men. it's summertime, hot. the british army is horrified by what exactly has happened here. what's striking and we'll pick this up a little later today, british army is innered for the next nine months. they don't try anything after this. they have just been pummeled by bunker hill. american loss alt bunkers hill 115 dead and 305 wounded. okay. a second result of bunker hill is even though the americans have lost this hill, the americans are greatly encouraged by this. it shows americans will fight. americans will fight like crazy. as the british ultimately sees the hill and enters this american earth where american soldiers fight them with rocks, butts of gunsz, they don't have bayonets. they comment they stand up like this. normal soldiers will run. these angry americans don't do that. another legacy of bunker hill is tremendously heavy officer casualties. very hard to put precise numbers on anything, any war, especially the american revolution. it's estimated somewhere in the neighborhood of 12, 13% of all british officers killed in american revolutionary war are killed at bunke

late 1862, we know this story of enlistment. and, after the emancipation proclamation, the u.s. army officially creates the usct, and those men are put in uniform as regular soldiers, according to the lincoln administration, and they are confronted by confederates who are reluctant to regard them as legitimate combatants. they say they cannot legitimately fight a war. so we don't have to accord them the status of public enemy. jefferson davis' first instincts is to encourage his armies to treat black soldiers captured as slaves in the act of insurrection, and to be turned over to state authorities and punished under slave rebellion. we heard patrick breen's discussion of what happens to those people in his discussion of the nat turner rebellion. the laws in every southern state are death for slave insurrection, so davis knows he's sending these men to their death. the confederate congress endorses a variety of measures on this front, and the confederacy begins this process although they're almost confronted immediately by the fact that many of the men fighting in union blue are free
