delighted to be here in chinatown. thank you to all of you who came out. there's going to be some noise during this event. this is a very busy street. that's one of the reasons we are doing this project. we are here today -- i am transportation director with the sfmta. thank you, boss. we're geared today to mark yet another important milestone and the steady, continued progress that we are making for the future generations of san francisco in this critically important project criticallyphase 2 of the light rail, otherwise known as the central subway. it is a project that is very important for building capacity, to move san francisco in the future. it also has benefits for current generations of san franciscans. the benefit comes in the form of jobs. you cannot mention the word jobs these days without thinking of our great mayor lee. out further ado, i want to ask mayor lee to come up and say a few words. mayor lee: thank you. thank you for your great leadership. we would be dryer if the subway was built. we would be right here. i'm looking forward to it for the work that is about to hap

regard to the project, for the chinatown station, i think we had mentioned before that it would be going to the board of supervisors committee after it came from the planning commission. it did go to the committee last monday and went to the full board on tuesday and passed unanimously, so it will have its second reading, and we expect that to be done. we have issued the first of three notices to proceed to the tunnel contractor that allows him to purchase the boring machine any day now. a second notice to proceed, which will allow for construction of the launch box for the tunnel. in terms of chinatown, we have now taken possession of the stockton street building, which is on the site of the station. we have moved successfully everybody out, and we have now hired someone to basically clean up the inside of the building to seal the outside of the building to make sure that in the interim, until it is removed, that is not only does not become a polite to the neighborhood but that is attractive -- does not become a polite -- blight to the neighborhood but that it is attractive. that

richard chen, a longtime leader in a businessman in the chinatown committee that passed away on february 5. i want to take a minute to acknowledge and thank his family members who are here in the chamber today. he was born in a humble village in canton province in china. he proved over the course of his career to be a man a significant talent. after burying his wife in 1929, he began a remarkable military career with the chinese national party as a lieutenant colonel, later with the united states army, where he supported the famous flying tigers air force. soon after that, richard retired from his well decorated military service. he moved to san francisco with his wife and children. despite a modest start in the food industry, his hard work and dedication allowed him to build several successful grocery and restaurant businesses in chinatown. richard was highly respected in the community as an entrepreneur and business leader. in his story epitomizes the american dream. i want to thank him for his love for his wife, his children, his family, his compassion, and dedication to the

worked on a series of community plans for neighborhoods from visitation valley to chinatown. we always begin with the same starting point -- start with the people who live and work in the community. we have worked with various diverse communities, which means doing processes in multiple languages, getting communities to listen to each other, and understand development projects, their impact, their benefits, and the trade offs. in this project, we began by looking at the waterfront from the existing pattern interspersed with buildings that build up to the topography of san francisco. the vision created by the community that looks at all of the publicly-managed locks and crosstown connections. we believe that this is where the port should have begun with this process. i will talk about five major points of the vision that was created. what you have before you is a summary map of what the community came up with. these five points stand in stark contrast to the point that is before you. first, it begins with a comprehensive development plan for the entire waterfront, not a plan driven by a

financial district on the edge of chinatown. everything they rely on for existence is the golden gate. it's of massive importance to the people what comes in and out of san francisco bay. they can't see it where they are. they get the idea to build a giant wooden structure. the years that it was up here, it gave the name telegraph hill. it survived although the structure is long gone. come to the 1870's and the city has growed up remarkably. it's fueled with money from the nevada silver mines and the gold rush. it's trying to be the paris of the west. now the beach is the suburbs, the we will their people lived on the bottom and the poorest people lived on the top because it was very hard getting to the top of telegraph hill. it was mostly lean-to sharks and bits of pieces of houses up here in the beginning. and a group of 20 businessmen decided that it would be better if the top of the hill remained for the public. so they put their money down and they bought four lots at the top of the hill and they gave them to the city. lily hitchcock coit died without leaving a specific use for h

pageant just happened this yesterday -- this weekend for miss chinatown usa. they have been a wonderful several weeks of celebration as we enter the year of the dragon. as i said many times, the year of the dragon is phenomenal, because it is a time where we are confronting our challenges. we are taking on more risks. we are embracing innovation. and that is exactly what i want to do, in concert with our board of supervisors, to help lead the city and make sure we are boldly going forward in our recovery of our economic challenges, but also, most importantly, to provide opportunities for everyone in this city, regardless of your background, to fully participate in everything that is meaningful in the city, whether it is raising a family, joining in a business, or getting a job. there is such a wonderful opportunity for everyone to work together. this is meaningful for me. i personally am celebrating this with anita. we cleaned up the house a couple of weeks ago. we are still cleaning it out to get rid of stuff from old years. because of the opportunities i see for this city, w
