that we see and it very much overlaps with comments danny has made is localization requirements in various forms. i think most specifically tied to internet. it's either in the form of local server requirements, requirements you have a server in the country to provide your service. and the down side of the that i think are extremely obvious. the cost is tremendous. it can in fact deter companies from even going to a specific market if they know they have to set up a new local server in that country. secondly, having to store data locally within a country is also a tremendous costly barrier. again, we understand some of the motivations which may be security, privacy. we believe there should be and can be ways around that. so that again the tremendous costs involved in setting up separate data storage centers can be avoided. i think those are two of perhaps the most practices we see. often tied to the comment danny made, companies see this as an opportunity to encourage the growth of their own internet industry. but we absolutely agree that in fact, that often turns out to be counter

story that i can think of is the danny shin story. i was producer before a reporter. this was when there was a trial happening when the chinese-american soldier from new york china town. he within months after he enlisted and being stationed in afghanistan he shot himself and committed suicide in afghanistan after being called lots of different racial slurs and being physically abused. it was a case that got a lot of asian-american activists very concerned about mistreatment based on race in the military. so this was a story that went on because so many were prosecuted. i pitched we should do an interview checking in on this case. it has been a few months since it happened. we should check in. i didn't get much of a response. and i was disappointed that i felt like this is a story that amongest the asian-american community this is a conversation. what does it mean when there are so few asian-americans serving the military. here we have a prominent example and what does that mean? so what i took away from that is when i became a reporter there was an opera recently premiered here in washi

leaves aside. the thing about domestic and international politics, so danny and al have a book where they argue that democracies are hesitant to enter war, and they only become involved in wars that they are likely to win. so they show this observation and you show this throughout history. but the mechanism for that is really important. they say it's casualty sensitivity. they say that leaders worried that the mass public is going to react poorly to casualties. but if the mechanism is, in fact, through elites, right, if elites are the ones making these decisions, they have the agency and flexibility to interpret the meaning of ambiguous wartime events. so think about the surge, right pap lot more troops go in. is this a good thing, a bad thing? there's a lot more potential there for elite -- i wouldn't say elite manipulation but elite manipulation of that potential reality. it's how the war gets filtered through domestic politics that matters most. right? so if individuals are the ones -- individual citizens are the ones doing the cost-benefit analysis, if individual citizens are the
