A series of powerful earthquakes over the weekend shook Niiagata Prefecture on Northwest Honshu, 260 km (160 miles) north of Tokyo. The first quake registered 6.5 on the Richter Scale, according to the National Earthquake Information Center, and occurred at 8:56 Universal Time, in the early evening local time as many residents were starting their dinners. At present, some 24 deaths have been attributed to the quake, or to the series of strong aftershocks, some above 6.0 in magnitude. Rescuers...

Although most of the United States enjoyed clear skies on April 19, 2006, North and South Dakota and sections of Montana and Wyoming were hammered with a late-spring snow storm. The storm dumped up to two feet (60 centimeters) of snow on the northwestern Plains, knocked out power in thousands of homes and businesses, and closed highways, reported the Associated Press. The storm was also blamed for four deaths, most of which occurred in a single accident on an ice-covered road. The Moderate...

Another dust storm swept across the Taklimakan Desert on March 19, 2006. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) flying onboard the Terra satellite took this picture the same day. In this image, pale beige dust obscures the view of the desert basin. Overlying the dust storm are white clouds. Clouds also fringe the basin to the northwest, southwest, and southeast.According to a news report in the Mail & Guardian Online in February 2006, China was starting to see positive...

Tropical Cyclone Emma formed as a low-intensity storm system and built to cyclone strength only briefly. But Emma’s brief cyclone status belied its size and rainfall. After weeks of activity, Merapi had appeared to be calming down when a new eruption forced fresh evacuations of nearby villages, according to news reports. On June 14, 2006, the volcano spewed a cloud of volcanic ash, covering a village several kilometers away. On June 16, news reports announced two casualties from Mount Merapi. Two men who had been assisting in the evacuation of a nearby village sought refuge in one of the emergency bunkers on the volcano’s slopes. The bunkers were designed...

Tropical Storm Aletta formed off the Pacific coast of southern Mexico on May 27, 2006, as a tropical depression. Over the next day, it gained a little strength until it reached tropical storm status, with sustained winds of around 62 kilometers per hour (39 miles per hour). Aletta never built much beyond this strength before slipping back below storm strength to be a tropical depression on May 30. Aletta stayed offshore, which often happens with cyclones that form in the Eastern Pacific....

The large volume of freshwater flowing into the Black Sea from large European rivers, including the Danube and Dnieper Rivers, makes the sea much less salty than open oceans. The freshwater flow also delivers many nutrients, which are washed into the sea from land. These nutrients support large blooms of phytoplankton: microscopic photosynthetic organisms (algae and bacteria). This image of the Black Sea on May 30, 2006, shows swirling blooms of phytoplankton coloring the surface waters blue...

Alhough spring dust storms are common in eastern China, 2006 surpassed the average year in the frequency and intensity of storms. On May 7, 2006, yet another dust storm swept across the North China Plain and veiled the Bo Hai from view. One reason the dust storms have been so frequent in 2006 is that drought has settled over northern China. Hebei Province and the Yellow River basin, both south of Beijing in the lower left corner of the image, received little rain between February and early May,...

Ubinas Volcano in Peru emitted a volcanic plume of ash and/or steam on June 24, 2006. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) flying onboard NASA’s Aqua satellite took this picture the same day. In this image, the volcano sends its plume eastward over this arid environment. Other features of the region include El Misti...

The dust storm that began on January 21, 2006, had abated somewhat the following day. The storm did, however, produce a slightly thicker cloud of dust over the Persian Gulf (lower right in the image). The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) flying onboard the...

A thick veil of smoke covered much of South America on September 14, 2004, as intense fires continued to burn in western Brazil, Paraguay, and Bolivia. Such widespread fires are not natural in the humid, tropical environment, and these were probably started to clear land for agriculture. As this image demonstrates, local agricultural fires can have a long reach. The smoke inhibits cloud formation and rainfall, which can impact a large area. In this case, the smoke is drifting northwest along...

The MODIS instrument flying aboard NASA's Terra satellite captured this true-color image of Typhoon Meari along the eastern China coast on September 27, 2004 at 02:55 UTC. At the time this image was taken, Meari had maximum sustained winds near 105 knots with gusts to 130 knots. Meari was expected to weaken slightly over the next 24 hours and make a gradual turn to the north. Sensor: Terra/MODIS.

Pale clouds of dust hover above the Bodele Depression in central North Africa near lake Chad on January 3, 2005. The lake appears to be little more than a small pool of open water surrounded by green vegetation that contrasts sharply with the surrounding arid terrain. The dust stretches southward into a region of transitional vegetation between the Sahara Desert to the north and the tropical savannas in the bottom of the image. This zone of transition is called the Sahel, and it is very...

Since June 2, 2005, Langila Volcano, in Papua New Guinea’s West New Britain province, has erupted continuously, according to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. The volcano has discharged unusually heavy loads of ash. Initially, winds carried the ash clouds northward over the ocean. Changing winds, however, have begun returning the ash to the island. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (<a...
