amy hollyfield begins our live team coverage with the latest briefing at sfo. amy? >> reporter: we have learned much more about the moments after the crash. fire chief tells us it was a difficult scene at first. the two bodies were found outside the plane. she says on board there were people that needed rescuing. there were passengers in the water at the water's edge. she says she doesn't think they were ejected but they were dousing themselves from the fire. fire chief told us that the tail of the plane was separated by several hundred feet. there were copious amounts of smoke and confusion and chaos. she and mayor expressed gratitude and some shock there were so many survivors. >> i would like to say at this time, with the help of so many people. we have accounted all 307 passengers and crew. having said that, we have two fatalities that are confirmed and quite a number of passengers that are still in critical condition. >> there was a lot collapsed seats. a lot was on fire. quite a bit of damage to that plane. again, it's amazing. >> reporter: of course, so many

abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield has that part of the story. amy? >> yes, there are about 20 first responders here from the fire department and the police department talking about what they saw, what they did, moments after the crash. let's start with when they first got the call. >> the communications from the tower was "alert 3, alert 3, plane crash, plane crash." the female that dispatched us and i knew from her voice that the event we were going to was real. >> you know the inflatable chutes the passengers use to get off the planes in two firefighters said today they ran up the flights to get on to the plane. they found people trapped in the back and extricated some out of the hole in the back where the tail broke apart from the plane doing all of this in heavy smoke and, also, with the fear that jut fuel was spilling out of the plane they feel very lucky they got everyone off. >> this is small something that i expected ever to view in my career. as i approached the airplane and as my initial report was to the communication center, i have a larg

we have coverage with amy hollyfield speaks to the ntsb spokesman but now over to burlingame and matt. ought families of the victims arrived last night. they are inside the crown plaza hotel in burlingame. because of that, security is tight. this area has been declared a federal zone. hotel employees brought out huge umbrellas to shield the families from the media when they arrived last night. parents did not speak with reporters and were taken by bus from the tarmac at sfo. we hear new accounts about what it was like inside the airline flight when it crashed. 15-year-old described how she got out of the plane. >> everything stopped. i realized i was alib. i, looked over and i saw my brother and sister. they were fine. my mom and my dad were both on the floor because their seats fell down. i called their names out and they both moaned. >> her family was injured but not seriously and they were taken to san francisco john -- general hospital. the two fatal victims were 16-year-old ye mengyuan and wang linjia and the family members will heat with the asiana c.e.o. and president would met

abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield has that story from burlingame. >> look at this amazing video captured overnight by our photographer, huge amounts of smoke coming out of the runway and another fire on the runway within a week. firefighters rushed to the scene and it happened as crews were lifting parts of the wreckage. they got the fire out quickly. the airport duty manager has not called us to tell us what happened and has referred to us a spokesman. we are waiting for details. here is what we saw moments of budget fire, the fuselage was lifted and they put a sling around it and debris came billowing out. they expected this to be a significant salvage operation. before they got started they talked how they had no idea what would happen. >> we expect there will be a lot of hazardous materials, jet fuel, hydraulic fluid that needs to be cleaned in that area. >> officials say they hope to have this all cleared and the runway repaired and re-opened by sunday. they are working around the clock because they realize that the impact the closure is having on the airport, 10 percent of flights

abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield is in millbrae with the timeline and the investigation. amy? >> we saw a lot of activity overnight, look at the video. we saw them using cranes to move the big pieces off the runway, the engine and the tail. they say they will clear the little pieces by hand and this is just the debris on the runway. they will move the plane in a few more days. the ntsb has also announced they are investigating the evacuation after the crash saying that the first time the flight attendants asked the pilot, should we evacuate, they said no. then the glide attendants saw the fire and asked for a second time and the answer was yes, so people started exiting the plane a minute and a half after the crash. the pilots are in the front of the plane and do not have a good sense of what is going on behind them. though need that information from the flight attendants. we will be looking into that issue. hindsight is 20/20. >> here are the latest headlines from the investigation. the pilot told the ntsb he saw a flash of light blinding him just before the crash and they do

abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield talked to the head of the ntsb in burlingame. what was the latest? >> she was very forthcoming. we asked her a last questions. one on the mind of travelers is when is the runway going to open. she said it will be days but hoping not more than a week before they get all of the wreckage cleared east runway and opened again. today they hope to finish documenting all of the debris on runway and along the seawall and then they plan to move on to investigating the plan. they plan to interview airport personnel and the cabin crew and the pilots, all the people involved that morning. i asked her if pilot error is found to be the cause of the crash, what kind of authority does the ntsb have, what kind of action can the agency take? >> we are trying to figure out what happened and why it happened so we can learn less sos and apply. we make recommendations but people do not have to implement the recommendations. it is kind of helpful to get information out and 80 percent of our recommendations are adopted or accepted in a favorable way. >>

