Yaletown

These moving images consist of raw footage and finished productions from the Yaletown Productions fonds (AM1553). Their digitization was made possible with support from the City of Vancouver's 125th Anniversary Grants Program and the participation of the Government of Canada.

The moving images shown here span the period 1969 to 2003. Most are professional documentary productions. There are also home movies, commercials, student films, experimental films and one independent feature film. The subject matter is varied: wildlife and the natural world, promotion of the Canadian Department of National Defence, travel, history, a climb of Mount Everest for charity, Expo 86, and promotion of the city of Vancouver.

Award-winning productions include "The Gift of Water", "Vancouver - Pacific Celebration", "Winter Survival", "Water Colours" and "Land Above the Trees".

The productions are attributed to a variety of authors, reflecting the different corporations represented in the fonds, as well as independent films by Michael Collier. New Horizon Films, Ltd., North Wind Films Ltd, the Tommy Tompkins Wildlife Films company, Urban Safari Films, Yaletown Entertainment Corp. and Yaletown Productions Inc. are all represented here.

Michael Collier is the common thread relating the creators of this fonds to each other. He has been engaged in the film industry in Vancouver for over 40 years. Since graduating from Simon Fraser University in 1969, Collier has filmed and produced many award-winning films and collaborated with many internationally known producers and directors. He has made experimental films, documentaries, tourism films, educational films, television commercials, television shows, and a feature-length film. Since 2005, Collier has been retired from the film business, and in 2010, he donated Yaletown Productions' records to the City of Vancouver Archives.

Collier is a founding director of the Pacific Cinematheque, a founding member of the B.C.Branch of the Canadian Film and Television Production Association, and a 30-year member of the Directors Guild of Canada.
