SeaWiFS recorded this bloom in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean on May 4, 2001. The brightest portion of the bloom is located about 2000 kilometers due east of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. SeaWiFS provided a cloud-free view of a large phytoplankton bloom in the Celtic Sea in this image captured on May 21, 2001. The brightness of the water suggests that this may be a coccolithophore bloom. The bloom, which looks a bit like a stylized "F" and "e" tipped over backwards, covers an area roughly 35,000 square kilometers (approximately 13,000 square miles). Sensor: OrbView-2/SeaWiFS. The fires in eastern Australia continued to send smoke seaward as can be seen in this SeaWiFS image of the area. The largest amount of smoke is coming from northern New South Wales, but a smoke plume is also visible just south of Sydney and Botany Bay, and a couple more are visible well inland in Queensland, blowing the other direction. A large area of ocean near the edge of the Patagonian Shelf was almost completely dark yesterday as can be seen in this SeaWiFS image. The responsible phytoplankton community must differ substantially -- either in species composition, total biomass, vertical distribution, or some combination of the three -- from those in the surrounding more brightly-colored waters. Satellites provide a view from space of changes on the Earth’s surface. This series of images from the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) aboard the Orbview-2 satellite shows the dramatic change in the color of Lake Michigan during the summer. The bright color that appears in late summer is probably caused by calcium carbonate—chalk—in the water. The year’s first Northeast Pacific hurricane, Aletta, appears in this image from the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS). On May 24, 2000 the hurricane was spinning 300 miles off the coast of Mexico with sustained winds of 80 miles per hour and gusts up to 100 miles per hour.For more information, see the <a HREF="http://seawifs.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEAWIFS.html" TARGET="outlink">SeaWiFS Project web site.</a>

These two SeaWiFS scenes of the area around Lake Balkhash in Kazakhstan were collected on the 18th and 27th of April, 2000. Note the general brightening of the southwestern portion of Lake Balkhash. This could be caused by an influx of sediment-laden spring melt water from the mountains to the southeast. You can see that the snow cover in those mountains has decreased during the time between the two passes. Also, Lake Sayram in northwestern China (lower right corner) went from being ice-covered...

On May 15, 2001, SeaWiFS captured this image showing what appears to be large quantities of dust blowing southward out of Iceland. The island is mostly hidden by clouds. Sea ice is visible along the Greenland coast northwest of Iceland. Sensor: OrbView-2/SeaWiFS. Data Start Date: 5/15/01.
