Research related to the multiple choice test item is reported, as it is conducted by educational technologists in Japan. Sato's number of hypothetical equivalent alternatives is introduced. The based idea behind this index is that the expected uncertainty of the m events, or alternatives, be large and the number of hypothetical, equivalent alternatives be close to m. A new index, K*, is proposed as a modification of m; it is a means of invalidating the three-parameter logistic model for the...

The performance of biphase direct-sequence spread-spectrum multiple-access (SSMA) communication for a general class of fading channels is investigated. The channels considered are those for which the channel output consists of a strong stable specular signal plus a faded version of this signal. Such channels are the result of a transmission medium which gives rise to a major stable communication path and a number of additional weaker communication paths. The fading channel is modeled as a...

An interim report of the status of our study on the effects of high-intensity, low frequency noise is presented. A method has been implemented in which Discrete Fourier Transforms are computed from samples of two analogue waveforms. One source represents input to a system, the other represents the system output. The input spectrum, output spectrum and cross-spectrum are computed. The transfer function is calculated by dividing the averaged cross-spectrum by the averaged input spectrum....

A tail mounted spin recovery parachute system was designed and developed by the NASA Langley Research Center for use on light general aviation airplanes. The system was designed for use on typical airplane configurations, including low wing, single engine, and twin-engine design. A mechanically triggered pyrotechnic slug gun is used to forcibly deploy a pilot parachute which extracts a bag that deploys a ring slot spin recovery parachute. The total system weighs 8.2 kg (18 lb). System design...

Two second-order-closure turbulence models were devised that are suitable for predicting properties of complex turbulent flow fields in both incompressible and compressible fluids. One model is of the "two-equation" variety in which closure is accomplished by introducing an eddy viscosity which depends on both a turbulent mixing energy and a dissipation rate per unit energy, that is, a specific dissipation rate. The other model is a "Reynolds stress equation" (RSE)...

In an attempt to reduce fouling while retaining the beneficial effects of alkaline earth inhibitors on the hot corrosion of superalloys, the use of both additives and the intermittent application of the inhibitors were evaluated. Additions of alkaline earth compounds to combustion gases containing sodium sulfate were shown to inhibit hot corrosion. However, sulfate deposits can lead to turbine fouling in service. For that reason, dual additives and intermittant inhibitor applications were...

A passive system proposed for increasing the flutter speed of a wing with heavy concentrated weights involves the concept of mounting the store on a pitch pivot having a very low pitch stiffness relative to the wing stiffness. This concept was investigated utilizing a two dimensional approach involving 4 degrees of freedom, namely, wing bending, wing torsion, store pitch and store vertical translation. This preliminary analysis was very encouraging and the results demonstrate that, if the...

Laboratory and field studies were conducted to determine the basis for increased sensitivity of people to noise during aircraft noise studies. This change in sensitivity could be attributed to either a physiological time-of-day effect (i.e., a circadian rhythm) or simply to the total number of aircraft noise events experienced during a laboratory test period. In order to investigate the time-of-day factor, noise sensitivity measures were obtained from subjects at home with cassette tape...

An analysis and computer program which optimizes laser turret geometry to obtain minimum phase distortion is described. Phase distortion due to compressible, inviscid flow over small perturbation laser turrets in subsonic or supersonic flow is calculated. The turret shape is determined by a two dimensional Fourier series; in a similar manner, the flow properties are given by a Fourier series. Phase distortion is calcualted for propagation at serveral combinations of elevation and azimuth...

An experiment in which visible wavelength lasers traversed a well-documented two dimensional jet was conducted. Temperature perturbations varied from 0.25 to 1.80 K and velocity fluctuations ranged from 9.2 to 30.8 m/sec. Measured central spot intensities were as low as 18% of the undisturbed beam, depending on jet Mach number, beam position theory and experiment was two percent in terms of far field intensity. To supplement the flow field information, a laser Doppler velocimeter was developed...

A simplified mathematical model was developed which predicts the optical propagation losses which occur when an optical beam of given wave length passes through a turbulent boundary layer or shear layer. The optical losses are predicted in terms of line spread function (or Strehl ratio) and modulation transfer function by using experimentally determined values of layer thickness, streamwise, lateral and beamwise density fluctuation length scales, and distribution of the standard deviation of...

The effects of the airborne environment on a pointing and tracking system using a turret external to an aircraft are summarized. The data covered a series of flight tests and a span of seven years. The two major airborne effects were shown to be direct pressure loading of optical elements and vibrations of the entire turret. The direct optical loading problem was minimized by fence designs for the turret.

Observations of the late type M supergiant TV Gem (M1Iab) reveal strong UV continuum between 1200 A and 3200 A. The continuum is essentially featureless with the exception of a number of broad absorption features in the short wavelength spectra range. An absorption feature centered around 1400 A could be due to Si IV absorption found typically in spectra of middle B type stars. UV emission from this star is unexpected because earlier ground-based observations give no indication of a possible...
