when we invaded afghanistan in 2001, there were millions7 of people trying to get in to fight us from pakistan. there are traffic jams 20 miles long. we made the decision, let them in, we'll kill them on the battlefield. so with this conflict, there are jihadists from all over the world, the u.s., canada, russia, just every place you can imagine that are pouring in. >> the goal is to go over there, get some training and come back to here? >> i think they'll come back if instructed to come back. but when they enter, isis takes their passports from them. isis will hold all these things, do photo substitution, create their own alias documentation center. so when they come back to us, they may not come back at uspt with their own pass porlts. they may come back into central america or into mexico and try to walk across the border. if they suspect we're looking for them, theelt use alias documentation. >> obviously, we're worried about them coming here to the homeland, but how do we cut off the trickett from them getting recruited andd? they found a way to somehow make this cool. to a normal person

i think we've learned from the mistake in afghanistan and pakistan. obviously very different geopolitical strategic consideration. but part of our difficulty in afghanistan for so long as the enemy was running across a very porous border where we couldn't touch them or did in limited sense with drones. if we learn that lesson in iraq and syria, we'll apply similar pressure in syria. that's the heartç of isis. where they train, their headquarters elements. a lot of it is in northern syria, they projected more recently into iraq as they've tried to expand their orbit. frankly, they don't want to be confined to iraq and syria. they want to go to jordan, leban lebanon, kuwait. this administration slowly is coming to the realization that they can't sit on the sidelines. we can't lead from behind. this is an enmany i that has to be confronted. our military leaders get it. we'll see how long it takes for the president and white house to fundamentally understand that. >> better to acknowledge it before an attack than after. pete, thank you so much. >> absol

action is necessary to protect our people and president obama has shown he'll do that whether it's in pakistan, with the bin laden operation, in yemen, in somalia, we will take direct action against terrorists who threaten the united states. even as we develop long-term solutions that empower partners on the ground. with respect to legal matters, i wouldn't want to prejudge an action that we haven't taken. i would say that the actions we're taking in iraq are at the invitation of the iraqi government and consistent with the president's constitutional authority. the action that we took to try to rescue hostages in syria was entirely legal of course because we were seeking to save americans from eminent danger and that is at the core of justification for military action. i think that any additional actions that we take, we would want to consult with congress. >> things that you have drawn about iraq was that you were invited in is what you just mentioned. syria that wouldn't be the case. isn't there a distinction and wouldn't you have to -- >> i don't want to speak hypothetically about an action

he thought that al qaeda basically was a criminal gang hoyled up in the frontier areas of pakistan. you kill their leaders and that is the end. unfortunately that is not true. it is worldwide idealogical movement that has real staying power. he also couldn't admit to himself that his policy of passivity and retreat in syria and iraq had created predicate for this catastrophe. jon: so why this sudden turn around, ab? why is the defense secretary saying that this is an imminent threat to the united states? >> well, what you heard from our top two military officials yesterday who i don't think were being unis a borednant and sent out by the commander-in-chief to begin a campaign to convince the public was that isis is unlike anything we've ever seen. those are secretary hagel's words. more sophisticated, better funded, more easily able to attract and radicalize westerners. more threatening than anything we've ever seen. and so what they were doing was, preparing i think, the public for a change in strategy, even though they said that we wouldn't be attacking isis inside of syria. they
