A new aromatic diamine, bis(4-(3-aminophenoxy)phenyl) sulfone (BAPS- 4,3) was prepared by hydrolysis of the precursor, bis(4-(3-acetamidophenoxy) phenyl) sulfone, whereas attempts to prepare the nitro-precursor of BAPS-4,3 from the chlorophenyl sulfone and sodium nitrophenoxide were unsuccessful. 4- Aminophthalonitrile was prepared in high purity by the catalytic reduction of 4- nitrophthalonitrile. A number of epoxide-terminated oligomeric aromatic polyimides (BTEP) series) were synthesized by...

The problem P of maximizing the expected discounted reward earned in a continuous time Markov decision process with countable state and finite action space is considered. (The reward rate is merely bounded by a polynomial). By examining a sequence P sub N of approximating problems, each of which is a semi-Markov decision process with exponential transition rate Lambda sub N, Lambda sub N nears infinity, the author is able to show that P is obtained as the limit of the P sub N. The value in...

An upper bound is established for the magnitude of the truncation error incurred when a real-valued, finite energy signal which is band-limited to -pi(r) or = omega or = pi(r) (o r1) is approximated by 2N+1 terms from its Shannon sampling series expansion. The sampling expansion is associated with the band (-pi, pi), and consequently involves samples taken at the integer points. The bound is of the form K(r,t)/N (Square root of E) where E is the signal energy. This bound is of the same...

With the advent of numerical analysis adapted to a large computer system, global automated analysis of a variety of meteorological parameters became operational at the Air Force Global Weather Central (AFGWC). At the USAF Environmental Technical Applications Center (USAFETAC), these gridded analyses are maintained as one of the historical data sets used by USAFETAC to support a wide variety of data application requests. The gridded analyses now used at USAFETAC are in two distinct forms and...

After faculty collective bargaining elections were held in the 14-campus Pennsylvania State College system and Temple University, questionnaires were administered to a sample of faculty. The objectives of the research were to identify relationships between the independent variable of faculty voting behavior in these elections and the following dependent variables: demographic characteristics, attitudes about competing associations, the extent to which internal versus external governance matters...

When analysis of variance is used, statistically significant differences may or may not be of practical significance to educators. A large part of the problem is due to the fact that a "zero difference" null hypothesis can always be rejected statistically if the sample size is large enough. If, however, a method based on the noncentral F distribution is used, trivial differences cannot attain statistical significance. The (non-zero) null hypothesis is now rejected at the alpha level...

Based on data provided by the City University of New York (CUNY) University Application Processing Center, this report compares applicants to CUNY for admission in fall 1972 who were accepted and then enrolled with those who were accepted but did not enroll. Of the applicants who were accepted as fulltime, day-session freshmen matriculants, more than half (56% or 32,111 students) enrolled at the college to which they were allocated. Summary conclusions include: (1) Applicants were more likely...

This paper attempts to study the local politics of compensatory education. It addresses the question of why some neighborhoods appeared to be more politically influential than others over the distribution of compensatory education funds in a large urban school district. Data for this study was gathered from 100 schools and neighborhoods of the Los Angeles Unified School District. A neighborhood was defined as a political unit corresponding to the attendance area of each school. Political...

The debate to define career education began and the nature of the concept slowly began to emerge after career education was brought to center stage by Dr. Sidney P. Marland in 1971. Career education is moving toward a focus on the working role that individuals play and is concerned with helping each individual identify, enter, and progress in a field of work that will provide maximum benefits to him, to his family, and to society. Of the several early efforts to produce a comprehensive set of...

Current and projected manpower shortages within the field of mental health suggest a greater role for paraprofessionals. But, without careful evaluation and precise training, added manpower will not solve any of the problems facing psychology in overcoming the limits to the delivery of services. These two papers review several attempts to evaluate the effects of an existing paraprofessional training package on several specific behaviors of the volunteers. The initial training procedure was used...

The resulting teacher perceptions of their working/teaching environment were discussed in terms of the organizational development...

To the question of whether Chomsky's hypothesized Language Acquisition Device (LAD) in young children is an adequate and feasible model of language acquisition, this paper answers that LAD should be reformulated so as to include semantics; that "informant presentation" rather than "text presentation" is responsible for language acquisition; and that nonlinguistic knowledge may be crucial in syntax acquisition. The first argument is supported by experiments which show that...

Flight test data have been used to extract the lateral static and dynamic aerodynamic parameters of the Kestrel aircraft. The aircraft configurations included thrust-jet angles of 0 deg, 15 deg, and 30 deg, and the test Mach numbers were 0.43, 0.62, and 0.82. The results showed that most of the parameters varied linearly with trim normal-force coefficient. The directional stability parameter showed a small increase with increasing trim normal-force coefficient and also with nozzle deflection....

The research discusses a program which aids the user of an automatic programming system (APS) in the debugging of his model of his problem situation. The problem domain considered in the thesis is that of business games (i.e., the management simulation games which are used as a learning tool in the study of management). A language for describing models of these games is presented. The paper then describes the program's methods of simulating and finding bugs in models written in this language....

Educational researchers have neglected the need to involve public interest and support of educational research. Researchers must begin to deal with the real problems of education if they are to receive public support. This responsibility would include need assessment, information search, model building, research based on theory, and evaluation of these real problems. This activity should take place on all levels, from the local to the national. (Author/SM)

In October 1973, representatives of six groups of Tennesseans reflecting professional and lay opinion about education were asked to identify what they considered to be the most critical current issues in Tennessee education. The most frequently mentioned responses in this initial phase of the survey were used to construct a listing of 10 key issues, which listing was printed on a business reply card along with instructions for ranking the issues in order of importance. In a second phase, the...

The development of Arctic Canada's resources has historically been guided by two contrasting administrative approaches: one favoring the free play of profit motives in a laissez-faire market economy and the other the coordination of development through formalized government planning. In both approaches, Eurocanadians are the dominant figures, while Eskimos are depressed and subservient. Against this background, a third approach to development is emerging--the Arctic cooperative movement. This...
