my father, antonio de la guardia, was head of a government department created by fidel castro, tasked with breaking the us blockade on cuba. his job was to smuggle in high—tech equipment from the us. my father was accused of being in contact with drug traffickers. it was said that was the only reason he was executed. but for me, it was all about politics. fidel castro wanted to do away with a group of officers who had different opinions to those of the regime. from about 1985, we began to feel the influence in cuba of the reforms in the soviet union — perestroika. these were issues that were being openly talked about here. my friends and i used to sit in the garden with my father and talk about how if things were changing in eastern europe, then cuba should change too. i didn't imagine that expressing those opinions could mean being arrested and then executed. the trial was filmed every day. it lasted a week and was broadcast each night on tv. it was totally controlled — the accused could only say yes or no. the last time i visited him injail was just days before his execution.

that is probably what castro is getting at here. i think the argument for choice proponents is it would allow the segregation and allow students to escape failing schools. that is not seem to be happening. it seems to more or less stay the same when you introduce school choice policies. it needs to be tackled in the larger sense of housing policy and in other areas that end up promoting segregation, but we need to be thinking more broadly about other ways in which we can increase equities, so segregation is one contributor to the equity problem. going back to the cover station about finding and making sure low income families have opportunities. there are other ways to tackle that, and education is part of the solution. housingeah, i think the issue is a really big one, because people still primarily choose a school by where they buy a house. to seeery hard, though, that there is a federal solution where you can stop people from buying houses if they have means, or even to require that you build low income housing to balance that. i

my kids are for elizabeth and castro for vp. that will probably change, but it's definitely generational. it is true that older votes vote more often. but barack obama was elected by younger voters. the only election in my lifetime in 2008 where more people under 35 voted over 65. there are no rules that can't be broken in the democratic primary. it's going to be a fascinating confrontation here. i don't think it will be that much of a confrontation. i think they'll both be polite to each other. because they know that antagonizing democratic voters is not something either one of them wants to do. it is a great contest and it really is -- again, i don't want to exaggerate this. it's a little bit for the soul of the democratic party. but the democratic party is changing. and the question is do we have a candidate everybody knows and probably can beat donald trump? or do we sort of advance the ideological ball down the field and have somebody who's more exciting and more with ideas that appeal to particularly young people and women