. >> we have coverage of the crash at sfo with, first, our reporter amy hollyfield in burlingame. what is ntsb saying this morning? >> we have a good view of the wreckage and the investigators working. what they are doing out there -- they have a big box out there. i asked about that. they said it is a trailer full of equipment. that is how they got the equipment out there. they are using g.p.s. on the runway to help locate all of the debris. the ntsb posted this picture of the chairman and investigator in charge, bill english, on the runway, discussing the progress. we asked her when they would move the wreckage and re-open the runway. >> we are certainly talking days, hopefully not talking weeks. we need to allow our folks to do the work and the salvage operation will be significant. >> today they plan to finish documenting the debris on the runway and along the seawall. then they will move to the plane. they will finish their conversations with the pilot and interview airport personnel with respect to the emergency response. we hope to talk to the cab ben crew about evacuation

amy hollyfield is at the dublin/pleasanton station. amy? >> bart has tweeted their plan a little bit. this map shows they have added a location of where to pick up a round-trip free bus ride into san francisco. you can now go to the west oakland bart station which is located on 7th street between 5:00 this morning and 9:00 this morning to grab a ride. the four locations from yesterday are still good today and that is el cerrito, crack correct, fremont, and dublin with a bus there between 5:00 and 8:00. the round trip ride is free and it went smooth yesterday. we covered this in walnut creek. there were plenty of seats there. bart officials are still asking to please work from home today if you can. they pointed out the buses cannot completely replace the trains or carry the same load. if you need to get to the city, this is an option if you need it but if you can, stay home. today you now have a new location as an option at the west oakland bart station. >> in oakland, buses were delayed by those claiming to be occupy protesters blocking th

abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield has what we need to know. amy? >> the goal is no fatality for a week on interstate 80 between california and new york. here are the statistics that motivated the asked. officials say that 30 percent of fatalities on interstate 80 are because people do not have on their seatbelts and 27 percent of deaths are alcohol-related and 2 percent are because of speed and 4 percent are distracted. officers in iowa had the idea to do this crackdown. the good news in california is officials say we are actually pretty good about wearing our seatbelts. >> california has among the highest in seatbelt compliance and for that reason we have made great progress if reducing to facilities. particularly those related to seatbelts. >> this is called the i-80 challenge. officers will add extra patrol to all 2,900 miles of interstate 80 and look if people who are speeding, who are not wearing their seatbelts and the basic violation that could lead to death. so, look out, the challenge starts today. >> 5:32. developing news from the east ba

. >> abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield joins us outside the talks. >> today is a big day in the negotiations. they are going to tackle the tough subject of wages. we asked a union spokesman her thoughts as she headed into negotiations. >> can you tell us what you expect snowed. >> very important, we expect on get some work done. reach an agreement. >> can you give us a sense of some of the riders? >> we are doing this for the riders. you at the to sides are fall apart on wages, and offering 8 percent raise for four years and the union is asking for a 23 percent raise over three years and the contract that is in place is set to expire on monday, and bart spokesman said they are hopeful it will be resolved by then but today they are going to start planning for a possible strike. we are working with a huge regional conference call today and trying to get more happens on buses for the stations and we will add an extra location for pickup and we want more direct service to the city with the bus services. last time we had some buses go straight to san francisco. we learned from the last time ought

abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield is where the announcement just came down. >> they just announced the city is going to offer free wi-fi at 31 of the parks. this is because of a very generous donation or gift from google. the company giving the city $600,000 to make this possible. city officials point out that san francisco is very behind on this front saying that cities like new york and paris already have wi-fi in their parks. they say this will make it easier for people to spend more time in san francisco's parks and enjoy them. >> it will further up our parks and city to innovation, education, and inclusiveness for all residents but also as i mentioned it is a significant step toward bridging our digital divide in our city. it provides local community groups and residents access to the internet they may not have had before. >> he points out that some park offices use dialup connection so when you register your family with the department, for instance, you will appreciate the new efficiency. installation begins in december and they expect it to be complete by the spring. >> breaking

abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield has the latest from millbrae. amy? >> the crews were busy over overnight. we saw them taking away key pieces of the wreckage including the engine and the tail. this is the first time we have seen them. doing clean up and the ntsb is hoping it will be able to give the runway back totoday but said it would be a significant salvage operation. this was the focus overnight, yesterday there was a lot of attention placed on the evacuation after the crash. the first time the flight attendants asked, should we evacuate, the answer was "no." the second time they asked, the pilot said yes when they saw fire. they did not evacuate for a minute and a half after the crash. >> pilots do not have a good sense of what is going on behind them. they need to get that information from the flight attendants. we will certainly be locking into the issue. >> the ntsb says they hope to return the runway to sfo today. i asked the sfo spokesman how long after that happens will it take to get the runway open? he said it depends on the damage done

amy hollyfield is at the dublin/pleasanton bart station with the latest on this option. >> bart has taken what it learned from yesterday and made changes. this is still a point to pick up a bus in dublin/pleasanton but they have added another location. we have a map so you can see the four locations from yesterday still standing. you can grab a free round trip bus ride into san francisco from the dublin bart station and walnut creek and fremont but now you can also pick up the bus at the west oakland station located on 7th street in oakland. the hours are different. you can pick up there between 5:00 and 9:00 and the other locations are from 5:00 to 8:00 and now they will have 36 buses going into the city. yesterday they had 18. pickup was smooth. we were in walnut creek where buses were waiting for passengers, many sitting empty to be boarded. there were jammed roads and the commute looked tough but the pickup was the easy part of the day. this morning in dublin/pleasanton we do not see anyone here early waiting for the 5:00 a.m. bus. yesterday in walnut creek there was a handful of peop

abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield is outside the bonfare market. what happened next, amy? >> they believe that both men who tried to problem this store were armed. one of them is on the run. this happen at 10:30 last night here in alameda on high street at santa clara. the bonfare market is where it occurred and the robbers did not realize that one shopper was a sheriff deputy. >> there was an off-duty alameda county sheriff deputy inside at the time and we are not sure exactly what happened but the deputy ended up shooting and killing a suspect who was armed and possibly shot the second suspect. >> they are now checking local hospitals to see if that second suspect will show up looking for medical treatment. they are asking for anyone with information or if you see something suspicious, an injured man on the run, give them a call. do not confront him. he could be armed. this is the second time this store has been problemmed in a week. eight days ago, at the same time, the same, it sounds very similar to what happened last night, and last night's ending was quite different

amy hollyfield? >> i got briefed bay spokesman who says the runway could open in a couple of days. i asked him to repeat that and he said, yes, it is possible it could be opened in a couple of days. the effort started overnight. look at this video clearing the runway. you can see they moved big pieces out of the way. they are almost finishing clearing it but they need 500 tons of asphalt to re-pave it. they cannot clean out wreckage until the ntsb released to them and they do not know what damage they will find. >> when we lift up the aircraft and move it out of the way, that is left to be done under the aircraft? we expect there will be a lot of hazardous material, jet fuel, hydraulic fuel to be cleaned up in the area. we also expect well have to re-pave the section of asphalt on the runway that was damaged by the accident. we also the work with the f.a.a. to reinstall the precision approach path indicator that was damaged in the incident. >> they are hoping ntsb will town the records over to them today and they will practice moving it. they don't know if it will buckle when they

abc7 news amy hollyfield is on tucker near delta. amy? >> firefighters say they found a marijuana grow inside this home. they think the fire was started because of an electrical problem. this home looked like it was dedicated to a grow operation with five rooms with growing equipment and the residents had bypassed the meter for electricity. firefighters do believe that is the cause of the fire. no one was home at the time. they got the call after midnight to come to tucker avenue in visitation valley in san francisco. three rooms were on fire. when they tried to go inside they realized something was suspicious. athey encounters with entry and noticed it was highly secure unusual for this time of residence. it became apparent this was a marijuana grow operation. >> firefighters say this wasn't a huge grow and they took some plants into custody from the house but not a lot. no arrests were made. the fire is out. there is just a big mess. now the big mystery is, who did this belong do? >> now a look at the weather forecast. it is similar to
