"newsroom" starts now. >>> and good morning from washingt washington. i'm carol costello. thank you so much for joining us. this morning, a shocking new development in the sex scandal that toppled one of the most respect respected men in washington. now it has snared another top general, john allen, commander of all international troops in afghanistan. today the feds are sifting through a mountain of e-mails and messages he traded with a woman named jill kelley. a mind boggling 20,000 to 30,000 pages and agents are searching for anything inappropriate. now here is the common link. that woman, kelley, jill kelley, she's the one who received harassing e-mails supposedly from petraeus' jealous mistress, paula broadwell. petraeus admits to the affair with broadwell and has said that this wom

i was stationed at camp pendleton and we deployed to afghanistan in 2010. it was a really bloody summer while we were there. we lost a couple of pilots. i saw a lot of bodies coming back. >> i was in the u.s. navy for four years and my job title was quarter master. we helped out with amphibious operations. we had a lot of marines on our boats. >> the fire is going to be on the left side. >> i was so focused on navy at one point in time, i never imagined myself being a firefighter, i never imagined myself going through the training. it has been challenging for me but the challenge is more than welcomed. >> i'm hoping i get, you know, picked up with some kind of fire department or also training to get into some kind of police work, just experience and hopefully a job. >> being a veteran, it is a big thing to me. it means a lot because i have a lot of veterans in my family. when we have veterans day, it is not more or less saying i did my time in service, it is saying i paved the way for people that are going to come behind me to do their time and service. to

he says that iraq and afghanistan veterans may finally have found their political voice. >> and i think that a lot of people have come home, really established themselves in their communities, become leaders, you know, in business, in public service, within their communities and have now been having a lot more success running for office. >> reporter: despite the influx of 9/11 era veterans into congress, the overall number of veterans is declining. both the house and the senate will have fewer veterans this year than last. democrat tammy duckworth lost both of her legs in iraq, and she has just won a seat in congress. she believes the downturn is a moment in history. >> the giants, the lions of the world war ii generation step away, and the korean war generation steps away, and when the last of the vietnam vets, as they begin to retire, now you go to the all volunteer force, and there are just fewer of us in general. >> reporter: duckworth says she has spent a lifetime in service, and she believes that service is what has helped her and other veterans win their races for elected office.

military commander in afghanistan. john allen is now under investigation for allegedly sending inappropriate messages to jill kelley. yes, the same woman who claims she received threatening e-mails from petraeus' mistress paula broadwell. and we're not just talking about a couple of e-mails. pentagon investigators are coming through 20 to 30,000 pages of documents. with me now is retired u.s. army general and cnn contributor spider marks joining me via skype from virginia. when you look at the sheer number of documents that they're looking at, 20,000 to 30,000 pages of documents, how do you react to that? what was your first thought? >> well, if true, if it is that type of volume of traffic, this is one busy guy spending a lot of time talking to an honorary ambassador between the community and tampa in the air force base. he's got a lot of discretionary time on his hand and, frankly, that's not the case. so it's very, very troubling to see that an individual like this would at least put himself in a situation where the

broadwell talked about being in general petraeus' inner circle in afghanistan. >> and i was embedded with general petraeus in afghanistan and it was a little confusing for some of the folks there because i'm also a military reservice, so a will the of my former peers didn't know how to treat me. was i major broadwell or journalist broadwell? i had to follow very clear lines of disclosure. i felt like i was held to a higher level of accountability because i could lose my clearance, yet i was entrust ed on this opportunity to sit in with meetings with general petraeus, listen to classified chatter of terrorist talk. >> boy. terrorist talk. just chatter. i'll just sit in on that. that's kind of a big deal. so from all we know, the affair between these two began after his time in afghanistan, about two months into general petraeus' tenure at the cia and ended earlier this year. are you still with me? i know this is extraordinary, but this scandal seems to get bigger by the day. the details are fast and furious. but here's one thing you can be sure of. the demands for a congressional inve

i presume you have been in afghanistan with him, spoken to him. it's a huge issue with the military. >> well, you know, it really is, brooke. i've interviewed him many times in iraq and afghanistan and traveled with him in those areas. the thing about dave pe trace you have to remember is he was and is always what you just said, the four star general. four star generals live potentially -- and it's risky for them, they lead isolated lives, don't they? they have aides. they have people around them. a small group of confidants. they have access to the highest level of intelligence and in the ultimate inner circle. we have seen it time and again. think back to general mcchrystal making some judgment calls that didn't work out for him. him having to leave oddly enough, petraeus taking over from him and this has happened time and again for four star generals for a variety of reasons. you know, there had been a lot of rumor around town in recent weeks that reporters were working on profiles of petraeus that were not going to be complimentary. so perhaps

you have been in conflict zones from iraq to afghanistan, mexico. so tell us about your experience in juarez that you feel many people wouldn't necessarily know about. many people read about it but this is a place you have dared to go and photograph. >> yeah. thank you for having me. i think the main thing to take away from juarez is the amount of violence and killing was so extreme that everybody in the city and the surrounding areas is affected by it. you just everywhere you go, you meet someone that's been affected directly by the violence. and state corruption. and the drug industry. it's just tremendous. >> and tremendous, too, is the risk that you take and other photographers take in order to get some of these images. you do this at what cost? you have to establish relationships for some of these subjects. right? >> yeah, certainly you have to establish relationships but on the other hand you have to be careful of getting too close, as well. >> and how do you do that? >> time on the ground. you just have to meet people and move slowly and talk

she said she used to jog with the general while he was leading the war in afghanistan. they got to know each other. the fbi checked petraeus's e-mail accounts and said they had not been compromised. petraeus was interviewed by the fbi, but it is unclear if broadwell has been questioned. i want to bring in joel kelly, her husband released this statement earlier today. this is the statement. it says, "we and our family have been friends with general petraeus and his family for over five years. we respect his and his family's privacy and want the same for us and our three children." we are also now learning that paula broadwell revealed information regarding the investigation of the attack on the consulate in benghazi, li a libya. a video of her speaking in denver has now surface odd youtube. >> i don't know if a lot of you heard this, about the the cia annex had taken a couple of libyan militia members prisoner and they think that the attack on the consulate was an effort to try to get these prisoners back, so it's still being vetted. >> so i want to bring in suzanne kell

thinking about the l word, legacy, and what other people think of president bush, the war in iraq and afghanistan, they can look to africa and say that's an impressive piece of the bush legacy. when this president looks at the world, you remember we talked about this in the past, he told dmitry medvedev, give me until after the election, i'll have flexibility. when you look at the world what do you think in a second obama term what do you think? >> the first thing, i think when he look at his legacy, he's going to look for the consolidating of health care. make that work. make obama care work. i think he feels 20, 30, 40 years from now people will remember him and presidents get one or two lines as the guy who did universal health care. in foreign policy terms, i think he wants to be the man who moved america and america's attention squarely to asia, who made america a pacific power because he recognizes to be a superpower in the 21st century, you have to be a pacific power. i think he wants to, you know, get us out of the middle east, lower the military footprint of america's involvement if a re
