On a rainy, miserable day in May ... we still have hope for the future. There is light at the end of the tunnel and, as shops and restaurants open, we have a taste of what we've missed for so long ... and it tastes good. And it is in this environment, that Cousin Silas brings the sixth and last part of his " ... and friends, volume eight", a wonderful mix of delightfully gentle ambience ("Starscapes" by Cousin Silas & Pat Pik, and "Travelling In Opposite...

What better way to start 2022 than with "Music For The Dark Days" ... an EP from the collaborative partnership of electronic musicians EISENLAGER and Sergio Mariani aka EISENLAGER MARIANI. "Music For The Dark Days" features four exceptionally beautiful ambient electronic tracks that expertly convey the dark days of winter ... the cold, biting wind and incessant, uncomfortable darkness ... the beating of your heart as move slowly, struggling with deep snow ... that sound of...

Sometimes music evokes feelings and feelings in turn evoke music. I have always tried to put as much of my feelings as possible into my music. I want to tell stories or rather make untold stories heard.  This whole album is based around death, loss, grief and despair. While most of the tracks were made a few months ago, after the untimely passing of my mother I felt I needed to make some more music just to try and cope with the situation. This how the title track and "We are all...

I recently met Cousin Silas for the first time a couple of weeks ago and I was taken by how genuinely lovely he was … a real down-to-earth chap with a wicked sense of humour … generous to a fault and a pleasure to be with. I say this because whilst I was down staying with him … he spoke of the Dronescape series and made particular mention of this instalment - Dronescape 010 (waag_drs010) - his tenth dronescape. He spoke of this being his best yet. Not in a bragging kind of way because he...

I really enjoyed listening to Cousin Silas' first voyage into Berlin School style longform electronic adventures, Unlimited Boundaries (waag_rel114) ... I still do, in fact, and never thought a follow-up would be so hot on its heels.       Galactic Procession (waag_rel116) follows closely in the footsteps of its predecessor albeit with a sound that is, again, reminiscent of Virgin-era Tangerine Dream or Klaus Schulze. It isn't a rehashing of the work that's come before ... either Silas or...

And so begins "Canon Alberic's Scrapbook" from Dr M. R. James' "Ghost Stories of an Antiquary" ... or at least my Penguin Books copy from May 1941 does. I received this copy from Cousin Silas when I stayed at his house at the end of August. This was the weekend that I met Ade Hodges and Kevin Lyons, the weekend...

Here we go again with another selection of one-take guitar improvs on weareallghosts from Cousin Silas ... along with a couple of bonus tracks. As before: no edits ... no overdubs. Just one man and his extensive collection of guitars ... pushing the boundaries of atmospheric sound.  Twang Two ... or Twang! Too ... or waag_rrl008 ... however you want to call it deserves another listen. It didn't deserve to be abandoned as it was and I, for one, am glad to give it a home on waag, albeit slightly...

I have a whole heap of love for the experimental electronic weirdbient music of Robert H Nunnally Jnr aka Gurdonark. It is so different and out there from the rest of weareallghost’s roster. “Constellation Blackbird” continues the musical journey Gurdonark first started with WAAG back in late 2012 with “Open Spaces”. This isn’t easy listening: it has dissonant frequencies, naive sounds and glitchy melodies that may not be instantly accessible. However I, for one, enjoy his...

For me, it is wonderfully bittersweet to release "Scenes from Suburbia (waag_rel136)" by Cousin Silas & Candy L so close to  Candy's birthday ... I'm not sure how old she would have been if she had not lost her battle against cancer and, to be honest, it doesn't matter ... what matters is that the world and our wee community of DIY ambient musicians is considerably poorer for her not being with us. "Scenes from Suburbia (waag_rel136)" was created in collaboration...

I get really excited when I receive an album from Cousin Silas and Kevin Lyons. Theirs is a particularly vibrant collaboration, one that points to the very best of weird and science fiction. "The Moorcock Principle" is their fifth outing and the very name of it speaks of the very best in fantastical writing.  I could be wrong but I'm sure track three -  Frank & Jerry's Final Confrontation - refers to Michael Moorcock's character, Jerry Cornelius.  This is my kind of ambient...

Back in 27 May 2014 waag release “Creation By Inertia (waag_rel052)” by Christopher Alvarado … an album I consider a remarkable recording and one I was proud to release on weareallghosts. I am extremely grateful to Christopher Alvarado for the opportunity to release “Modified by Inertia (waag_rmx002)”, a series of remixes of tracks from the original album along with a brand new track from Alvarado entitled “An Eternity of Eyes”. I think it was the original "Ballard Landscapes" on Shaun Blezard's seminal Earth Monkey Productions imprint that introduced me to the rabbit hole that is Cousin Silas' music. A lot of water has flowed under the bridge since those days and my relationship with our Cousin Dave has flourished and developed in so many ways that I could never have foreseen. In short, I am proud to call him a friend and know, with absolute certainty, that weareallghosts would not be what it is without his...

