at that point helena was the only union base of any size in arkansas. and be it was surrounded by contraband camps, you know, thousands and thousands of african-american slaves fled their plantations and went to the, went to the army in hopes of freedom. well, when thomas came down, his task was to take some of these men and make them into soldiers. so he held a, he held a meeting, it was like a tent revival meeting, you know, he's up there and, you know, governor, the congressmen are all speechifying and all like that. and the next morning the entire first arkansas infantry of african descent was recruited. soldiers, white soldiers were selected as officers, and a lot of men took advantage of that in that they could go from being a private to a captain with the stroke of a pen. and this provided a lot of much-needed manpower in arkansas as well as, you know, for the entire union army. but in this state a total of 5,526 black men were recruited into the units that were raised in this state. with the fall of vicksburg, that freed up a lot of soldiers to,

well, on july 12th the army of the southwest finally marched into helena. this brought to a close one of the most remarkable operations of the civil war. during the first six months of '62, the federals marched 700 miles from raleigh to helena, across some of the most difficult terrain in the country, and fought and won a major battle against imposing odds. no other union operation at this stage of the war lasted as long, covered as much territory, or achieved its objectives as effectively. the army of the southwest secured missouri, freed union resources for use elsewhere, and dealt confederate arkansas and slavery a heavy blow. few other civil war operations anywhere had such an impact on the course of events. it truly was a campaign worth commemorating, worth remembering, and i'm so glad that so many of you have come out tonight while we've had this little discussion. thank you so much. >> thank you very much for coming, you are dismissed. >>> as commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the civil war continues, join us every saturday at 6:00 and 10:00 p

helena in light precipitation but heavier downpours right there. anyway it looks like a wild horse valley road, that heavy downpour moving out of that particular region. this is a weather camera looking out at the coast where today's high temperature only near 53 degrees. other was the wind has been gusting up to 37 m.p.h.. tempters now holding pretty steady in the '50s. it looks like most of the rain is out of here. but blake, we certainly did needed. i'm very impressed. check out oakland, 76 percent of normal now compared to last year at 103% and we jump up to 9% in the city of san francisco as well. as we take a look at the evening commute, these cars are heading and tourist town. the showers are tapering off with breezy winced continuing out of the northwest between 10 and 20 m.p.h.. tried those days this weekend and look at the match out of rain on wednesday. tonight overnight with partly cloudy skies, '30's and 40's with tomorrow's daytime highs starting off with clouds, ending up with an abundance of sunshine, highs in the fifties to mid 60'
