secretary of homeland security janet napolitano and my counter-terrorism homeland security adviser john brennan. i ask them to continue monitoring the situation, to keep the american people and members of congress informed. here's what we know. on christmas day, northwest airlines flight 253 was in route from amsterdam, netherlands to detroit. the airplane in the final approach to detroit metropolitan airport and a passenger allegedly tried to ignite an explosive device on his body, setting off a fire. thanks to the quick and heroic actions of passengers and crew, the suspect was immediately subdued, the fire was put out, and the airplane landed safely. the suspect is now in custody and has been charged with attempting to destroy an aircraft. a full investigation has been launched into this attended act of terrorism, and we will not rest until we find all who were involved and told them to account. this was a serious reminder of the dangers we face and the nature of those who threaten our homeland. this is but succeeded in bringing down -- had the suspect succeeded in bringing down the airplane

host: brennan on the democrats' line from north carolina. caller: if all of these immigrants are so great and ingenious, why don't they stay home and make their own country better? i have an idea that they come into this country and probably get all of this government advice and government aid to start these business that americans either do not know about or cannot get themselves. i'm not saying that they are bad people just because they come here, but gosh, if they are so ingenious, why can't they secured a way to -- and some of them might have to fight and some of them might have to die, but dan, they can make their own country better. guest: they do make their country's better. they send a lot of money home, which is enormous benefit to the country's back home. one of the things that is happening is that a number of the immigrants are particularly from asia, because there's so much trade between america and asia today. they're working in both countries. there is an indian family -- this fellow came to america originally as a ph.d. studen

adam barr and christine brennan joining us. the good news is that tiger woods is okay, he was released from the hospital. are we learning any more about where exactly he was headed at 2:25 this morning? >> the short answer is no, erica. only tiger knows for sure where he was going. one thing we do know that he was in asia and australia recently and the possibility of jet lag is there, he may have been up simply because he couldn't get to sleep. nobody knows for sure. i also know he's a workout fiend and if the wife and kids were in bed he might have been getting in a workout and going for a bite to eat at a 24-hour restaurant but again only tiger knows why he was going out at that hour. >> we have learned that his wife apparently was up, though, she heard the crash inside the house, came outside, used a golf club, somewhat ironically to help get him out of the vehicle, break a window. do we know what was happening, had she been up or heard the crash and woke her up? >> erica, we don't know and i think that's the one thing that'

we want to go now to christine brennan. she is with "usa today." she joins us now by telephone to talk about this. christine, many people have said, have been wondering if this is the first of many more to come when it comes to tiger woods and advertisers. what do you think? you have covered him for what, 12 or 13 years now? >> that's correct, don. i have. it certainly would look like this might be the beginning of a trend, which of course is not a good trend for tiger but it's understandable considering the news of the last 16 or so days. but yeah, i think that accenture is one of those crossover companies that are not sports-related, and i think if you look at at&t, his golf bag has at&t on it, you think of some of these other companies that are more mainstream, i think we may see -- gillette, of course, said it's taking a time out if tiger's take a time out. we may see more of this. >> here's the interesting thing. how do you get at -- if you're been covering him for a long time now, how are you getting at it in the sports world in this story wh

this is a concern. >> reporter: in recent months both general petraeus and john brennan, president obama's top counterterrorism adviser, personally warned yemeni president asaleh, that al qaeda was targeting his inner circle. a senior administration official confirms to cnn that intelligence agencies and military special praks teoperat teams are helping yemen provide intelligence, training and weapons. u.s. officials say they gave yemen intelligence on al qaeda targets but won't say if american warplanes or armed drones conducted the recent strikes. senator joe lieberman offered one of the few public hints. >> we have a growing presence there, and we have to, of special operations, green beret intelligence. if we don't act preemptively, yemen will be tomorrow's war. that's the danger we face. >> reporter: that's one reason the u.s. is so worried about the claims by the northwest airline suspect. he says he traveled to yemen and was given bomb-making materials there by al qaeda. look at the map, and you see the immediate potential for disaster. al qaeda operatives in yemen are within striki

the question now, did the rookie do enough to unseat colt brennan? last season the cult of colt's lovers was huge. this preseason, not so great. after everything going right last year for colt, he struggled right out of the gate this preseason. he has three interceptions in his first three games, including this one near the goal line. last night colt was much better. he was 10 of 14 for 83 yards before leaving the game with a tweaked hamstring. i caught up with colt last night. he feels good about his chances of making the team, especially after a solid performance in jacksonville. >> i'm proud of the way i handled myself this preseason. i y not have gotten the stats or production i wanted overall. i'm proud i battled through and did good things. if worst-case scenario i wasn't invited back here, i know that would be an opportunity to open myself up. i love it here in washington. hopefully i proved enough this preseason where they still want to continue to invest in me and progress with me. >> colt brennan. they are not going to keep both quarterback
