U.S. films released before 1964 became public domain if their copyrights weren't renewed after 28 years. I can't find a renewal for HIS GIRL FRIDAY (1940).

If there were a renewal, it would look something like this one (for a Bogart film):

Whoever claims to be the "copyright holder" ought to be required to show the text of the copyright renewal and to tell us where we can find and verify that text.

The film is included in the Mill Creek movie-pack "Hollywood Comedy Legends". That indicates that it's probably p.d.

However, I seem to recall Video Cellar's talking about films that were kept out of the public domain by their music.
