The Law Enforcement Assistance Administration (LEAA) is sponsoring a program to develop an inconspicuous, lightweight body armor that will provide protection from standard handgun threats. A high-speed projectile that impacts but does not penetrate flexible armor material transmits large amounts of energy to the underlying tissues. The goal of this study was to determine the hazards resulting from impacts with the .38-caliber, 158-grain bullet, at approximately 800 feet per second. The missiles...

The dam is located in the southeastern portion of Iron County, Missouri. The dam forms an industrial water supply lake. The inspection team observed no conditions at the dam which require immediate remedial action. The erosion protection on the upstream slope appears adequate for this dam and the few small trees in the emergency spillway outlet channel are considered a minor deficiency which should be corrected.

Experiments on adiabatic expansions of SF6 in an argon carrier gas reveal that is readily nucleates and grows in the small free jets and Laval nozzles used as molecular beam sources. One free jet orifice and one nozzle of approximately the same throat size were used in this work. Limits for the onset of clustering leading to intense 'molecular' beams have been determined by varying the intial pressure, initial temperature, SF6 mole fraction and gas expansion (and cooling) rate. As anticipated,...

The application of the electrochemical compatibility test method to metals exposed to nitrogen tetroxide (N2O4) is described. It was determined that N N2O4 is not sufficiently conductive to permit electrochemical measurements to be carried out. It was necessary to add water in the concentration range of ten to eleven value percent in order to obtain compatibility data. This concentration corresponds to the high density acid phase of the N2O4 - H2O system. Above one to two value percent water a...

This report consists of a comparative analysis of reported Maintenance Manhours per Flight Hour (MMH/FH) for a group of five (5) developmental Army helicopter systems expected to be operational in the mid-1980's time period. The study was initiated as a result of the wide disparity found among the various aircraft programs in the way MMH/FH data is obtained as well as how it is processed and displayed. There is a need for uniformity, consistency and validity in the aircraft MMH/FH projections,...

This volume contains the manuscripts of research lectures by the eleven fellows of the summer program. Five of the lectures overlap significantly with the central summer theme of geomagnetism. The other six lectures cover a broad range of current G.F.D. topics from collective instability to strange attractors. Several of these research efforts are quite polished and probably will appear in journals soon. The middle half represent reports of sound progress on studies of thesis calibre. But then,...

During September 1976, Kansas AAP developed a Demonstration Test Plan (DTP) to govern the prove-out test for Project 5745509, 155 mm M483A1 Automated Assembly and Pack-Out System at KAAP. An initial prove-out was begun in November 1976 and completed in March 1977. The results of this prove-out indicated that the equipment in its configuration at the time would not meet established requrements. During the next eight months, a series of improvements were made to both the body-loading and fuze...

A user in a protection system that aids in the transfer of authority within the system is called a conspirator. (The term is not to connote wrong-doing necessarily, since legitimate sharing requires 'conspiracy' in this sense.) Using the Take-Grant Protection Model as an abstraction for a capability-based protection system, necessary and sufficient conditions are developed for determining the number of conspirators required to transfer authority for a given system. The conditions are shown to...

The whole-body absorption of electromagnetic waves by biological bodies is strongly dependent on the orientation of the electric field (E) relative to the longest dimension (L) of the body. The highest rate of energy deposition occurs for E parallel L orientation for frequencies (65-70 MHz for an adult human being) such that the major length is approximately 0.36 to 0.4 times the free-space wavelength. Peaks of whole-body absorption for the other two configurations (major length oriented along...

In this paper, we consider deterministic models for a stochastic linear program with a constant feasible region and stochastic cost coefficients having multi-variate normal distribution. Relationships among the solutions of these models are examined and it is shown that solving a parametric quadratic program associated with Markowitz's mean-variance model yields solutions to all other models considered for all relevant values of parameters. The general condition of the dam is good. The dam's spillway will not pass the required test flood. The wet area found at the toe downstream should be examined when there is no flow through the spillway to determine if it is resulting from seepage through the dam or from water through the rock slope from the...

A turbojet blade vibration data acquisition system was designed to allow the measurement of blade vibration. The data acquisition system utilizing 96 microprocessors to gather data from optical probes, store, sort and transmit to the central computer is described. Areas of high technical risk were identified and a two-microprocessor system was breadboarded and tested to investigate these areas. Results show that the system was feasible and that low technical risk would be involved in proceeding...
