, pershing brings in major general robert alexander. robert alexander is an anomaly. here is a guy who went to law school. and he chucked law school right at the end, he joined the army as a private in the 1880s. and he worked his way up every rank to major general. and he did so with a gigantic chip on his shoulder. a huge chip on his shoulder. and he had something to prove, and purging newt, if he took somebody like that and put them in charge of the 77th there was no way the 77th was going to fall apart. robert alexander came to france with the 41st division which was a depot division, they put them in place to replace divisions. he was phenomenal. when i took them out of that place and they put him as a brigadier general in the 32nd division, they hated him there. because his style of command was just like pershing's. you do it my way, or you are out of here. there was no waffling whatsoever. but pershing knew that this was the kind of tough guy that he needed. and under his command, the 77th will rack up more kilometers of a fence against the enemy that any division in france.
