to somebody with cia experience, does that seem like part of a pattern to you? >> they bother me too. i've heard from former colleagues. individuals still on the inside that they bother them too. fact of the matter is, ever since the cia was founded in 1947, there's been an understanding that intelligence and politics don't mix. cia needs space to provide policy makers with unbiased, unvarnished intelligence analysis that they need and deserve. that's why it's been so troubling to see president trump, time and again, put his finger on this scale, on the intelligence scale, whether as republican nominee casting aside the intelligence community's high confidence assessment that russia was actually behind this, or in this case, asking mike pompeo to meet with bill binney at cia headquarters, implicit signal that donald trump himself believes in this crazy theory. to me the most proximate analogy is if george w. bush asked george tenet, director of national intelligence, to meet with 9/11 truther about the 9/11 attacks. that's same scale as what we've seen. >> barba

the question is what happens at cia? if it's tom cotton as everybody assumes, you know, the senator from arkansas, they have a bit of an electoral issue. which is, they don't want to lose that republican seat. it's got a republican governor, they don't have a lot of time to get somebody in place to run in 2018, and you know, cotton's up in 2020. so that would be safe for them. if you're worried about control of the senate. so they do have some pieces they have to move around. >> how do you see it? >> well look, i think rex tillerson was an experiment that didn't work. you know, it was an idea to try to go outside of the box to find someone without any experience in politics, who had experience in business and kind of thrust them into the highest level of government. think of maybe another example of that experiment that we're living through now as well, but that isn't the principle reason, i think people feel that he is being pushed out here. it's more about the relationship and the loyalty to president trump than it is

joining me now is the former director of the cia and nsa. is it appropriate for the cia director to have this meeting? >> well, it's appropriate for the cia director to do what the president tells him. so i get that entirely. so i understand why at the end of the day director pompeo did this, but, anderson, i've got to believe that mike pompeo, this was the last thing that he wanted to do because it put him in such a compromising position with his own workforce. i mean, i think the real actor in this isn't director pompeo, it's president trump, who directed him to go do this and the act of meeting gave some throwaway to this conspiracy theory that it really didn't deserve. and i know in my heart that director pompeo knew that his workforce would not look upon this in any happy way. >> i mean, a meeting like that -- when the president tells you to, if you are the director of the cia, that's something you have to do. >> yeah. no, exactly. but, again, let me return to the prime actor here. this was done for political purposes by the president.
