An early-season snowfall accents the Rocky Mountains through western and central Colorado. This true-color image made from data collected by MODIS on October 26, 2001, highlights the contrast between various irrigated areas and the otherwise dry environment at the foothills of the Rockies. One such example is the city of Denver and its outlying suburbs, which can be seen best in the high-resolution image. In areas that would normally harbor drought-tolerant grasses, shrubs and trees, humans are...

In this MODIS image from December 3, 2001, winter sea ice can be seen forming in the shallow waters of the northern Caspian (left) and Aral (upper right) Seas. Despite the inflow of the Volga River (upper left), the northern portion of the Caspian Sea averages only 17 ft in depth, and responds to the region's continental climate, which is cold in winter and hot and dry in the summer. The southern part of the Sea is deeper and remains ice-free throughout the winter. The dirty appearance of the...

Temperate and green in the summer, the Kamchatka Peninsula in northeastern Russia freezes over completely in the winter. This true-color image of the Kamchatka Peninsula was acquired on December 12, 2001, by the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), flying aboard NASA's Terra spacecraft. The peninsula is surrounded by the Sea of Okhotsk to the west and by the Bering Sea to the east. The ice and snow highlight the stunning valleys and tall peaks of the Sredinnyy Khrebet, which is...

This MODIS true-color image, which was acquired from data collected on October 11, 2001, shows the Alps running through Southern Europe. Though some of the white areas on the mountains are due to early season snowfall, others are permanent snow packs. Such a pack is evident just west of Lake Geneva, which is the lake visible halfway up the left side of the image. The mountains act as a political border between quite a few European countries. Like many bodies of water throughout the world, including the North American Great Lakes, the Sea of Azov (right of center) has been facing problems related to eutrophication over the past decades. Eutrophication is the excessive influx of nutrients into waterways and wetlands most often caused by run-off polluted with fertilizers and other chemicals that spur the rapid growth of algae and plants, which die off and decompose, robbing oxygen from the water in the process. Often these blooms of...

As recently as July 23, 2002, Hurricane Douglas was a category 2 hurricane, with winds as high as 90 knots (over 100 miles per hour). As of July 24, Douglas had dropped back to category 1 status as it moved away from the Baja California Peninsula in the eastern Pacific Ocean. The storm is predicted to continue moving westward over the next 24 hours and should weaken as it moves over cooler waters. This image was acquired by the <a HREF="http://modis.gsfc.nasa.gov"...

These true- and false-color images of central Canada show the Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories (top) and Lake Athabasca to the southeast. Lake Athabasca straddles the border between Alberta (west) and Saskatchewan (east). A fire (red dot) is burning in Alberta, and the snow capped Rocky Mountains cut through southwest Alberta at bottom left. In the false-color image, vegetation is green, water is dark blue, and ice (or snow) is light blue. Sensor: Terra/MODIS. Data Start Date:...

The Irish Sea (right) is full of phytoplankton in this true-color image from January 15, 2002. The Irish Sea separates Ireland (center) from the United Kingdom (right). In this image the water of both the Irish and Celtic (lower right) Seas appears quite turbid, being a milky blue-green compared to the clearer waters of the open Atlantic (left). This milky appearance is likely due to the growth of marine plants called phytoplankton.Despite the fact that Ireland is at the same latitude as...

Sea ice is pulling back from the east coast of Greenland, and the numerous fjords that cut into the coastline are showing blue water through the ice that chokes them. Later in the summer, the ice will be gone for a brief time before the return of winter. Sensor: Terra/MODIS. Data Start Date: 6/13/02. Data End Date: 6/13/02.

This MODIS true-color image shows a number of fires (red dots) burning throughout Venezuela. Smoke plumes from some of the fires can be seen in the higher resolutions of the image. Also visible is the Atlantic Ocean, which appears silver because of sun-glint. This image was acquired April 9, 2002. Sensor: Terra/MODIS. Data Start Date: 4/9/02. Data End Date: 4/9/02.

Bushfires are still burning in northern Australia on May 29, 2002. In the coastal environment, large amounts of sediment, possibly churned up by tidal effects, fill the water. MODIS has been observing these fires since April. Sensor: Terra/MODIS. Data Start Date: 5/29/02. Data End Date: 5/29/02.

Numerous thermal anomalies were detected on the Kamchatka Peninsula in northeastern Russia in late June and early July by the <a HREF="http://modis.gsfc.nasa.gov" target="outlink">Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer</a> (MODIS). Some of the anomalies (red dots) were fires, but at least one was the result of ongoing volcanic activity at one of the Peninsula’s numerous active volcanoes. The erupting volcano, called Sheveluch, can be seen...

In the southern Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, a large fire sprang up in the Sequoia National Forest about 12 miles north of the town of Kernville. According to reports from the U.S.D.A Forest Service, the McNalley fire started on the afternoon of July 21, 2002, and by Monday, July 22, had spread to more than 9,000 acres. The fire, which spread rapidly in response to erratic winds, threatened hundreds of residences. This series of <a HREF="http://modis.gsfc.nasa.gov"...
