The large discrepancy recently observed between $B \ra J/\Psi + K (K^*)$ data and commonly used hadronic form factor models might be due to a breakdown of the factorization assumption. By showing that the $B \ra \eta_c + K (K^*)$ rates can be calculated without relying on any form factor model, we propose a test of the factorization hypothesis. This test is free of possible uncertainties caused by final state interactions and $W$-exchange graph contributions. If factorization holds, the...

Debye screening of static chromoelectric fields at high temperature is investigated at next-to-leading order through one-loop resummed perturbation theory. At this order the gluon propagator appears to give rise to strong deviations from a Yukawa form of screening. Generally, an oscillatory behavior is found which asymptotically becomes repulsive, but in a gauge-dependent manner. However, these features are strongly sensitive to the existence of screening of static magnetic fields. It is shown...

We study the regularity of solutions of functional equations of a generalized mean value type. In this paper we give sufficient conditions for the regularity by using hypoellipticity which is a concept of the theory of partial differential equations. Further we also give an affirmative answer to a conjecture of H.\'Swiatak. A part of the results was announced in the comprehensive paper [8] on series of our joint works. To prove the regularity of solutions of functional equation is in general...

We consider the Derrida-Higgs (DH) statistical model of species formation in the case where the population is geographically distributed in discrete locations, and mating only takes place within one location. Keeping the rate of migration between neighbouring locations at a fixed value, we change the mutation rate, changing therefore the average overlap between genotypes. When the overlap between individuals living in different locations falls below a fecundity threshold, speciation occurs....

A longitudinal study was conducted at William Rainey Harper College (Illinois) to observe the performance and achievement of all credit students entering the college from fall 1983 through fall 1993. Study findings included the following: (1) 77% of full-time students returned to school at a later date for 1 year or more; (2) the 77% retention rate held true for all races, genders, and program categories, other than Blacks, Hispanics, and older students; (3) the part-time student persistence...

Computing marginal probabilities (whether prior or posterior) in Bayesian belief networks is a hard problem. This paper discusses deterministic approximation schemes that work by adding up the probability mass in a small number of value assignments to the network variables. Under certain assumptions, the probability mass in the union of these assignments is sufficient to obtain a good approximation. Such methods are especially useful for highly-connected networks, where the maximum clique size...

A high-strength aluminum alloy, 7075-T6, was studied to quantitatively evaluate chemical pitting effects of its corrosion fatigue life. The study focused on pit nucleation, pit growth, and fatigue crack nucleation. Pitting corrosion fatigue experiments were conducted in 3.5 percent NaCl aqueous solution under constant amplitude sinusoidal loading at two frequencies, 5 and 20 Hz. Smooth and unnotched specimens were used in this investigation. A video recording system was developed to allow in...

We present an ab initio pseudopotential local density functional calculation for stoichiometric high-Tc cuprate YBa_2Cu_3O_7 using the plane-wave basis set. We have overcome well-known difficulties in applying pseudopotential methods to first-row elements, transition metals, and rare-earth materials by carefully generating norm-conserving pseudopotentials with excellent transferability and employing an extremely efficient iterative diagonalization scheme optimized for our purpose. The application of multiscale and stochastic techniques to the solution of a linearized inverse scattering problem is presented. This approach allows for the explicit and easy handling of many difficulties associated with problems of this type. Regularization is accomplished via the use of a multiscale prior stochastic model which offers considerable flexibility for the incorporation of prior knowledge and constraints. We use the relative error covariance matrix (RECM), introduced in [20], as a...

Title II of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, reauthorized under the Hawkins Stafford Amendments, provides federal funds for the improvement of mathematics and science teaching at all levels of elementary and secondary education, targeting improvement of teacher skills, instructional quality, and student access to instruction. In 1993-94 the Austin Independent School District (AISD) (Texas) received $206,662 from Title II funds, plus carryover for a total of $344,795. A total of 1,034...

In fall 1993, the Austin (Texas) Independent School District (AISD) contracted with two community-based organizations to serve eligible AISD dropouts during the 1993-94 school year. The American Institute for Learning and Middle Earth Unlimited, Inc. provided services through the Creative Rapid Learning Center (CRLC) and the 78702 RAYS program, respectively. The CRLC program served 216 youths and the RAYS program served 59. At best, the dropout recovery program reduced the district's annual...

When people think about "correctional education," they typically think about only the kind that is aimed at inmates, forgetting that the teachers need educating too; and that line officers and department of corrections commissioners and sheriff's deputies need career-long training too; and the general public, which tends to be more than a little knee-jerk on these issues, needs enlightening too. Education works--not only for the general public but for people in prisons and jails too....

This guide, in Spanish, notes the value of parent groups for parents of children with disabilities, as they offer parents a place and a means to share information, give and receive emotional support, and work as a team to address common concerns. Typical activities of a parent group are listed, and ways of identifying parent groups that exist nationally and locally are noted. Criteria are outlined for deciding which group or groups would be useful to join, and suggestions are offered for...

We describe techniques that simplify the calculation of one-loop QCD amplitudes with many external legs, which are needed for next-to-leading-order (NLO) corrections to multi-jet processes. The constraints imposed by perturbative unitarity, collinear singularities and a supersymmetry-inspired organization of helicity amplitudes are particularly useful. Certain sequences of one-loop helicity amplitudes may be obtained for an arbitrary number of external gluons using these techniques. We also...

We discuss a realization of the bosonic string as a noncritical $W_3$-string. The relevant noncritical $W_3$-string is characterized by a Liouville sector which is restricted to a (non-unitary) $(3,2)$ $W_3$ minimal model with central charge contribution $c_l = - 2$. Furthermore, the matter sector of this $W_3$-string contains $26$ free scalars which realize a critical bosonic string. The BRST operator for this $W_3$-string can be written as the sum of two, mutually anticommuting, nilpotent...

To obtain improved parton densities of the proton, we present a new global analysis of deep-inelastic and related hard scattering data including, in particular, the recent measurements of F2 at HERA, of the asymmetry of the rapidity distributions of W+- production at the FNAL pbar p collider and of the asymmetry in Drell-Yan production in pp and pn collisions. We discuss the evolution of the new partons to low values of Q2.
