very busy corridor in new york city there. so it will be interesting to figure out what they're going to do with it. right now, at new york's hudson river, divers and investigators are done for the night. they have been looking for bodies and wreckage from the terrible midair collision between a small plane and a sight seeing helicopter. it happened around noon eastern time. nine people apparently killed in all. so far, the body of two adults and one child as we reported have been recovered. joining me by phone is bob miller from over the airwaves.com. and bob you say traffic in the area is very dense and requires very careful piloting skills. you have got to be on your game? >> well that is right, don. it is extremely congested airspace down there. i should say that it is also controlled airspace. pilots operating along the hudson river can be in contact with la guardia tower or newark tower and receive traffic advisories all up and down the hudson river. there is a way they can do it just without any radio contact or radio c

we can tell you what the mayor of new york city said. mayor bloomberg held a news conference and he almost immediately said that this is a tragedy. it will not and does not have a happy ending. he confirmed the worst fears, that there were no survivors of this midair collision that happened shortly after noon east coast time. he calls it not survivable. he repeated that again. he said there was a piper saratoga that took off from teterboro airport, three people on board, including a child. and it was heading over the corridor here, visual flight rules in the busy hudson corridor and it collided with a tourist helicopter with five italian tourists on board and a pilot and then almost immediately, the mayor said, the plane ran into the backside of the chopper. it would appear that the exclusive pictures of that midair collision which fox just obtained from a family, confirms that fact and we could not tell and so far, nobody has been able to determine whether the plane was ascending or descending. but there are blind spots for both the cho

this is a fox news alert. i'm jamie colby with breaking news in new york. in the hudson river right now, a search is ongoing for survivors. you're looking at new vidio right now. a helicopter carrying tourists collided midair according to the nypd, the fire department here in new york and the coast guard, with a small airplane. there is no confirmed report about how many people were on that tour helicopter, but there is confirmation now that one person was rescued by the new york city fire department, pulled from the hudson river. this crash happened in lower manhattan off the hoboken, new jersey, and off the west side of manhattan. right now, the coast guard issuing is release confirming the midair collision shortly after noon today near pier 40 on the hudson river. again, one person has already been pulled. rescue operations on the hudson right now include police divers and emergency crews, all the resources that can be brought in. a pilot he we spoke to recently confirmed that there are many boats that are on the hudsonite now today that could be helpful

i'm john harwood of cnbc and the new york times and this is "the new york times" special edition on msnbc. >>> this hour, remembering ted kennedy. mourners are still passing through jfk memorial library. tens of thousands of people from across the country have waited in line for hours yesterday and today. we're in boston at the jfk presidential library. mike, talk about the secession of events that is going to unfold today. we know the senator's body arrived yesterday. he's been lying in repose. there's a service tonight and then more tomorrow. talk a little bit about what's on tap. >> that's right. well, this is the public part of it now, john. the opportunity for the public by the tens of thousands as you say to pay their last respects. i have to say that since before 8:00 this morning which had been the scheduled start of today's public viewing the lines have been as long as a quarter mile, eight across, very deep, moving very steadily. not -- certainly a sad group but not morose but representing all the demographic groups for which ted kennedy fought his entire 47-year senate career.

there were severe lightning strikes in upstate new york near buffalo yesterday. several roads were closed after power lines were knocked down by the storm. >>> and folks in hawaii are hunkering down as tropical storm felicia approaches. the storm is weakening as it heads towards the islands. it's suspected to hit tomorrow with sustained winds of 50 miles per hour and heavy rains. a flash flood watch has been issued for some areas. >>> further east, a powerful typhoon has struck china, killing as many as 22 people and forcing nearly 1 million to evacuate. neighboring taiwan and japan were also hit hard. hundreds of villages are flooded while thousands of homes and buildings have been destroyed. lucy kraft reports from tokyo. >> reporter: typhoon morakot came packing winds of over 70 miles an hour, powerful enough to uproot and snap trees. the chinese authorities were taking no chances. about 1 million on china's east coast were ordereded to flee. thousands of homes were destroyed, and hundreds of villages and towns flooded by the torrential rains. in taiwan meanwh

we understand as cnn confirms through variable sources, the faa as well as sources in the new york/new jersey area, that a helicopter, a tourist helicopter collided with a small plane there and many eyewitnesses who joined us throughout the last half hour described various things. these two aircrafts colliding and simply swirling and twirling into the hudson river there rescue teams were on their way to respond. according to one eyewitness, she says there was nothing buoyant. it didn't appear as though any remnants of the aircraft or even the helicopter were at the surface of that water. divers have been seen descending into the water trying to find signs of life. at least six people may have been onboard that tourist helicopter. it's unclear how many may have been onboard that small aircraft. joining us is scott schuman who was actually walking in the vicinity there with family members. heard this loud bang and then saw this twist of these two aircrafts descend into the water. scott, give me an idea of what you are seeing now. >> right now i see a bunch of boats in the water. there se

york city between new jersey and new york. there you see the recovery effort, as the mayor of new york city is calling it. all people on board the two aircraft that collided midair lost their lives including one child. there were five italian tourists up in a chopper on a lovely afternoon looking over the new york and manhattan skyline when they probably never knew what hit them. a plane, according to the mayor, struck them from behind. they fell into the water. watching the recovery efforts for the last several hours is our own laura ingle on the new jersey side in hoboken. laura, set the scene for us, what have you learned and what have you seen. >> reporter: right now we have been watching officials gather at a waterfront restaurant here along the shoreline and i want to show you three different things. we saw the press conference. you see a large group of people. there is at the outside of that waterfront restaurant. governor of new jersey governor announced there will be a 6:15 press conference. there is the possibility t
