c's casey hunt has more. casey. >> reporter: richard, a very busy afternoon at the white house where we are learning more details about how this immigration and refugee executive order is going to affect the people who are outside of the united states, trying to travel here. we're also expecting a series of new executive orders, potentially this afternoon. so, i just want to walk you through some of the new information that we have now. first of all, we do know that both of the refugees who landed at jfk and were detained are going to be allowed into the country. when we got this briefing from senior administration officials one had been waived through released. and the other was working closely with border protection to try and resolve this. the realities is, this san issue because a lost of the governance governing this acceptance, people allowed in, that guidance is still being written. it's being worked on right now by dhs and the state department according to this senior administration official. and it's

nbc's casey hunt is covering every movement for us. in fact, i understand she was just in a briefing with a senior u.s. administration official to give us a sense of how this is playing out. i'm sure they're commenting as well on the developments today. what can you tell us as far as reaction inside the white house to the criticism pouring in? >> reporter: ayman, good afternoon. a lot to report out of a breefrg with a senior administration official here at the white house. related to fallout from this executive order that was signed yesterday and implemented very quickly. we do know, and i think we've seen pictures of one of two people detained at jfk airport, a refugee, now released under the waiver program, we're told, that's part of this executive order. that was something, a process that had to be started. and the second person that was detained, we're also told was in the process of going through that same waiver program. so, the details of this, though, are still being worked out as we speak. the agencies that are involved here a

casey hunt is inside that room, i believe. casey, it seemed as if this was a speech that went over very well? >> reporter: it did seem like there was a warm atmosphere in the room. we couldn't hear from our vantage point all of the back and forth. but it was clear that trump was at points interacting with the kong leadership who were seated to his right and left on the stage. there were a couple of moments of levity. he for example, turned around and asked where his cia director mike pompeo, now a former congressman, was. he was looking for him in the crowd. pompeo of course now has a new job day to day. he is no longer congressman. i will note, craig, that this speech largely steered clear of some of the things that have been the most difficult for members of congress in grappling with this new president over the course of the last couple of days. we didn't hear an extended discussion about voter fraud for example. although we did here of course a reminder that a lot of people said that donald trump could never have witness t

and live on capitol hill, casey hunt. she is where the hearing for the education nominee betsy devos will get underway a little bit later today. kristen let's start with you. trump is brushing off the negative polling. tell me what's going on within the transition. is there some concern about where he stands right now and his ability going forward to unite this country? >> reporter: that's right. donald trump is brushing off those polls, katie, saying they are yet another part of the rigged system. but when you talk to transition officials they stress a couple of points. one, that his inauguration will be focused on unity. that's going to be a big theme that we can expect. and internally, they try to kinds of shift the narrative away from some of what the president-elect has put forward publicly. for example, when it comes to this big rift with the intelligence community, you see president-elect donald trump doubling down. and of course outgoing cia director john glennen slamming him overnight hadn his exit interview with

casey, let's start with you. senator sessions was grilled on civil rights, women's rights, hate crimes, immigration, his ability to say no to donald trump. the muslim ban, torture, russian hacking, freedom of the press. what so far has been the major headline? and is there anything in there that could potentially, if not derail his confirmation, then pose a hurdle? >> at this point katie i think the short answer is we haven't heard anything that stands out as something that's really going to be a sticking, tripping block for jeff sessions on his road to confirmation. now, that said, before we go through a couple of those other issues one thing that we did see some late focus on was senator al franken's line of questioning. what franken did was essentially press jeff sessions on his history fighting for civil rights. so jeff sessions, the trump transition team have worked very hard to highlight areas of his resume when he served as alabama attorney general and in other roles fighting on behalf of civil rights. ess

. >> all right, casey hunt is standing by on capitol hill. so casey, democrats think they have something here it looks like it is big, the headline on this certainly sounds bad for tom price, price says look, there's context here that makes this not at all what it looks like. so the question is, how much of this is grand standing from the democrats versus how much do they have the goods on tom price? >> well steve, this is obviously a very complicated set of information that democrats wanted to make sure everyone was aware of before these hearings kicked off. in that way, they're running a political style campaign here against one of donald trump's nominees. but, there is some information that has come to light over the course of the last day that adds to this story. it started, there was a cnn report that was discussing that stock that you just heard elizabeth warren explaining, and this was a big medical device firm. and tom price is lawyers are actually out today with a letter calling for a retraction of that report and saying that it was

joining us how from capitol hill, casey hunt, she's been following all of this. you have a colorful metaphor there, casey, but take us from this standpoint, donald trump has said he wants to repeal obamacare and he wants, at the same time it's repealed, to have a new plan in place. is that on the horizon? could that actually happen here? >> reporter: it is possible, steve, to a certain extent anything is possible in that regard. but it is extremely unlikely if you are familiar with how things tend to work or not work, kind of grind along here on capitol hill. the challenge is not just getting republicans on the same page, if they want to replace this, they have to compromise with democrats in the senate. that is really the challenge. and that's why what happened today is so significant. this is going to allow them to take apart with only republican votes. and the next step and i talked to vice president elect pence about this earlier this week, and he said, echoing the president-elect, we're going to move two pieces of legislation along parallel tracks. one is th

casey, democrats really went after him today amount of lot of focus on taxes. a lot of focus on the cayman islands and a great deal of time spent on his tenure at one west bank. critic called it a foreclosure mill. what was his day like? >> hey craig, well you played that tense part of that back and forth that kind of underscores how tense the reasonable was and how angry some of these republicans and democrats are over mnuchin. he is possibly one of the most controversial of the trump nominees. and there's a pretty long list of them. but the focus really on his record, as you mentioned, one best financial. we've talked a lot of people today who say they were foreclosed on inappropriately. we talked to people who have reverse mortgages who say that his company tried to remove them from their homes. but then we're also learning today about his role in this group that was offshore in the cayman islands. this is something that according to a democrat memo from the committee came to light as the questionnaire that he had to fill out for this nomination hearing was

casey hunt has been covering that all day long. casey, we heard from president trump. he was supposed to have a closed-door session, right, with lawmakers that you're reporting where they could ask questions of the president and that didn't ppen? >> that's right, kate, it's a tradition here with the retreats when the commander in chief comes in to address his party, that they would take questions behind closed doors. so the remarks are typically public and the lawmakers get a chance to ask questions. that did not happen this time. president trump abruptly left after he made his remarks. sean spicer later telling the press pool that it was simply because they were running behind. they obviously were quite late in getting here to philadelphia but it did ruffle a few funnelingers among republicans here to didn't get a chance to ask him questions. overall, there was no additional damage done to donald trump's relationship with congressional republicans. it has been an uneasy one over the last couple of days, particularly on sharp issues like towarrture. what the president

let me go to casey hunt who has been watching up on capitol hill all day today. some of it has been about the senator's past. there were a lot of questions raised about what happened in 1986 when he was considered for a federal judgeship and denied by the senate. >> that's right kate. that's really been a central focus here. and that incident has really followed jeff sessions throughout his entire career. he was rejected for that federal judgeship in 1986 after a colleague of his said he was an -- an african-american colleague said sessions referred to him as boy and made other racially disparaging remarks. and it sank session's nomination and followed him ever since. he went home, became the alabama attorney general, was assistant u.s. attorney. attorney in the southern region. that's when we've been talking about today and the trump transition has tried to focus in on defending session's record on civil rights. and sessions himself addressed at some length at the beginning of this hearing. take a look. >> let me address another issue straight on. i was accused
