The Bass trace conjectures are placed in the setting of homotopy idempotent selfmaps of manifolds. For the strong conjecture, this is achieved via a formulation of Geoghegan. The weaker form of the conjecture is reformulated as a comparison of ordinary and L^2-Lefschetz numbers.

We study a model of spontaneous wavefunction collapse for a free quantum particle. We analyze in detail the time evolution of the single-Gaussian solution and the double-Gaussian solution, showing how the reduction mechanism induces the localization of the wavefunction in space; we also study the asymptotic behavior of the general solution. With an appropriate choice for the parameter $\lambda$ which sets the strength of the collapse mechanism, we prove that: i) the effects of the reducing...

We calculate the equation of state in 2+1 flavor QCD at finite temperature with physical strange quark mass and almost physical light quark masses using lattices with temporal extent Nt=8. Calculations have been performed with two different improved staggered fermion actions, the asqtad and p4 actions. Overall, we find good agreement between results obtained with these two O(a^2) improved staggered fermion discretization schemes. A comparison with earlier calculations on coarser lattices is...

In this paper we analyze the double Caldeira-Leggett model: the path integral approach to two interacting dissipative harmonic oscillators. Assuming a general form of the interaction between the oscillators, we consider two different situations: i) when each oscillator is coupled to its own reservoir, and ii) when both oscillators are coupled to a common reservoir. After deriving and solving the master equation for each case, we analyze the decoherence process of particular entanglements in the...

The diffusive behavior of a harmonic oscillator driven by a Mittag-Leffler noise is studied. Using Laplace analysis we derive exact expressions for the relaxation functions of the particle in terms of generalized Mittag-Leffler functions and its derivatives from a generalized Langevin equation. Our results show that the oscillator displays an anomalous diffusive behavior. In the strictly asymptotic limit, the dynamics of the harmonic oscillator corresponds to an oscillator driven by a noise...

We use the Mellin-Barnes representation in order to improve the theoretical estimate of mass corrections to the width of light pseudoscalar meson decays into a lepton pair, $P\to l^{+}l^{-}$ . The full resummation of the terms $(M^{2}/\Lambda^{2}) ^{n},$ $(m^{2}/M^{2}) ^{n}$and $(m^{2}/\Lambda^{2}) ^{n}$ to the decay amplitude is performed, where $m$ is the lepton mass, $M$ is the meson mass and $\Lambda\approx m_{\rho}$ is the characteristic scale of the $P\to \gamma^{\ast}\gamma^{\ast}$ form...

While synthesizing the single crystals of novel materials is not always feasible, orienting the layered polycrystals becomes an attractive method in the studies of angular dependencies of inelastic scattering of x-rays or neutrons. Putting in use the Rietveld analysis of layered structures in novel manganites and cuprates we develop the studies of their anisotropic properties with oriented powders instead of single crystals. Densities of phonon states (DOS) and atomic thermal displacememts...

The gyrocenter phase-space transformation used to describe nonlinear gyrokinetic theory is rediscovered by a recursive solution of the Hamiltonian dynamics associated with the perturbed guiding-center Vlasov operator. The present work clarifies the relation between the derivation of the gyrocenter phase-space coordinates by the guiding-center recursive Vlasov method and the method of Lie-transform phase-space transformations.

Making use of public spectra from Cimatti et al (2008), we measure for the first time the velocity dispersion of spheroid-like massive (M_star ~ 10^11 M_sun) galaxies at z ~ 1.6. By comparing with galaxies of similar stellar mass at lower redshifts, we find evidence for a mild evolution in velocity dispersion, decreasing from ~240 km/s at z ~ 1.6 down to ~180 km/s at z ~ 0. Such mild evolution contrasts with the strong change in size (a factor of ~4) found for these type of objects in the same...

We propose a scheme enabling the universal coupling of angular momentum of $N$ remote noninteracting qubits using linear optical tools only. Our system consists of $N$ single-photon emitters in a $\Lambda$-configuration that are entangled among their long-lived ground-state qubits through suitably designed measurements of the emitted photons. In this manner, we present an experimentally feasible algorithm that is able to generate any of the $2^N$ symmetric and nonsymmetric total angular...

