We present a derivation of the equation of motion for a test-particle in the framework of the nonsymmetric gravitational theory. Three possible couplings of the test-particle to the non-symmetric gravitational field are explored. The equation of motion is found to be similar in form to the standard geodesic equation of general relativity, but with an extra antisymmetric force term present. The equation of motion is studied for the case of a static, spherically symmetric source, where the extra...

A technique of ``approximate group analysis'' recently developed by Baikov, Gazizov and Ibragimov is applied to a differential approximation (otherwise referred to as an equivalent differential equation) corresponding to the finite difference approximation of a nonlinear advection equation on unstructured grid. We determine which groups from the infinite variety of groups admitted by a nonlinear advection equation ``survive'' the discretization. The situations arising for different choices of...

We investigate the gravitational behavior of spherical domain walls (bubbles) arising during the phase transitions in the early Universe. In the thin-wall approximation we show the existence of the new solution of Einstein equations with negative gravitational mass of bubbles and the reversed direction of time flow on the shell. This walls exhibit gravitational repulsion just as the planar walls are assumed to do. The equilibrium radius and critical mass of such objects are found for realistic...

We obtain form factors relevant for semileptonic $B\to D$ and $B\to D^*$ decays from a quenched lattice QCD calculation. Our results enable us to test Heavy-Quark Symmetry, determine the Isgur-Wise function as well as obtain the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix element $V_{cb}$ from a measurement, by the CLEO collaboration, of the differential decay rate for semileptonic $B\to D^*$ decays. We find that the Isgur-Wise function has a slope of $-(0.9\er{4}{4})$ at zero recoil and that...

We examine the meson-baryon interaction in the strangeness S=-1 sector using an effective chiral Lagrangian. Potentials are derived from this Lagrangian and used in a coupled-channel calculation of the low energy observables. The potentials are constructed such that in the Born approximation the s-wave scattering amplitude is the same as that given by the effective chiral Lagrangian, up to order $q^2$. Comparison is made with the available low energy hadronic data of the coupled $K^-p, \Sigma...

A detailed model of galactic evolution is proposed to explain both the iron content of the Intra-Cluster Medium (ICM) and of the ellipticals pertaining to the cluster. SNII are responsible for the production of Fe in the galaxies and of its partial ejection in the surrounding medium. A high formation rate of massive stars only ($m>3~{\rm M_{\sun}}$) at the very early stage of evolution of ellipticals, reminiscent of starburst galaxies, is advocated. The high rate of SNII explosions induces a...

A linear ion trap for frequency standard applications is provided with a plurality of trapping rods equally spaced and applied quadruple rf voltages for radial confinement of atomic ions and biased level pins at each end for axial confinement of the ions. The trapping rods are divided into two linear ion trap regions by a gap in each rod in a common radial plane to provide dc discontinuity, thus dc isolating one region from the other. A first region for ion-loading and preparation fluorescence...

Under the SDIO/IST support (grant N00014-90-J-1761), we have made progress in the investigation of the metal systems that are thermodynamically stable on GaAs. Successful growth of the single phase PtGa2 and CoGa on GaAs has been demonstrated by MOCVD (metal organic chemical vapor deposition) using mixed-metal organometallic precursors of limited volatility and by MBE (molecular beam epitaxy). Fundamental understanding of these thermodynamically stable compounds has been obtained. Our...

In this paper we address the question of how does the lateral interaction affect the formation and organization of receptive fields in a network composed of interacting neurons with Hebbian type learning. We will show how to partially decouple the single cell effects from the network effects, and how some phenomenological models can be seen as approximations to these learning networks. We show that the interaction effects the structure of receptive fields. We also demonstrate how the...

The development of the processes necessary for fabrication of sub-100nm heteroepitaxial Si(x)G3e(1 -x) structures in Si (100) substrates is described. The structures are required to be planar and definable by available patterning techniques (e.g. X-ray, e-beam, ion beam, or optical lithography). The report describes the investigation of two candidate patterning processes, enhanced ion beam etching, and standard e-beam lift off. In this paper the first step is taken toward a first-principles molecular theory of the liquid-semiconductor interface. The focus is on the degree of rigor that must be applied to the solvent in order to obtain a realistic description of the interfacial electronic properties. To accomplish this, two different water solvent geometries on the H/Si(111)1x1 surface are assumed, and the electronic structure of the system is calculated using two different models for the water molecules, one which...

For any integer $m>1$ we show that there exists a self-similar tiling with $2\pi/m$-rotational symmetry group and expansion $\lambda$ if and only if either $\lambda$ or $\lambda e^{2\pi i/m}$ is a complex Perron number for which $e^{2\pi i/m}$ is in $\Q[\lambda]$, respectively $Q[\lambda e^{2\pi...

High resolution numerical simulations of thermal convection in a rapidly rotating channel with gravity perpendicular to the rotation vector are described. The convecting columns are subject to a beta-effect resulting from cross-channel topographic vortex stretching. The symmetries of the problem allow many invariant wavenumber sets, and this property is associated with the existence of stable multiple-equilibria at modest supercriticality. The transition to chaotic behavior involves the...

A formulation of Poincare symmetry as an inner symmetry of field theories defined on a fixed Minkowski spacetime is given. Local P gauge transformations and the corresponding covariant derivative with P gauge fields are introduced. The renormalization properties of scalar, spinor and vector fields in P gauge field backgrounds are determined. A minimal gauge field dynamics consistent with the renormalization constraints is given.

From the Festival Floppies collection. Cuckoo for Windows is an electronic version of the traditional cuckoo clock. It is very easy and fun to use. When you run the program for the first time, a small window appears at the upper-left corner of your Windows' desktop. The clock shows the current time and at full hours the cuckoo appears at the small door and sings as many times as the number of hours. At half hours the cuckoo also sings once. As in a real cuckoo clock, this feature allows you to...

The technique of muon mean energy determination in multilayer detectors is developed. The mean energy is measured by means of average small bursts $m$ i.e. the number of electrons and positrons generated by muons in the detecting layers of device via three basic processes --- creation of $e^+e^-$ pairs, $\delta$-electrons and bremsestrahlung. The accuracy of the method is considered. Key words: muon energy, multilayer detectors.

In a recent PRL, Gonze et al claim that the density functional theory in Hohenberg-Kohn formulation is not valid for crystalline solids in a homogenious electric field. They introduce another theory, density-and-polarization functional theory, which has to substitute the DFT in the calculations of the long-wave dielectric response. We show that the theorem proven by Gonzo et al holds in addition to, and not instead of, the Hohenberg-Kohn theorem.

We carry out an analysis of the effect of a quenched magnetic field on the dynamics of the spherical Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin-glass model. We show that there is a characteristic time introduced by the presence of the field. Firstly, for times sufficiently small the dynamic scenario of the zero field case - with aging effects - is reproduced. Secondly, for times larger than the characteristic time one sees equilibrium dynamics. This dynamical behaviour is reconciled with the geometry of the...
