brennan, a junior, was the child of irish immigrants. he won countless awards, starting in grade school and continuing through law school. he served on the new jersey supreme court prior to being nominated by president eisenhower to serve on the united states supreme court, where he used the same mahogany desk once used by justice brandeis. justice brennan had a leading hand in over 1100 opinions of this great court, including a lengthy list of landmark decisions. many of which he authored. he participated in over one quarter of the case is considered by this court in the last century. alluding to justice jackson's observation that the justices are aware that they are not infallible, justice brennan observed that one does not forget how much may depend on a decision. the course of vital social, economic, and political currents may be directed. that degree of modesty, coupled with an understanding of the awesome responsibilities of this court, may explain how an individual as gifted as justice brennan could work so very hard and bring suc
