If you're on a budget, you can get most of these, free.
http://www.xmedia-recode.de/ (Free - converts most video & audio formats - download page is in German, but program is in English).
http://www.virtualdub.org/ (Free - Tried and tested video editor - Saves as AVI - includes filters for 'everything'...from Brightness & Contrast to De-Interlacing, sharpness, Chroma, etc. and MUCH more.
http://www.goldwave.com/ (Trial version available, but WELL worth a Lifetime license ($49) - Load an AVI and edit the audio track, save as Mp3 and use VirtualDub to replace the original audio with edited version.
I have to admit, there's more comprehensive software available than these, but I've been using these since the late 80s, and have yet had any cause for complaint.
And they all run on XP, too.
Hope this helps. :-)
