This course is a Persian(Farsi) basic-level language program developed by the Foreign Service Institute (FSI). The course has been used for over thirty years by United States government diplomats and officers for learning the Persian language. Other popular language programs (including Rosetta Stone and Pimsleur) rely heavily on the methods pioneered in this exclusive course. The course contains over 30 hours of educational audio with Student text (downloadable). The program is designed to help...

The 9-10 days old chick embryo can be injured and caused to die by the injection of 0.1-0.2 milliliters of an enterotoxin-containing culture filtrate in the allantoic cavity. The enterotoxin content of the filtrate pretreated in the usual way (heating at + 100C/30 minutes) is not high enough to kill all the embryos of a test series. Among 42 staphylococcus strains isolated from clinical infections or examinations of staff there were four enterotoxin- formers, of which three belonged to phage...

Measurements were made on a cylindrical, in directly heated Cs-vapor thermionic converter having a stainless steel collector spaced 1 mm from a 13.3 sq cm Th-W emitter. At an emitter temperature of 2100 K a power output of 4.4 w/sq cm (at 1.3 v) at a measured over-all efficiency of 8.5% was observed. At 2200 K, a power output of 8.8 w/sq cm at 11.9% efficiency was observed. Measurements of the cooling of the emitter due to electron emission indicate that in the retarding range of the converter...

On the basis of the general solution of the diffraction integral for a rectangular aperture in the presence of geometrical-optical aberrations, the effect of primary astigmatism upon the diffraction pattern intensity distribution is discussed. The diffraction pattern of a stationary ectangular aperture is described by means of a conveniently chosen Cartesian reference system. Two orthogonal aperture orientations are considered and it is shown that the intensity disribution depends on the...

Effect of multi-g accelerations on nucleate boiling ebullition

Pool boiling data has been obtained for potassium from the outside of a 7/8-in diameter bayonet tube. Boiling curves were determined at pressures up to 45 psia and burnout measurements were taken for pressures up to 20 psia. The burnout flux at 1 atm. was 610,000 Btu/(hr) (sq ft) and showed less pressure dependence than predicted by the relationships of Noyes, Zuber-Tribus, and Kutateladze. Operation of the film boiler has been delayed by leaks in the environmental chamber surrounding the...

A basic objective of the New Classification Techniques Task is to explore new test content through which the effectiveness of classification and assignment in the Army can be heightened. As a result of research conducted since 1949, including Korean combat studies, two new measures were developed and introduced into the Army Classification Battery on 1 October 1958. The new tests were incorporated in two new aptitude areas for classification to the combat arms, the Classification Inventory as a...

Out of 101 staphylococcus strains isolated from pus, healthy carriers, or from dust, 12 strains produced enterotoxin when tested in the chick embryo test of Kienitz and Preuner. Ten of these strains were phages of lysogenic group III. Lysogenic group I predominated among the staphylococci incapable of producing enterotoxin. Seven enterotoxic strains were isolated from healthy carriers and dust.

Alloys and diffusion couples of yttrium and scandium with the refractory elements Nb and Ta of Group V and Cr, Mo, and W of Group VI have been examined by means of the optical microscope, X-ray diffraction, and mass spectrometry. The results indicate that the solid solubility of Y and Sc in these elements is less than 1 part per million. This is in conformity with the Hume Rothery Rule that only a very restricted range of solid solution can be expected when the atomic diameter of solvent and...

The effects on intraperitoneal injection of decaborane have been investigated in monkeys with electrodes permanently implanted in the brain. One single injection of 5 mg/kg produced a marked behavioral depression, with only moderate electroencephalographic modifications, followed by death in 18 hours. Four daily doses of 3 mg/kg produced depression, somnolence, twitching in both arms, accompanied by bursts of high-voltage activity, localized in the internal capsule. Death occurred 3 days later....

A molecular-orbital approach provides insight into the nature of the occurrence of ferroelectricity and antiferroelectricity in perovskite type oxides. The formation of pi bonds, in addition to the sigma bonds in BaTiO3 structures and isomorphous compounds, leads to a strong mutual interaction along a chain. The absence or presence of pi bonding perpendicular to the axis of the strong interaction leads to chain alignments that are ferroelectric or antiferro electric, respectively. The role...

Tissues of the ear, nose and throat (both normal and pathologic) absorb fluorescein to differing degrees. A correlation has been discovered between visually observed luminescence upon examination of the ear, nose and throat and the amount of luminesceing dye in the tissues. Laboratory staining of pieces of tissue produces the same spectral characteristics as does intravital staining, which also permits studies of the secondary luminescence of tissues under laboratory conditions for the purpose...

This thesis is directed toward analyzing fundamental factors in accounting for control without being restricted to the conventional monetary accounting systems, and constructing mathematical models by which planning processes and control accounting processes are tied in together for better coordination of the two processes. The classification of accounting into ''accounting for planning'' and ''accounting for control'' is first discussed. The basic require ment of the former is to preserve...

An earlier theoretical study of radar reflection from a rough planetary surface is extended to include the case where the surface correlation function consists of two or more components. When both large- and small-scale structures are simultaneously present, it is found that the latter may completely dominate the autocorrelation function of the echo and thus render the former undetectable by c-w methods. An additional finding is that the large-scale structure may be detectable in the angular...

Research was continued on a program to determine the feasibility of enhancing the performance of the cesium vapor thermionic converter by photon processes. Two experimental converters designed specifically to keep the absorption path to a minimum were completed. Five radiation sources were tested with the converters. A syntax-oriented compiler for languages with a context-free syntax expressed in Backus Normal Form is discussed. The technique discussed is applicable to an iterated compilation process, where each phase of the compilation generates the rules of syntax required for the next phase of the compilation. Complete flow charts are included for the major processors; these flow charts are essentially machine-independent. Also included is a discussion of the extensions required which allow the...
