it hasn't really helped romney as much as one might expect. well, last night on the "rachel maddow show" campaign strategist told rachel santorum's campaign is trying to maximize their campaign spending concentrating on different priorities. >> first of all, i think if mitt romney was here what you would be asking him is how the heck are you spending all of this money and not able to win. this is a great american story that says the guy that can write the biggest check and is struggling. in kansas he got more votes than anyone combined. second, the measurement you're looking at is simply advertising dollars. in many cases we're choosing to invest in being on the ground, phone calls, grassroots, rather than in advertising because if you go on chicago tv, quite frankly, which is the third most expensive media market in the country, you're wasting about 98 cents of every dollar because it's going to people who aren't going to be voting in a republican primary. we also think strategically we're smarter than the romney people. they've spent over $40 million on negative ads and they're still

, thanks so much. and regarding the supreme court health care arguments, last night on "the rachel maddow show," the senior editor of "slate" magazine spoke with rachel on what's weighing on the minds of the justices as they hear those arguments. take a listen. >> it appeared that, certainly, four of the conservative justices had kind of made up their minds and that justice kennedy, who's that central vote that everybody's watching, was awfully edgy about the individual mandate. so, i think it didn't look good. i will say two things in response to that. watching the second hour, it wasn't nearly as clear that justice kennedy was only uncomfortable with the government side in this case. he asked some pretty pointed question at the end of the hour, this second hour, of the challengers, and certainly gave some intimation that he understood that the health care market is a little different from the broccoli market. what the justices are thinking, or certainly justices like, i think, anthony kennedy and chief justice john roberts, are thinking is how does this impact the court to hand down another

in november? last night on the "rachel maddow show," dan rather spoke with him about romney's chances in the fall election and presidential politics in general. >> american presidential elections are generally about where the country is going. what's ahead for the country, not what's behind us. that's what our elections are generally about. and i'd be very surprised if this doesn't follow that pattern. therefore, the candidate who can get the optimistic ground, who says, listen. i'm here to tell you that i'm the best person to carry us into the future. it's the candidate who is going to win. this should be a republican year. one question is whether the republicans this year will snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. that obama is vulnerable, but they've hurt themselves time and again on women's issues, other things during the primary campaign. but by the time we get past labor day and start getting into the last two weeks of the campaign, what we've been seeing this spring, we're seeing so far back in the past that you and i will be smiling about it. but romney has to pivot
