that's now on the front page of "the washington post." and the reason it is is because the cia didn't keep this assessment to itself. they gave this assessment to people in the u.s. government. and the question is, i think, the most disturbing part of what has just been broken here is how much of this information they gave to people in the u.s. government before the election. and that's, i think, probably the biggest part of this story here. this is totally new tonight. the "post" describes what they say was a secret briefing for congressional leaders in september. again, i'm going to vote directly here. this came out in the last hour. so i haven't written this up and given you a big explanatory thing about it. by mid-september white house officials had decided it was time to take that step and name and blame but they worried doing this before the election unilaterally without bipartisan congressional backing, that would make obama vulnerable to charges that he was using intelligence for political purposes. they would seek support. so the

and now it has leaked to the washington post. and now we seeing an analysis of what russia was up to during this election that is much more detailed than anything we knew before. >> first we need to congratulate malcolm for being ahead of the curve on this. there have been lots of calls on capitol hill, but some republicans in the last few days started joining in for an a public inquiry, investigation of what's gone on. it's quite clear that the cia, fbi and nsa have been looking into this for quite some time. we just didn't know what they had found. although they did say in october that there were indications russia was behind the hacking. but there were a lot of reports that russia was just messing around to mess around and make things uncertain. i'm not sure if it's a report, it's an assessment that russia was doing this purposefully to put trump in the white house. and almost more explosive, i think this is bigger than watergate now. and just as explosive is the telling of its story, that during the campaign obama went to con

according to the washington post, a code associated with a russian hacking campaign was found at a vermont electric company. it's unclear the intention and when it was entered into the computer. they sited an official among its sources who say the actively us disrupt utility operations. lucy, has there been any reaction from russia on this? >> reporter: no reaction specifically to this allegation of the vermont hack. it's the new year's holiday here. a huge celebration. i want to add some caution. this appears to be an isolated laptop, not a hack of the entire u.s. power system, per se. i want to read a statement issued by the burlington electric department. they said that they -- i quote here -- that's what they are saying. no reaction from russia so far about that. a lot of reaction though, of course, to this spat between russia and the u.s. it has been interesting to watch the evolution of russia's response which went from name calling and finger pointing two days ago, with the russian embassy trolling obama on twitter, tweeting a photograph of a lame duck. the russian foreign ministry

said the "washington post" alleged this hack and said the "washington post" did not criteria any sort of evidence. we should be careful, of course, with this kind of story. because it does seem that there was one computer that was infected with this malware. so it's not necessarily the hacking of the vermont power grid. i want to read for our viewers the statement of the burlington electric department. they wrote, we detected the malware in a single burlington electric department laptop not connected, and this is important, to our organization's grid systems. we took immediate action to isolate the laptop and alerted federal officials of this finding. so it does seem like it's an isolated case. of course, russia is not known to comment to many of these hacking allegations. they have been flatley denying the allegations they have hacked the u.s. elections. we have seen very accusatory language from officials here in moscow. the foreign ministry spokeswoman trying to portray the obama administration as trying to sync relations between the two countries writing, and, quote, calling them

what do you make, bernie sanders publishes this op-ed in "the washington post" slamming mr. trump's efforts in indianapolis. in the meantime, workers in indianapolis couldn't be happier. >> yeah, carol, so that's a piece that actually ran in my section of "the washington post." [laughter] or if state department says put in new -- instead of seventh floor -- trevor trish you know -- >> nothing to do with russia. she needs to take responsibility

and beth, let's begin with the "washington post" report on the cia. how did they learn about this, and why are we hearing about it now? >> yeah. i think a lot of premasking the question. we suspect and reported throughout the final months of the campaign that there was evidence suggesting that russia was involved in the leak of the dnc emails, the leak of campaign -- hillary clinton campaign chairman john podesta's emails. that it came from wikileaks who received it from sources within russia, perhaps the government top of the level. now we're seeing this confirmed. unfortunately now it's after the election, before we might have been able to do something about it or bring the truth to light. there was evidently some -- some effort to not release it before the election, looking in a way to yet again sort of disrupt the election, the obama administration was really grappling with how to handle this. and there was some pushback among republicans including mitchell mcconnell. evidently recently to cast doubts on the intelligence. so all we know is that a

>> there's no doubt based on our reporting at the "washington post" that the trump family, specifically the sons, are involved with the charity, supporters of the charity, associated with the charity. the question in contention right now from the trump transition is whether they had any role in setting up this kind of charitable donation for access arrangement. there's been that denial that's been issued. but it's one of these murky territories the trump organization and ss specially the family is encountering moving from the private to the public sector. they'll probably need a lawyer with them, each and every step of the way. >> david cay johnson, them just saying that -- the only fact we have on the table is the filing for the foundation with those two trump sons' name on it so i don't understand how them saying "we didn't do it" gets them out of hot water here. >> this is a tactic you'll see throughout the trump presidency. when i saw this initially i thought oh, this is from the onion, it can't be true, even the trumps are not that crass and then i ran down the documents about it.

i'm joined by "washington post" reporter craig whitlock who broke this story. craig, let's start with what you discovered. >> yes, we don't need anonymous sources to tell us. we got the actual documents from the u.s. army that summarize a secret u.s. military investigation into then major general michael flynn in 2010 when he was the u.s. army -- excuse me, the nato intelligence chief in afghanistan. the investigation itself is still classified. it's classified as secret. so we don't have the investigation itself, that report, but we have a summary from the u.s. army called an advance information report about general flynn. it found, as you said, he inappropriately shared classified material with foreign military officers while he was serving in afghanistan. now, the investigation also found that he did not do so knowingly, and so he was not disciplined by the army as a result. this did put his career on ice for about a year. he was summoned back to washington. he was eventually promoted to lieutenant general. but, you know, this is a significant disclosure int

according to the washington post, a malware code associated wihe russian hacking campaign was found in a laptop at a vermont electric company. the post cited a senior obama administration official among its sources who say the russians did not actively use the code to disrupt utility operations. c's hans nichols is at the white house withore for us today. what do you know about this and is there any reaction from the white house? >> no reaction from the white house yet. still probably asleep in hawaii. what we know is on thursday when the president announced the sanctions as well as the expulsion of those 35 diplomats, he also talked about defensive measures preventative measures that key u.s. institutions could take as a result of that, a vermont utility ran those operations and discovered it may have been compromised. russian hackers may have been probing for weakness in a vermont utility, according to an explosive report in the washington post. once alerted to the potential infiltration, burlington electric quickly scanned their system for the malicious code, the utility confirmed.
