Within the Nambu--Jona--Lasinio model strange degrees of freedom are incorporated into the soliton picture using the collective approach of Yabu and Ando. The form factors of the nucleon associated with the nonet vector current are extracted. The numerical results provide limits for the strange magnetic moment: $-0.05\le\mu_s\le0.25$. For the strange magnetic form factor of the nucleon the valence quark and vacuum contributions add coherently while there are significant cancellations for the...

The Schwinger-Dyson equations of the Makeenko-Migdal type, when supplemented with some simple equations as consequence of supersymmetry, form a closed set of equations for Wilson loops and related quantities in the two dimensional super-gauge theory. We solve these equations. It appears that the planar Wilson loops are described by the Nambu string without folds. We also discuss how to put the model on a spatial lattice, where a peculiar gauge is chosen in order to keep one supersymmetry on the...

A continuum limit of the non-Hermitian spin-1/2 chain, conjectured recently to belong to the universality class of the noisy Burgers or, equivalently, Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation, is obtained and analyzed. The Galilean invariance of the Burgers equation is explicitly realized in the operator algebra. In the quasi-classical limit we find nonlinear soliton excitations exhibiting the $\omega\propto k^z$ dispersion relation with dynamical exponent $z=3/2$.

We present a very quick and powerful method for the calculation of heat-kernel coefficients. It makes use of rather common ideas, as integral representations of the spectral sum, Mellin transforms, non-trivial commutation of series and integrals and skilful analytic continuation of zeta functions on the complex plane. We apply our method to the case of the heat-kernel expansion of the Laplace operator on a $D$-dimensional ball with either Dirichlet, Neumann or, in general, Robin boundary...

Most of the widely studied modulator, switch, spectrum analyzer in integrated optics use Ti-diffused LiNbO3 waveguides. Improving single-mode fiber to waveguide coupling efficiency and realizing the fixed connection between them is one of the most fundamental problems. In our experiment, a direct coupling of single-mode fiber to waveguide is used. The major limiting factor in coupling is the uneven profile of mode field of the single-mode fiber and waveguide, and the accuracy in transverse...

FUNCTIONAL MODEL 30 CM CENTIMETER ION THRUSTER OPERATING
The Auraria Media Center conducted a needs assessment in the spring of 1994 to learn whether it correctly perceived, and how it can better serve, the changing educational technology needs of faculty. Faculty from the Community College of Denver, Metropolitan State College of Denver, and the University of Colorado at Denver responded to an anonymous survey. Based on the seven research questions, results show: (1) a substantial percentage of Auraria faculty see educational technology, including...

Given the exponential growth in the number of images stored in databases around the world, there is a clear need for computer-assisted means of searching images. Keywords and computed indices, referred to as metadata, can be used to tag images for subsequent retrieval. Most potential applications, however, will require searching for images on the basis of image content, but existing techniques for content-based search are either too slow, customized at great expense for a single application, or...

The main objective of this project was the analysis of the detection of trajectory signals in random motion noise. Results from experiments demonstrated that detection was limited by the probability of mismatch, not noise density per se; detection was based on a motion signal, not a form or position signal; detection was limited by higher-order aspects of motion processing, not the ratio of signal to noise in the primary motion detectors. The Yuille-Grzywacz "Motion Coherence" model...

We classify states saturating a double or a single supersymmetric positivity bound of a four-dimensional N=4 supersymmetry. The massive four-dimensional double-bound states (Bogomolny states) are shown to form a light-like representation of ten-dimensional supersymmetry. The single-bound states form a massive representation (centrino multiplet) of a four-dimensional supersymmetry. The first component of the centrino multiplet is identified with extreme black holes with regular horizon which...

I study the spontaneous breakdown of supersymmetry when higher-dimensional Yang-Mills or the type-I $SO(32)$ string theory are compactified on magnetized tori. Because of the universal gyromagnetic ratio $g=2$, the splittings of all multiplets are given by the product of charge times internal helicity operators. As a result such compactifications have two remarkable and robust features: {\it (a)} they can reconcile {\it chirality} with {\it extended} low-energy supersymmetry in the limit of...

In a recent letter -Phys. Rev. Lett. 73, 3331 (1995)-, the conclusion was reached that, in the one-dimensional Calogero model, only the second virial coefficient is affected by the statistical parameter $\alpha$, where $\alpha$ is related to the coupling constant $\kappa/ x_{ij}^2$ of the Calogero interaction by $\kappa=\alpha(\alpha+1)$. We argue that it is not so, i.e. all virial coefficients are affected, if the thermodynamic limit is properly taken.

Spectrophotometric indices for $18$ Galactic globular clusters, obtained from CCD observations and careful reductions, were used to determine reliable calibrations on metallicity $[Fe/H]$. The indices were measured in the bandpasses adopted by Burnstein et al. (\cite{BFGK84}). Adding other observations of Burnstein et al. (\cite{BFGK84}) we obtained our results from an homogeneous sample of indices for $26$ globular clusters. Relations with indices defined by other Authors and with metallicity...

The Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence (AFCEE) one-year bioventing test and evaluation project at Building 7705 has been completed. Figure 1 provides general site information and Table 1 provides a summary of initial, six-month, and one-year fuel respiration and degradation rates measured at several monitoring points. Overall, biodegradation rates have decreased over the one-year pilot test. These decreases are best explained by the reduction of contaminant levels as the bioventing...

We discuss the results of a campaign to monitor spectral variations in the low-luminosity Seyfert~1 galaxy NGC~4593, at X-rays, ultraviolet, optical and near IR frequencies. The observations and data analysis have been described in a companion paper (Santos-Lle\'o et al. 1994; Paper~1). The active nucleus in this galaxy is strongly and rapidly variable in all wavebands, implying that the continuum source is unusually compact. Its energy distribution from 1.2~$\mu$m to 1200~\AA\/ obeys a...

A description is given of how to construct (0,2) supersymmetric conformal field theories as coset models. These models may be used as non-trivial backgrounds for Heterotic String Theory. They are realised as a combination of an anomalously gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten model, right-moving supersymmetric fermions, and left-moving current algebra fermions. Requiring the sum of the gauge anomalies from the bosonic and fermionic sectors to cancel yields the final model. Applications discussed include...

The stability of a new class of hairy black hole solutions in the coupled system of Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs is examined, generalising a method suggested by Brodbeck and Straumann and collaborators, and Volkov and Gal'tsov. The method maps the algebraic system of linearised radial perturbations of the various field modes around the black hole solution into a coupled system of radial equations of Schr\"odinger type. No detailed knowledge of the black hole solution is required, except from...
