like many major cities, san jose has a crime problem. police say in the first six months of the year, officers removed 221 guns off the streets. since mid-june, police have arrested 88 people for felonies and got eight more weapons out of the hands of criminal, thanks in part to a highly visible foot patrol. >> officers are getting out of their cars, walking the back areas known to high levels of gang activity. >> reporter: police say homicide is up 33% over the same time period last year. however, the total number of violent crimes are down. a decrease of 16%. it's taken many officers extra shifts to do it. >> you have gang suppression details going out. we're sending quite a few out there. those officers are enduring overtime. is it sustainable? no. everyone knows that. but right now it's when it is needed. >> reporter: at the end of the summer, they will evaluate to see what too do next. the force will dedicate 14 officers to combat gang violence. paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> a san jose woman is angry and upset after police

i can see that from the san jose meteorology department showing three pictures of san jose here over the estuary. temperatures, starting off in the 50s for almost everybody. it definitely show as difference in the pattern. one day, two days we get a low coming in. we cool down. and then high pressure builds in and then tuesday, we had the cooldown. not much is changing unless you are far enough inland. then it gets warm to hot. coast and bay, 50s and 70s. very low 80s. some of therures inland will top out today. there's too much fog, too much of a west wind and the temperatures in the higher elevations are not in the 80s. they are in the 70s. big difference from a couple of weeks ago. antioch is 59. a couple of weeks ago they were 79. that along with the fog and the west wind, continuing. inland temperatures, they are toasty. thick fog for a few. there's reduced visibility being reported for a few locations. there's a westerly breeze. 60s to 90s. some areas 80s, 90s. you get closer to the water. the car thermometer will be all over the place if you are going east to west or vice vers

new information involving breaking news out of san jose. a police officers has shot and killed a pit bull just north of downtown. cate caugiran found out it reported with mail theft. >> reporter: we are at third and empire. there's still quite a bit of activity going on now. we know that officers were conducting a follow-up investigations at this house at third and empire. they were doing a probation search. when the officers get to the home a woman answered the door, then san jose police say a pit bull came out of the basement area and then police say the dog bit the officer on the lower left leg. then the other officers on scene shot and killed the dog fearing for the officer's life. the injured officer was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay. now, san jose police tell me they came to this area after witnesses saw three suspects drive away after breaking into mailboxes at another apartment complex and police tracked down the license plate to this address and they tell me now that they are continuing the investigation in that

. >>> some developing news down in san jose. nearly 100 cats are killed in an overnight house fire and now we are learning why so many animals were inside the home. kpix 5 reporter sue kwon talk to the homeowner just moments ago and joins us with more. sue. >> reporter: carol miller lives in this house here in south san jose and a very devastating night for her. right now there are construction crews on site boarding up the home. the fire broke out here at around 1:45 a.m. carol was sleeping. her dog started barking and woke her up. she made it to a back patio through some thick smoke and flames and there was an enclosure back there to keep animals from escaping. she had about 100 cats inside the house. and she could not get out. but the firefighters were able to rescue her. >> apparently, only 7 have survived. and another friend of mine who is a rescuer has taken the rest of them to the animal hospital. then we'll move them from there up to my vet where they need to be under observation for a while yet. animal control periodica

this is 101 in san jose. even though the radar and road weather index showing the potential for wet roads, they're not really wet, maybe damp in spots. don't let your guard down t. green painted over the map shows the entire part of san jose, 680, 101 and 880 likely to have moisture, wed roadways. that could mean slick roadways from the oil and grease out there. you see south of 280 looks dry as far as our road weather index goes. as far as traffic, not a big deal. 101 at the south corridor. it's a surface street off to the side of the road. the blue here through the altamont pass, a lot of rain, talking about the thunderstorm breaking up over there. we do have possible wet roads and maybe ponding and puddling as you come across the altamont pass. by the time you get to highway 84, you get damp roadways again. traffic builds from 84 through livermore and 580 approaching the dublin interchange where things dry out toward castro valley. san mateo bridge, a nice drive over the bay. you're looking westbound with
