Described are the advantages of using the metric system over the English system. The most common units of both systems are listed and compared. Pictures are used to exhibit use of the metric system in connection with giving prices or sizes of common items. Several examples provide computations of area, total weight of several objects, and volume; computations are carried out in both systems. A large part of the booklet is printed in the style of posters. (SD)

Formal measuring devices used to ascertain the training success and promotion potential of maintenance personnel have been deficient in the area of job realism. In part, this may be due to reliance on paper and pencil testing rather than the use of effective job performance measurements. Data concerning job performance measurements applicable to Air Force electronic maintenance were collected, structured, and analyzed. As a result of this analysis, it was recommended that comprehensive...

Much of the criticism of higher education involves demands for greater efficiency. In certain areas, such critiques are valid; in others, they are misguided. Often the criteria and measurements used are misleading. In presenting the perspective of a large university, three erroneous means of increasing efficiency are highlighted, including: (1) the use of overly simplistic measures of efficiency; (2) short-run responses to each fluctuation in program enrollment; and (3) insistence on...

Simplified curve fits for the thermodynamic properties of equilibrium air were devised for use in either the time-dependent or shock-capturing computational methods. For the time-dependent method, curve fits were developed for p = p(e, rho), a = a(e, rho), and T = T(e, rho). For the shock-capturing method, curve fits were developed for h = h(p, rho) and T = T(p, rho). The ranges of validity for these curves fits were for temperatures up to 25,000 K and densities from 10 to the minus 7th power...

The operational lifetime of liquid crystal displays were investigated. Electrochemical reaction at the electrodes of the display can cause failure after 2000 to 3000 hours of operation. Studies using cyclic voltametry of electrochemical reactions of N (p-methoxybenzilidene p-butylaniline (MBBA), a nematic liquid crystal were made. These studies indicate the presence of a reversible reduction of MBBA at the cathode, and that the reduction product undergoes a further reaction leading to products...

Tungsten-hafnium-carbon - superalloy composites were found to be potentially useful for turbine blade applications on the basis of stress-rupture strength. The 100- and 1000-hr rupture strengths calculated for 70 vol. % fiber composites based on test data at 1090C (2000F) were 420 and 280 MN/m2 (61,000 and 41,000 psi, respectively). The investigation indicated that, with better quality fibers, composites having 100- and 1000-hr rupture strengths of 570 and 370 MN/m2 (82,000 and 54,000 psi,...

A series of tests was conducted with a Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) wheel operating at yaw angles ranging from -5 to +90 deg. The load was varied from 42 to 82 lb (187 to 365 N), and the speed was varied from 3.5 to 10.0 ft/sec (1.07 to 3.05 m/sec). It was noted that speed had an effect on side thrust and rut depth. Side thrust, rut depth, and skid generally increased as the yaw angle increased. For the range of loads used, the effect of load on performance was not significant.

A method has been developed by which fast switching devices can be derived which have a high current carrying capability and are radiation hard. These devices are based on a junction between a conducting substrate and an oxide which can undergo a semiconductor-to-metallic transition. Example: NbO (metal)/NbO2 (semiconductor to metallic transiTiOn at 807 C) or TIO (metal)/ Ti3O5 (semiconductor to metallic transition at 135 C). VO/VO2 was also tried and it does work. However the off resistance is...

High quality microwave images of realistic objects in damp soil were formed, and correlated to the structure of the objects using the monostatic measurement technique. Moreover, they compared very well with other images made in dry smooth soil. Effect of polarization and changes in frequency on the microwave image was investigated. A new way of displaying the scanned data was introduced to facilitate detection of buried objects.

After a study of the history of the Reserve forces of the United States it was found that the citizen soldier has been the backbone of this country's national defense since before it became a sovereign nation. Most of the time the militia has performed with distinction; but there have been times, because of a lack of unity of command, when its performance lacked the elements of a well disciplined and effective force. Then after a study of the national laws and Army Regulations governing the...

A correlogram is the two-dimensional autocorrelation of the image of an object illuminated with non-coherent radiation. A laser correlogram is obtained from the power spectrum of the irradiance pattern scattered from the object when illuminated with sufficiently coherent radiation. The resolution of this signature is dictated by the size of the receiving aperture, with relatively minor degradation by atmospheric turbulence. This report collects in one place information which has been available...

Although a lot of data on the psychological characteristics of children having learning disabilities have been gathered, not very much has been done to discover the underlying mechanisms, processes, or phenomenon of learning disability. Without more investigations which attempt to get at these, we will continue to be at a loss to prescribe effective methods for improving the health, education, employment opportunity, and social health of these children. A homomorphic psychometric model has been...

In preparation for a study of using interactive computer graphics for training, some current theorizing about internal and external, digital and analog representational systems are reviewed. The possibility is considered that there are two, overlapping, internal, analog representational systems, one for organismic states and the other for external world dimensionalities and objects. The concept of a working memory, or "mind's eye", and its importance in learning is described along...

An external degree is one that may be earned outside the central structure of a college or university. The most common form of external degree program is the evening college in which students, who are usually working adults, meet the standard requirements for a four-year degree by taking a part-time program after work. No allowances are made in evening college programs for what adult students may have learned outside the classroom, even though this learning may be equivalent to what they are...

Various issues involved in the redefinition of black people, especially as it concerns their education, are addressed in this paper. The cultural context is especially pertinent, as it forces black educators to be explicit about the issue of a distinctive black subculture. Other issues addressed include the following: the society's and in particular, the public school's failure to prepare the majority of black people for the complex, technological society of the present or future, the concept...
