Vulcan Review and Vulcan Advocate newspapers

Homesteaders and ranchers arrived in this area of southern Alberta, located eighty miles southeast of Calgary, before any town existed here. The Canadian Pacific Railway laid tracks through here in 1910 and planned a townsite. A variety of businesses soon started up. The first newspaper to serve the area was the Vulcan Review, which began in 1912. (This was before Vulcan was incorporated as a village in late 1912.) This paper published for one year. The Vulcan Review was followed by the Vulcan Advocate, which is still being published. The newspapers contained notice of upcoming local events, community news, births, deaths and marriages, classifieds, professional listings and other items of interest to their readers. The newspapers have served as a vital link in the development of the town of Vulcan and the surrounding community.

Support for this collection was provided by the Vulcan and District Historical Society.
