trump and clinton are off the trail today. for a look at those new nbc/wall street journal poll numbers, i'm joined by carrie dan, as we dissect the numbers here. for me what stood out, three words, marge inl of error. what is the biggest takeaway? >> this is a neck in neck race between hillary clinton and donald trump. that is a change from our last poll. last month hillary clinton had a double digit advantage over donald trump, that is no longer the case. trump earlier this month consolidating becoming the presumptive nominee of the republican party and we're seeing signs that republicans are in fact uniting behind donald trump and giving him a big boost there which makes this a neck and neck race within the margin of error. with bern mee sanders and donald trump, sanders has been making this argument saying that he polls better against donald trump than hillary clinton does and this poll is no exception. he's up 15 points on donald trump but hillary clinton we're expecting in that last round of primaries in california is go

how will clinton handle it? people around bill clinton are worried. i would say terrified they -- he will not handle this well. and trump will be a master of psy ops. willie: trump made the point you just made in the new york times story, which is that you cannot just go out and throw slime at hillary clinton about bill clinton. there has to be a strategy and a has to reflect on her. it will be up to him to twist that. the most remarkable thing about that story is that donald trump came out and announced five months ahead of the first debate the strategy, which is to throw all this stuff at her. mark: part of it is recklessness or carelessness or trump being trump. but it is also a calling card of i ops. he knows how to deal with these things. i talked with him, most other publicans, and he gets it. he gets them way the media cycle works, what he can do on twitter. he has said accurately, he has just begun. like the heelys story suggests, so he has held off and do later, he is going for it now. this story about him with clinton to say a word about it,

of hillary clinton. the fox poll released tonight shows donald trump at 45% and hillary clinton at 42% with a three-point margin of error. that poll is a statistical tie. it's a reversal of fortune for hillary clinton from the last fox news poll which showed her at 48% and donald trump at 41%. in tonight's fox news poll, donald trump still trails bernie sanders as he always has with bernie sanders at 46% and donald trump at 404-2%. if the fox news poll results are duplicated by other reputable polls, the clinton campaign will be in full on crisis mode because hillary clinton as a and can dpat has never been able to reverse a polling trend. hillary clinton polled at 56% with her opponent polling at 23%. on election day, hillary clinton won with 55% of the vote and rick lazio had gained 20 points to 43% of the vote. in other words, over a year of campaigning and $30 million spent it did not change the minds of more new york voters in favor of hillary clinton. she held on to her large lead as her opponent n

senator clinton has basically declared herself the nominee. the math is certainly very much in her favor. explain to me how you're the nominee in july in your head. >> fair question. and i think we take three -- there are three paths to victory. number one, i want to go into the convention with more pledge delegates than secretary clinton. and that's going to be an uphill fight. because we're 270 or so delegates. and then we've got 46% of the pledged delegates. what i want to do, and i think we can, is win california here, and win in a big vote. do very, very well in the other five states. and i believe going into the convention, if we can do this, with a majority of pledge delegates is a very symbolic victory. second of all, we're going to talk to those superdelegates in states where we have won landslide victories. 60%, 70%, 80% of the vote to say do what the people in your state want. they voted for bernie sanders. you as a superdelegate should follow their wishes. third point and most important point. as you know, chuck, there are over 400

i think the numbers were different for clintons and sanders, suggesting a bigger problem for clinton than we see right now in the final numbers. is that right? >> i think your thinking of looking at overall, how the overall west virginia lrkt tonight would vote. that is true. what we've decided to look at is sort of their own supporters tonight and what would happen to them. >> i was referring to own supporters, maybe i looked at the wrong numbers. dan, let's talk about this. this is obviously, potentially a big concern. west virginia generally falls into the republican column come november. but if this is a harbinger of other concerns to come, which is the defection of sanders supporters to trump. because in some of the open primaries, we've seen some voters torn between trump and sanders. obviously, they disagree on a lot of things. but they agree on trade, agree on at least in terms of rhetoric, money and politics. and they are both not the pick of party insiders in their respective parties. >> that's right. they have a lot of the same problems identified, which are big problems.
