why is schumer wasting so much political capital on this? >> i think he feels he has to do that for his base. as you said, i think the republicans are on board and i think we'll get some democrats as well. i had a good meeting with judge kavanaugh, he's very, very impressive. david: you know, people, of course, the democrats saying far too conservative. justice antonin scalia was more conservative than he is. i knew a lot of his personal opinions on things and he was much more conservative, but look at this, back in '86, scalia won the vote by 98-0. my question is advise and consent. it clearly meant something different back then, what does advise and consent mean today? >> well, you know, that's a great point. this is clearly somebody who's qualified to serve on the supreme court, and that's why i believe he will be confirmed and it would be good if people looked at it in that context. he is an incredible body of work, he is qualified, and people should recognize that and support him, and that is, i guess, how it used to work, and again, ho

mike: is a dilemma for chuck schumer? if those democrats lose he gets further away from being majority leader, right? >> you would think so but senator schumer hasn't shown anyone that is really build bridges across party is trying to make common cause. he has led some democrats on occasion and rarely, what republican and since the statement at the same time, he really has not tried to work hard enough on the kavanaugh nomination. mike: estimate who work in the senate, softly with supreme court confirmations, how brutal do you expect this to get? do you expect some of these democrats thinking about running for president in 2020 may get a little feisty? >> i certainly think that there is opportunity for grandstanding. we so that in the neil gorsuch accommodation. we were likely to see that again. we have come from history or justice antonin scalia, and others were confirmed by huge journeys in both parties to now we are in a contentious situation it shouldn't have to be this way we have highly qualified nominees like neil

also senator chuck schumer has suggested the building named for richard russell, lifetime supporter of segregation from georgia, where mccain had his office throughout his long tenure in the senate be renamed in john mccain's honor. nbc's kelly o'donnell is in arizona where she's been all weekend. and kelly, you covered him longer than anyone, and i know you've got a lot of thoughts. talk to us first about what we expect in arizona in the next couple of days. >> well, andrea, we are here at the state capitol where john mccain will be honored by the people for whom he represented and served for three decades. the governor has made arrangements for the capitol to open its doors on wednesday. the people of arizona can file past the casket and pay their respects. the governor, i had a chance to speak with him. people in arizona, we're used to seeing john mccain at a diamondsback game or even at the starbucks. this will be their chance in a solemn way to say thank you for his service and to acknowledge him and to comfort the extended mccain family which, of course, is home here in arizona.