I can't believe my little little netlabel is now on it's fifth release... and what a release it is. To be honest, I've been sitting on this for a wee while... after receiving it from Cousin Silas around the time 'waag_rel001' was released. I wanted to give that release time to become... and wanted this release to stand on it's own. Personally, I can't get enough of Cousin Silas' current sound... there is something timeless and otherworldly about the soundscapes he creates with his guitars,...

I am deeply honoured to present "Without Sin" from Detroit based musician Matthew VandenBrook and am proud to welcome him to the weareallghosts community. "Without Sin" is a fitting piece to be released on Good Friday, 2014 ... and while each listener will make of it what they will ... I, for one, have received remarkable inspiration from this piece as I have walked my own, personal Lenten journey. It is a dark, brooding piece of longform ambient music that threatens to...

I am particularly fond of Cousin Silas' longform pieces. Whether it is his dronescapes or the rerelease of Owlers Wood, Cousin Silas knows how to make longform music that is both interesting and engaging rather than monotonous and dull. He has raised the bar, at least for me, and graciously keeps feeding what is developing into an insatiable hunger for more. “Swirl (waag_rel082)” is his latest longform creation, one that explores the vastness of space and time within its 78 minute duration....

Of all the music Cousin Silas has released, especially on weareallghosts, I am fondest of his longform pieces. I find his Dronescapes especially fascinating because they have a versatility about them: I listen to them at work when I need to find my flow and block out a busy, open-plan office; I listen to them on the train when I want to dig into a book and block out a busy carriage; I listen to them when I need to rest and block out the busyness of my home and/or my brain; They work for me on a...

“Through a Cobweb Strange (waag_rel069)” from Cousin Silas … affectionately referred to as “the disco album” when discussing it with Dave prior to release … is full of beats. In fact, “Through a Cobweb Strange (waag_rel069)” features fifteen downtempo tracks that combine Silas’ particular style of ambient guitar with varying degrees of percussion. I love the variety of Cousin Silas’ music and gravitate towards different elements depending on my mood. He can and does turn his...

I was recently asked what I get out of running a wee netlabel ... I replied almost immediately: I help bring beauty to this world. I'm not a musician. I wish I was but I am not. Neither am I an artist in the pen-and-paper / paint-and-canvas kind of way. Again, I wish I was but I am not. Whilst I am kind of handy with a camera and have a thing for arranging typefaces on images, the way I bring beauty to this world is to help musicians like Cousin Silas get their sounds out there. I don't believe...

Earlier today I watched a programme that explored sensory deprivation using a flotation tank. The idea of nothingness was an idea both compelling and frightening to the host: sixty minutes of nothing is a rather intimidating prospect … just you and your thoughts. I wonder if that’s what some people think about longform drones … that a post-sixty minute ambient soundscape is, in some way, a scary proposition. I don’t know. What I do know, however, is that I like to be alone with my...

Sometimes life just doesn’t go to plan: People you hold in high regard let you down, risks you take don’t pay off and end up costing you dear, and that great idea that you had turns out to be anything but; you know what I mean. When life gets like that I try to retreat, refocus, and restart; and I greatly appreciate music that helps me do that. The twenty-eighth dronescape from Cousin Silas is one such piece of music and, to be honest, it couldn’t have come at a better time. Its rich,...

George Carlin once said ... "Have you ever started a path? No one seems willing to do this. We don't mind using existing paths, but we rarely start new ones. Do it today. Start a path. I was intrigued on a number of points: what would his ambient work sound like? will it fit with weareallghosts? why waag rather than self-publishing? could he wait for my schedule? All these questions were answered...

Today is a significant day for me, it is my Wedding Anniversary. I am married to Olwyn and have been for the last 18 years. We have seen so much together. I guess it is true what’s said: time does fly when you are having fun. Time is wonderful concept, isn’t it? it flies when we enjoy ourselves and drags when we don’t. Days, weeks, months, years; they all move so quickly and just like any chocolate bar, we don’t get as much now as we used to. That’s why I love Cousin Silas’...

Before you are 45 tracks from Cousin Silas and his friends. This is the fourth such compilation and it is, by far, the largest. Rather than single any one track out for praise, I will say this: how can you measure such creativity? Can you even attempt to do so using minutes or megabytes alone as your evidence? It is impossible. What Cousin Silas has done here by not only creating the initial music but by seeking out and bringing together his friends so they can aid him in creating their...

