you have been in conflict zones from iraq to afghanistan, mexico. so tell us about your experience in juarez that you feel many people wouldn't necessarily know about. many people read about it but this is a place you have dared to go and photograph. >> yeah. thank you for having me. i think the main thing to take away from juarez is the amount of violence and killing was so extreme that everybody in the city and the surrounding areas is affected by it. you just everywhere you go, you meet someone that's been affected directly by the violence. and state corruption. and the drug industry. it's just tremendous. >> and tremendous, too, is the risk that you take and other photographers take in order to get some of these images. you do this at what cost? you have to establish relationships for some of these subjects. right? >> yeah, certainly you have to establish relationships but on the other hand you have to be careful of getting too close, as well. >> and how do you do that? >> time on the ground. you just have to meet people and move slowly and talk

we know she made a number of trips to afghanistan. she certainly had access to members at all levels of the u.s. military. and so, it's not clear where she got it from. presumably, it's part of the continuing fbi investigation. >> such a crucial question and what about this? you're a member of the cia external advisory. you have top security clearance on some things. she had top security clearance. what does that men in practice? >> paula broadwell was also a reservice in the u.s. army and so, when she was doing her mission as in reservice, she had access to classified material for that purpose, but when you have a clearance, it doesn't mean you have access to all information. she has to have a need to know. certainly as a journalist, she did not have access and her clearance did not apply, so the question is how did she come into possession of this material and even though you may be exposed to classified information, it's a whole different thing to have retained it because you have to have the authority to retain classified informat

i got a visa, went to afghanistan and went on a few trips, embedded with the troopers in the field and headquarters and at some point i think he realized i was taking the research seriously, sharing hardship with the troops and risk and decided to open up a little bit more access but we had a relationship before i went there as far as this dissertation was concerned so it took it to another level. >> reporter: that access is at the root of this unfolding drama, an investigation by the fbi into alleged harassing e-mails from broadwell to another woman close to petraeus uncovered communications between broadwell and petraeus that were consistent with an extramarital affa affair. those e-mails led to the generals aresignation accepted friday by the president of the united states. we will continue to follow that story, of course, but it's half past the hour. we want to look at today's headlines for you.. nearly two weeks after sup storm sandy, frustration boiling over in some areas of the northeast. >> can't get light on or anything for my kids, i can't get power, heat, garbage pickup. >>
