Washington Township Museum of Local History

The Washington Township Museum of Local History collection contains texts and audiovisual material (moving images and audio) from the 1850s to 2000s. A majority of the collection consists of Washingtonian yearbooks and recorded oral interviews with residents of the Washington Township area. Subjects include the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and local history of Fremont, California.

Description : Sneden's Drug Store in IOOF Building. A traveling photoghrapher recorded the interior of Sneden's Drugstore in 1898, complete with its elegant gas lamp fixture. Niles received electrical services in 1900. Signs in the drugstore included 'toiletries, choice perfumes, for the complexion and teeth.' Sneden's was still going strong in 1914 when it was advertising a wide array of patent medicines as well as 'simple mixtures.' Call Number : 1996.3.1105

Description : Misrecorded in the museum collection as: Old Saloon in Niles with big redwood posts and some Niles folks, circa 1910-12. Original, vintage.  This mystery building seems not to have been in Niles at all but a product of wishful thinking. It was named for Don Augustin Alviso, the original Mexican grantee of the land. Early records show that there were two buildings on the grounds.