We present 0.3 arcsec resolution observations of the disk around GM Aurigae with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) at a wavelength of 860 um and with the Plateau de Bure Interferometer at a wavelength of 1.3 mm. These observations probe the distribution of disk material on spatial scales commensurate with the size of the inner hole predicted by models of the spectral energy distribution. The data clearly indicate a sharp decrease in millimeter optical depth at the disk center, consistent with a...

Using gamma-ray data collected by the Astrorivelatore Gamma ad Immagini LEggero (AGILE) satellite over a period of almost one year (from 2007 July to 2008 June), we searched for pulsed signals from 35 potentially interesting radio pulsars, ordered according to $F_{\gamma}\propto \sqrt{\dot{E}} d^{-2}$ and for which contemporary or recent radio data were available. AGILE detected three new top-ranking nearby and Vela-like pulsars with good confidence both through timing and spatial analysis....

Pulsar Timing Arrays (PTAs) currently provide the only means to observe gravitational radiation from massive black hole binary systems with masses >10^7 solar masses. The whole cosmic population produces a stochastic background that could be...

The Koras-Russell threefold is the hypersurface X of the complex affine four-space defined by the equation x^2y+z^2+t^3+x=0. It is well-known that X is smooth contractible and rational but that it is not algebraically isomorphic to affine three-space. The main result of this article is to show that there exists another hypersurface Y of the affine four-space, which is isomorphic to X as an abstract variety, but such that there exists no algebraic automorphism of the ambient space which...

Consider a random walk in a uniformly elliptic i.i.d. random environment in dimensions $d\ge 2$. In 2002, Sznitman introduced for each $\gamma\in (0,1)$ the ballisticity conditions $(T)_\gamma$ and $(T'),$ the latter being defined as the fulfilment of $(T)_\gamma$ for all $\gamma\in (0,1).$ He proved that $(T')$ implies ballisticity and that for each $\gamma\in (0.5,1),$ $(T)_\gamma$ is equivalent to $(T')$. It is conjectured that this equivalence holds for all $\gamma\in (0,1).$ Here we prove...

To facilitate the study of the unparticle scenario it is very desirable to have a treatable model realizing it in four dimensions. Motivated by the general idea of the AdS/CFT correspondence, we consider a simple construction: the Randall-Sundrum 2 (single brane) setup with the Standard Model fields on the brane and a massive vector field in the warped bulk. We show that in this model the known properties of vector unparticles -- the nontrivial phase of the CFT propagator, the necessity and...

Recently J.C. Rohde constructed families of Calabi-Yau threefolds parametrised by Shimura varieties. The points corresponding to threefolds with CM are dense in the Shimura variety and, moreover, the families do not have boundary points with maximal unipotent monodromy. Both aspects are of interest for Mirror Symmetry. In this paper we discuss one of Rohde's examples in detail and we explicitly give the Picard-Fuchs equation for this one dimensional family.

Over the last years the Tevatron Run-II has extended several limits on Higgs boson masses and coupling which were pioneered during the LEP accelerator operation between 1989 and 2000. Higgs boson searches will also be at the forefront of research at the LHC. This review concisely discusses the experimental constraints set by the CDF and D0 collaborations in winter 2008/2009 at the beginning of the LHC era. When we lower the temperature of a liquid, at some point we meet a first order phase transition to the crystal. Yet, under certain conditions it is possible to keep the system in its metastable phase and to avoid crystallization. In this way the liquid enters in the supercooled phase. Supercooled liquids have a very rich phenomenology, which is still far from being completely understood. To begin with, there is the problem of how to prevent crystallization and how deeply the liquid can be...

With the prospect of measuring the fraction of arriving secondary photons, produced through photo-pion energy loss interactions of ultra high energy cosmic ray (UHECR) protons with the microwave background during propagation, we investigate how information about the local UHECR source distribution can be inferred from the primary (proton) to secondary (photon) ratio. As an aid to achieve this, we develop an analytic description for both particle populations as a function of propagation time....
