that includes 101 in san jose. that was a very tense situation for drivers this morning as it shut down rush hour in the south bay for several hours. >> yeah, we saw these chopper shots earlier this morning. you're absolutely right, janelle. there were back ups. people coming northbound couldn't continue at the 680 interchange. mike has been following this since 4:00. mike, finally things are flowing. >> that's right, sam. you and i were here. first the water was flowing. now the traffic flowing again in the south bay. this critical section of 1 0 1 was completely closed from 680 to 280, all the way to 880. this elbow right here. they had it closed because of flooding just right there over coyote creek. that has since cleared. all lanes are reopened. 280 and 87 took the brunt of that commute. the north bound push continued to buildup for 87. coming up 280 and the alternates. nort natal fortunately the schools are on ski week. now back to 101, pete suratos was standing in the middle of the freeway when it was close

so, looking now at san jose, our storm ranger mobile doppler truck, we have it parked in san jose to give us the best view. there is a look at it now in action as it continues to scan around. this gives us the highest detail and puts us ahead of what the other radars are picking up on. so, definitely a great tool. we are the only ones with this and it is also picking up on that rain right there eden veil where the coyote creek continues to roll farther to the south where that goes through. we are also seeing some very heavy rain around santa clara, approaching downtown san jose, and moving toward wayne as well as milpitas. so, expect this to continue to move in with some pockets of some heavy rain. the flooding on the coyote creek, it's in effect until further notice. so, all of these areas, seeing here shaded in green along the coyote creek, will be uppnder a close eye as we go through the rest of the day and we may see more of those water levels going up. we'll talk about how full the reservoirs are and some of the other warnings around the bay area coming up in about 6 or 7 minute

it was a long night here in san jose. here's a story from one man who got an early knock on the door. >> man, i got woke us early, at 1:30 in the morning, the cops came and knocked on the door to tell us to evacuate the apartments. and my wife got the dog and got out of there. i parked at the parking lot over there. >> reporter: did you sleep in the car? >> yeah, i slept in the car. >> reporter: long night. he and his wife and two dogs, they plan to head to san francisco. they're now going to go stay with their daughter. they've had enough of this and there's no word of when this evacuation order will be lifted and from the looks of things, look at this live picture, water is still a problem here. this is 28th and santa clara. you can see they have shut down that section of 28th over there, so police have ordered people to leave but it's also difficult to get around here to move around, because of different street closures, of course, highway 101 shut down in both directions, so problems persist all over the place here. p

san jose creek. rescue crews say 5 people in a homeless encampment near los lagos golf course were trapped after coyote creek flooded early this morning. some took to the trees to escape the dangerous waters. kron4's will tran spoke to one of the victims moments after he was rescued. san jose mayor sam liccardo questions the water district on tuesday. that's back when the flooding began. our senior investigator, steven sauk, has been poring over those eye-opening revelations that could lead to a state investigation. >> we reviewed pages of e-mails e-mail exchanges between mayor sam liccardo's office and officials from the can santa clarita water district. the e-mails tell the story of what the city knew and department know in the days and moments leading up to the flood. they show that water district officials badly overestimated how much water they could release through anderson dam without flooding the neighborhoods downstream, leaving the city of san jose unprepared for the devastation that was to come. so much water was coming over the spillway last saturday that it equaled the amount of water in a large olympic swimming pool rushing over the dam every second. according to these e-mails from san jose's mayor's office and santa clara valley water district officials, that large amount of water had all of them on the lookout for t

the cleanup continues tonight in san jose. this is the rock springs neighborhood where tonight power washers, you can see, are out on the streets trying to get rid of some of the mud that's caked on cars. you can see from storm ranger above. on the ground, the work continues to try to get electricity up and to get people back into their homes. probably one of the most startling images from the flood days has been the sight of 28 horses surrounded by water flowing from coyote creek. in some cases the horses had water up to their knees. desperation for the animal owners, of course, and a lot of anguish for viewers who saw it on tv. yesterday they went back out to try to see if they could move the horses. the waters were too rough. so they moved them to dry land. today finally success. scott budman joins us now. they finally got the horses out. what a relief. what kind of condition are they in? >> reporter: they are in really good condition, jessica. the owners tell me that they are getting well fed. they look good. they feel goo

water just about everywhere it shouldn't be in san jose today. streets flooded, like this intersection at oakland road near the 101. firefighters driving from one emergency to another as people find their neighborhoods filling with water like these apartment buildings on 12th and key streets affecting 500 people, many of whom watched as water rose up through their carports towards their homes. >> water has gone up about four feet in the last three hours. >> marquez is frustrated because he says the city of san jose didn't warn his elderly parents that fred watson park was likely to flood, and now the water is at his parents' front yard. >> they're telling me now that this water's going to raise up another four feet. >> reporter: and on south 17th street, one of rich longston's family homes is submerged in water to the roof, and two of his other houses next door are flooded through the lower levels. >> we weren't sure how much water was going to come out. and now it's just a lot more devastating than we thought. >> reporter: longston's mother used

the same sad scene played out all over san jose. water covering 20 acres of park this afternoon, and an hour later? >> you don't expect any flooding in a downtown area, yeah. >> reporter: this is 16th street near williams street park. you can see a row of cars covered in water, trees fell, water rushed into homes and residents there also had to evacuate. >> what am i going to do now besides freak out? i'm going to wait and see what comes in the morning. >> reporter: so far time has not been on the san jose side. analysts thought the creek would have stopped rising by early afternoon but it did not. the city's mayor admits the speed of the flood water is staggering. >> all the data we have been getting so far is not exactly accurate. so i'm not relying on anything at this point, we're just taking care of each other. >> reporter: others needed a place to stay tonight, i had to say while i was there a lot of people were coming by to donate food, clothes, really anything that they could do to help. live in san jose tonight abc 7 news ne
