world without being boring. The narrative makes the reader breathe and hope and fear with Marjan, the main character, and relish her moments of triumph as she faces her demons. Each chapter starts with a little anecdote titled Lessons On Life and Storytelling which holds just what the title says: insightful lessons.
I highly recommend this book.
