kpix 5's christian hartnett is in downtown san jose with an update. what can you tell us? >> reporter: you can still barely smell the gas. it's pretty much gone away. you can't see anything right now. when we showed up you saw gas spewing in the area and what looked like smoke. you couldn't tell what it was but there was something in the air right around that spot where they have roped off. now the site of the smoke or gas whatever we were seeing is gone. the smell is just barely there. it's lingering but still right now, crews, fire crews, san jose fire, pg&e, they're still on site over there, um, evaluating the situation trying to get it fixed. it appears as at this point as if the leak has stopped but we don't have official word of that just yet. right now you still see workers, employees in nearby buildings around here kind of right on the outskirts of the caution tape just looking and waiting and hearing word to see when they can finally go back into their buildings. they haven't heard anything just yet. a lot of people saying we were told to get out and evacuate and

kpix 5 julie watts is live there right now. julie? >> reporter: yeah guys, what a story, and now imagine this, you show up to work, going about your day, doing your thing. and then an hour into your shift, someone says check your ticket and you realize you are holding a $1.9 million lottery ticket. that's what happened to a young man here at the safeway today. as you might imagine, he did go home early. >> we escorted him out away from all of you. kpix 5's maria medina tells us that even the best case scenario seems unthinkable. >> reporter: as of today, santa clara county's covid-19 death toll stands at 19. so the big question tonight is how san jose city officials came to their estimation that 2,000 would die of the virus in this county alone by june. we asked for an interview, instead we were e-mailed a statement. >> there are a large number of us walking around who are infected. >> reporter: in a grim prediction released at this week's san jose city council meeting, the deputy city manager revealed a graphic with 3 scenarios. a death toll of 16,000 in santa clara alone if the community did nothing to stop the virus. nearly 8,000 deaths with low compliance. and the last and final prediction that they called the best scenario. if 70 percent of the public obeyed all orders. >> you can see even in that best case scenario, we were looking at 2,000 potential deaths directly from covid-19. >> reporter: that projection is higher than the current nationwide total. we asked the deputy city manager for an interview to explain the numb