Ho Katechon (waag_rel132) by Cousin Silas & Sergio Mariani is an album that I have been very eager to share with you...  Ever since I heard Mariani's self-released "Secret Place", an album I absolutely adore, and then heard that Cousin Silas intended on recording a collaboration with him, I've been rather excited to hear it ... and once I heard it, I couldn't wait to share it with you. Ho Katechon (waag_rel132) is a truly exceptional album, filled with the kind of drifting, air,...

When Jaime Munárriz came to me and offered up another live recording from his Eraser Ears [Orejas Borradoras] collective, I jumped at the chance.  I love the soundscapes that they produce because they remind me of Tangerine Dream's seminal mid-70s period: albums like "Rubycon" and "Phaedra" were instrumental in my love and understanding of the broad church called "ambient music" ... and Eraser Ears do remind me of these spontaneous adventures in sound. ...

Cousin Silas' dronescapes have really grown from strength to strength ... developing into something of 'must have' recording for me. I tend to listen to at least one a day and love the headspace they give me. I know I am not alone ... and really appreciate all the comments I receive when one is released. I also value the support that some in the WAAG community provided and do not take it for granted. So this weekend we are going to put out not one ... but TWO dronescapes - 011 and 012. I...

What can I say about the music of Dominic Giam aka Ketsa? I'm not sure I have the right words to describe his style of ethnic folk music infused electronica. I could call it 'fusion' but that doesn't sound right. I guess it is his music ... and it is quality music that I am proud to present on weareallghosts . I've been a fan of Giam's for a while but his recent album on Invisible Agent really did sealed the deal for me - 'Al Kemet' is awesome! (...

"Seclusion (waag_rel138)", the latest album from my dear friend Robert H. Nunnally Jr aka Gurdonark, was created during the Covid-19 pandemic. It features his futuristic lullabies, collages that have been informed and inspired by the lockdown. A sense of unease and of distance pervades these soundscapes ... a  vast yet wistful emptiness that is expressed through uncertainty and dissonance.   These are uneasy times and this is uneasy music for these uneasy times ... but with the...

Dub is not a genre of music I have explored to any great degree. I am familiar with the work of Osbourne "King Tubby" Ruddock, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Mad Professor, and Adrian Sherwood; but not really gone further than that. However, the work of Cousin Silas and the Glove of Bones has really whetted my whistle for more! I thoroughly enjoyed their previous output - "Ornithology" and "Mabinogi" - but "New Dub Manifesto (waag_rel109)" feels so much...

Cousin Silas' music is a familiar constant in my life. His albums hold a place in my heart along with my favourite books and films; and yet I still get excited when I receive an album from him, eagerly awaiting what new direction he has taken or sound he has returned to. Cousin Silas (waag_rel106) is a fabulous return to the ambient soundscapes of his early weareallghosts releases ... there is something of "The Path Between The Trees (waag_rel001)" in this self-titled release ... a...

At the start of British Summer Time, we are grateful for the lighter nights ... we have hope in the UK for the future and, as vaccinations continue, we see light at the end of the tunnel ... we'll soon be out of this period of darkness. And it is in this environment, that Cousin Silas brings the fifth part of his " ... and friends, volume eight", a wonderful mix of delightfully gentle ambience ("Bondservant Ballad" by Cousin Silas & Sergio Mariani or "Interplanetary...

“Spero (waag_aa001_1-4)” is the first of four pieces by Simon Slator that are designed for the season of Advent. The four soundscapes that make up this first “Ambient Advent” collection are intended for contemplation and meditation during this busy period. Advent is synonymous with new beginnings, with the commencement or start of new things. Regardless of how you celebrate this holiday period, my wish is that the music Simon Slator has created will bring something new to you. This...

I love the music that Earlyguard produces and I was delighted that he agreed to create an exclusive long-form drone for my netlabel. 'Stigma' is a 45 minute piece… a single track that is the antithesis of everything within current 'popular' music. Earlyguard isn't about the quick hit or the catchy riff. He is far more than that. He creates space… space beyond time. He shapes his soundscapes in such a manner that the listener becomes fully immersed in his all-encompassing drones. It is...

Earlier in the year, August to be exact, I had the privilege of spending a few days in Fife, Scotland; As we drove to our digs in a farmhouse near Glenrothes, we decided to stop off in the beautiful village of Culross for a picnic lunch.  The rain that day did not stop but that didn't deter us from exploring the village. We wandered around the cobbled streets and spent some time in the Palace's Gardens, which were kindly opened by the National Trust for Scotland, the custodians of said...

It's been a while ... more than four years since the last instalment in the "Tales of Space Exploration" series from Brother Saturn aka Drew Miller ... and in that time Drew has grown as a musician and as a person.  We have heard from Drew in the intervening time ... " Unstable Lands (waag_rel097) ", " Apollo, can you hear me? (waag_rel104) ", and " Music for Sleep (waag_rel130) " ... but there has always been a desire, at least for me, to revisit the...

