it's the naacp's 104th annual convention. roughly 4,000 people are here. and as you might imagine, the topic of conversation continues to be the verdict. the verdict. although i got to tell you, as i've talked to folks here on the ground over the past day or so, a lot of people are now talking about what's going to happen next. there is that online petition that has now garnered roughly 1 million signatures. attorney general holder certainly going to be talking about what the justice department could and could not do moving forward. meanwhile, against a backdrop of all of this, short time ago,cy brin nanl fulton, trayvon martin's mother says in part, we are not going to let this verdict define trayvon. keel define our son's legacy. we have a long way to go to make sure this happens to nobody else's child. that's the latest from here in orlando, back to you. >> we'll talk more about the the attorney general and listen to his live remarks in just a moment. we are watching live shots of the naacp annual convention in orlando, florida, where attorney general h

naacp, oldest civil rights organization in this country. every year they have a number of panel discussions, a number of speakers. this year eric holder. but you talk to anyone for more than 10 or 15 seconds and they want to talk to you about the verdict, about the trial. but a lot of folks are also talking about moving forward. you know that the online petition that was started by the naacp to petition the justice department to engage in some sort of action now. at last check it was at close to 900,000 signatures. that seems to be the next step here at the justice department. i talked to ben jealous this morning, president of the naacp. he's optimistic that petition much like the online petition which led they think to the prosecution of george zimmerman, they think that this petition could very well have the same result. this afternoon the attorney general eric holder set to address the convention at 4:00. he will of course be talking about the verdict, just as he did in d.c. on sunday at the delta sigma theta, 100th anniversary. but he's

handled it at an naacp convention the best he could. they're under enormous pressure from people that are you be set over this verdict to do something. there can be investigations. but experts have spoken and it would be nearly impossible to charge george zimmerman with a hate crime. there's even a potential this would be, recent expansion in 2009 of that law might be struck by the supreme court if it goes before it, so they're really out of choices, but to keep talking and remain in the debate, i thought it was smart of president obama to talk about this is a chance to look at our gun laws and the safety of our streets. you talk about what you can, but i don't think they're making it about race. i think there are people that want to, but they're trying to say we'll do what we can to look at these laws and consider the information. there's no indication they plan to go on a fool's errand in terms of using government resources on charges that they really can't bring. >> let's talk about the law. the law is in effect in 23 states, laws al

but it did not respond directly to the naacp. this morning the white house said all questions on that issue will have to go to the justice department. naacp president ben jealous told candy crowley today he's been in touch with officials at the justice department. let's listen to that. >> they will make a choice about whether or not they will pursue criminal civil rights charges. we are calling on them to do just that because when you look at his comments and when you look at comments made by young black men who lived in that neighborhood about how they felt, especially targeted by him, there is reason to be concerned that race was a factor. >> now, reason to be concerned versus making a case. two very different standards. important to note, prosecutors had available to them a law on the florida books that is an aggravating crime for picking someone because of among other things race. they chose not to charge george zimmerman with that. we'll talk to candy crowley more about that this hour. >> many leaders called for calm after t

you were blacklisted from the naacp convention? >> absolutely. i've been blacklisted for a number of years because i've been trying to get the naacp to come out and take a stand when black conservatives are criticized and targeted because of our views. all i want to do was talk about people empowering themselves, how they can be self-sufficient and not rely on others, not rely on government. but on the flip side, that's what the naacp and the rest of the black liberal establishment does not want the black community to hear. they want blacks to be victims and to think there's racism and they can't get ahead and really it's a lie. >>steve: you guys wanted to at t-pbd and perhaps speak -- attend and perhaps speak and at least have a table and what were you told? >> we work with freedom works and wanted to be part of the exhibit hall. we were willing to pay as a nonprofit to have a booth there. we were told there was no room for us. clearly when we went there, we took shots, there was a lot of rooms. since when does a nonprofit reject money? >>steve:

some of the youngest members of the naacp. i ran into a group of eagle scouts. we talked about why they were here at the convention. we talked about that not guilty verdict and we also talked about moving forward. take a listen. >> we felt a sense of hopelessness. me personal, i took from it that we have to move on and move forward. we can't sit and wallow in what has happened and learn from it and continue to progress and move forward. >> reporter: again, he's talking, of course, about the verdict and moving forward. and we are going to continue to talk to folks throughout the day, chris. as you indicated, that's what everyone here continues to talk about, that not guilty verdict. we should know, the naacp wants to make sure this is a convention that is covering other things as well. voting rights act is, of course, a hot topic. sean donovan is here, the h.u.d. secretary and talking about predatory lending and kathleen sebelius is here talking about obama care. this is the 104th annual convention for the naacp here in orlando. >> craig, thank you so much. >>> g

