Thank you for the quick reply. Who is BARFTTD?

We are working with George Blood to do digitization at very high quality and cost effectively. I hope we can use many of the same tools and workflow.

(I had no idea yodeling was so popular:

Thanks for the plug Mr K.
I'm the equipment repair and digitizing member of the group. We have good A/D converting and recording equipment. We also have decent sound cleanup software.
But I rebuilt an Aeolian Vocalion 'Table Grand' model phonograph to have the original listening experience. So I will upload two sets of each 78. One through the most modern equipment I have and one through the original phonograph and picked up by a Zoom.
Thanks again for the Archive.
PS. The phonograph is very useful during a power outage.

Brewster,
We've uploaded a test file of a digitized 78 RPM. A couple of sound programs were used to lightly remove some crackle.
The file can be found here.

The process took some improvisation as BARFTTD Toasters usually only digitize home recorded tape reels. These tapes often require different machines to get the right playback. Phonograph records are a more robust media. Several record playing methods were tested before this sound file was created. Surprisingly, attaching an Aeolian Vocalion Reproducer to a Smart Phone strapped to plastic '76 Chevette model produced fairly good quality sound.
That test can be found here.

One of us is making a small video of his visit to the old Aeolian Vocalion phonograph factory to look for parts for the player. If the first sound file is acceptable we can digitize a few dozen others.
Again, thanks for the Archive.

https://archive.org/details/PhoneChevettePhonographTest that is hilarious!

it sounds really good. oh, can we use the full image of the 78 as part of a button we are looking to make for The Great78 Project? https://ia801508.us.archive.org/0/items/Decca24457DickHaymes/Decca24457A.jpg

If you get jazzed to lots more, we should coordinate on metadata formatting.

Onward!

Thanks, the idea made the folks here laugh. For those who might be worried about damaging the records; the rubber wheels on the Chevette were the correct spacing to avoid touching the recorded groves and causing damage while the test was done. But it also showed that the idea of a direct to smart phone attachment is possible with some fabrication and sound chamber work .
It might be best to create a new record label for the 78 button. I created a test file and put it at the link below. Any text can be put on the label.

As far as metadata, if it can be explained to me I can do it. But I am aware of only about 24 to 30 records at hand so that might not be worth it.
Thanks again.

glad to hear that "no record was damaged in the making of this video" :)

On the button, can you change the license from "no derivatives"? I think the cc-nd is not in the spirit of what you intended.

brewster,
I have removed the license. I do not see a method to only remove the "no derivatives". If you would like the text changed I have the original file in Illustrator and can revise it.

Yes, "No media was damaged in the making of this video". A great deal of effort is spent in not damaging the originals in our collection. Storage conditions, de-gaussing the players, and equipment care are top priorities. I have a sense of stewardship about maintaining these historic objects.
I think that's why my wife takes good care of me.