The fifth TWANG - "A Journey Through The Solar System & Beyond" - continues Cousin Silas' series of atmospheric ambient and experimental soundscapes that were each recorded in a single take with no overdubs or edits. Featuring 14 tracks from the original release and 2 further "bonus" tracks for this release, Twang Five is another fine continuation of and addition to the Twang series, one that delves into the deepest, darkest corners of space. From the opening track -...

Cousin Silas and I connected many years ago when I said some nice things about his work on Shaun Blezard's seminal 'Earth Monkey Productions' netlabel. Silas had released 'Geographics' and his first two Ballard Landscapes on EMP and I had picked them up. They were my kind of atmospheres: dark, eerie & powerfully emotive ... they conjured up desolate spaces and lands dotted with Cyclopean buildings before I had read Lovecraft and knew what a Cyclopean architecture was. "Great watery...

In a recent blog post, Joseph Mosby of josephmosby.com talked about using music to get “into the zone” … the zone being that point when we have complete concentration, complete focus. In his post - http://josephmosby.com/2015/02/15/the-psychology-of-a-small-playlist-on-repeat.html - he quotes Arkansas psychologist Elizabeth Hellmuth Margulis who wrote a book called “On Repeat: How Music Plays the Mind” that tangentially delves into this question … how does music on repeat help...

Weird fiction deserves weird music. When I read H.P.Lovecraft, I must do so with weird music in my ears. Over the years, my go-to for the soundtrack has been Emmalee Crane. That is until now. “Internal Furniture (waag_rel076)” is a deliciously weird collaboration between Cousin Silas, Tim Jones and Kevin Lyons; that was conceived during a long weekend together in Yorkshire. When the cat is away, the mice will play and boy did these mice play. Fuelled by horror movies, old TV shows and pulp...

I n April, I spoke of strange days requiring strange music ... that uneasy listening is ideally for the uneasy times that we experience.  I didn't think that, in what is now the second-half of 2020, things would remain so utterly weird:  Whilst our shops and restaurants and cafes and pubs open up ... we have face-masks and hand-sanitiser and still cannot hug our loved ones. Our movements are tracked and whole towns have been locked back down due to a resurgence in the virus. We have people...

waag_drs039 It has been a while since dronescape 038 and in that time waag has released a number of different flavours of our favourite Cousin's ambient music: remixed, one-take guitar-orientated, dub, progressive, and atmospheric; and whilst I love all that he releases, I do have a soft spot for his dronescapes.  There is something about Cousin Silas' longform ambient music that sucks me in and envelops me like a warm Pendleton blanket, comforting me and relaxing me, stilling my busy head and...

Not everyone can write longform music. It's not just a case of repeating a phrase and stretching it out for over an hour to create your drone; you have to make it interesting, and engaging ... it has to grab the listener's attention and keep it ... and it has to, dare I say, entertaining!  To make that kind of music take time and it takes talent ... and, most of all, it takes patience.  I am so glad Cousin Silas has all three!  weareallghosts are proud to present the thirty-sixth dronescape...

Kevin Lyons and I were daydreaming together, earlier today ... dreaming of opening up a space called "The End of Time" where the beer was microbrewed, the coffee was always fresh and made with v60s, and the music was decidedly ambient in nature with Cousin Silas playing live; Every night there would be a sci-fi film on and the kitchen would serve the best pizzas at any time of the day. I guess we can dream. I love Kevin Lyons' music ... it has a special something about it that always...

I have a lot of love for Scott Lawlor's music and was delighted to be approached by him to release his 'drone.excursion' series of longform drones. Inspired by the work of Cousin Silas, Lawlor is going on his own journey into post-sixty minute soundscapes ... and I am proud to support him in this endeavour. drone.excursion.001 (waag_dex001) aka 'the choral drone' is an intense vocal-orientated piece that reminds me of György Ligeti's "Atmospheres", a piece that is famous for being...

I love a good compilation for two reasons - they are a great way of discovering new music … and as I like to listen to a variety of music, a well curated compilation with a number of contributors gives me the variety I seek. This time last year I never dreamed I would have my own netlabel … and I certainly never dreamed I would be putting out my first compilation on said netlabel … a compilation that showcases wonderful independent talent. Some of the artists featured on this compilation...

It has been just over a month since we released the previous 2 instalments of Cousin Silas' Dronescape series ... and I couldn't wait to bring another one to you. And what an instalment this is!!! The 13th Dronescape is a bold, upfront exploration of space and time through ambient sound. It is 70 minutes of sheer of unadulterated joy ... a truly immersive longform journey with an almost tangible sense of cinematic proportion ... and I, for one, love it. This series just gets better and better....