he joins us live from the convention from the naacp in orlando. craig, as i understand it, almost 1 million people have signed this petition. >> yeah, close to a million have signed online. they expect that number to climb. here in orlando, the convention hall starting to fill up. attorney general eric holder expected to speak at 4:00. he'll of course be talking about that verdict that came down. we also expect him to spend some time talking about voting rights as well. you probably recognize this man. this is reverend william barber. he's the state conference president of the north carolina state naacp. first of all, let's start with the verdict. how has that decision, how has that jury's decision changed the tone of the convention here in orlando? >> well, it's a disturbing dÉjÀ vu that has made us more determined. we see an avalanche attack on votedi in voting rights. now this decision. 58 years ago a black kid went to the store to get candy and ended up dead. 58 years later, a black boy goes to the store to get candy and winds up dead. the l

the naacp and the aclu, they're calling on doj to act. the naacp they started this petition. it's posted on their website and posted on moveon.org and the traffic is so heavy on the naacp website for people trying to fill out the petition and the website is temporarily down. it crashed. they did tell us that they were able to collect some 230,000 signatures. moveon.org at last check they secured about 150,000 signatures and these are people who say that george zimmerman violated trayvon martin's fundamental right to live. in response to the call for action, the department of justice just put out a statement just a short time ago saying that experienced prosecutors will determine if there is any evidence to show that they are able to prosecute on the basis of a violation of criminal civil rights. and of course, it has to be within their jurisdiction. so, don, at the very at least, what we know based on holder's own words in the past, charging zimmerman with a hate crime would be very tough. take a listen. >> federal hate crime, we have to prove the highest standard in the law,

the naacp is calling for it. holder had given a speech, i believe about a year ago where he said that they were going track it. i think it is going to be harder than typically you see in department of justice cases like this. >> because what? because there's no police officer? >> there's no police officer so no state action. so the type of charges they would typically use aren't going to be available under those provisions. they can find other ways but i think they are going to have to look and find ways not only that they can get a hack and get involved, but also have a winnable case. the last thing they want to do is follow up this defeat at the state level with a defeat at the federal level. >> okay. in your conversation weise surae chinn, we've talked about that you've got five sons. >> five sons, yes. >> what are you saying to your sons about this? what specifically? because i know they're asking about it. my son, an adult, very upset about. this i love him to death, but we're having to talk about this. what

on the one hand you have about 3,000 people attending this naacp convention here in orlando. i've been speaking with many of them. many of them are urging the department of justice to file those federal civil rights charges against george zimmerman. let's not forget obviously that the naacp is pushing online petitions, as you mentioned, nearly a million people are urging the same thing. and also as you mentioned it's going to be pretty tough to do that because in order for the department of justice to bring those charges to win, they need to prove that george zimmerman acted because of his race because a lot of experts are saying will be a tough bar to clear in terms of how attorney general eric holder will face the pressure here at the naacp, we're told by an administration source tells our senior producer that he will elaborate on the larger issues in the case but he will not go further in terms of talking about whether the status of the investigation or whether federal charges will be filed, wolf. >> one thing you should know, shannon, we're also getting some information f

the university called by the university's naacp. emotions are high, aren't they audrey? >> very much so, lauer acxfing hundreds will gather around the flag pole for an individual in honor of that travel they will also be protesting what many call the injustice of george zimmerman's acquittal. protests like this one outside the courthouse in sanford florida, sprung up almost immediately after the verdict was read. here in dc people spilled out of the bars and restaurants on you street northwest and marred to the justice department. this protest lasted well into the evening. speakers are urging supporters to help join the effort to get the justice department to file civil rights charges against george zimmerman. the naacp is already distributing a petition to that defense. >> if michael vick can go to jail for fighting dogs george zimmerman can go to jail for shooting somebody walking up the street. >> i pray in the no riots and no fights and nothing crazy happening. we have been through that already in the past. we can't heal that way. >> thankfully the protests across th

is eydie, a senior director for voting rights for the naacp. always good to see you. first of all, how is the new voter i.d. bill before the north carolina senator, how is this bill different from the one passed by the house back in april? >> well, when we look at this legislation that is before the north carolina senate, this photo i.d. is very harsh. it's one of the harshest photo i.d. measures that we have seen in our nation. when we look at it particularly the fact that students have been systemically cut out. you cannot use a student i.d. you can't even use a public employee i.d. as the measure that is before the north carolina senate currently. it also cuts out any type of i.d.s that are given by the states for people that utilityize state reourselves or state assistance. so when you look at this photo i.d., it's very clear that the photo i.d. is meant to disenfranchise voters and that is why we are seeing an outpour of voters in the state of north carolina across many demographics. when you look at the excellent work that is led by rever

naacp says it's far from over. they are calling in the justice department to bring civil rights charges of some kind against george zimmerman highlighting the fact this has really become a racially charged case. was it from the beginning an inherently racial case. >> it wasn't a racial case. it was a local issue, a tragedy trayvon martin was killed, these two elements came together. it became a national case when president obama injected himself saying if i had a son, he would look like trayvon. when he pulled out the playbook and property out jesse jackson, locals in the naacp chapter president, miss houston from the ame baptist church, they got together. joe madison, mark thompson, they turned this not into justice and due process but into justice based on a black victim narrative. >> lets listen to the trayvon martin family attorney. he said it was race and it started from the beginning. >> to everybody that put their hoodies on and to everybody who said i am trafb, his family expressed their heartfelt gratitude
