It is possible to construct representations of the Lorentz group using four-dimensional harmonic oscillators. This allows us to construct three-dimensional wave functions with the usual rotational symmetry for space-like coordinates and one-dimensional wave function for time-like coordinate. It is then possible to construct a representation of the Poincar\'e group for a massive particles having the O(3) internal space-time symmetry in its rest frame. This oscillator can also be separated into...

Borocarbide compounds with the formula RNi2B2C show interesting superconducting and magnetic properties and the coexistence of the two phenomena. BCS theory is extended to systems with underlying commensurate magnetic order. In the case of helical phases the technique may be extended to any Q-vector and there exists a well defined limit for incommensurate values. The way magnetic order influences superconductivity depends crucially on the details of both the magnetic structure and the electron...

This report summarises the recent studies of the Bose-Einstein Correlations (BEC) carried out by the four LEP experiments using hadronic Z$^0$ decay events and $e^+ e^-$ reactions leading to the WW decay final states. The three identical charged pion systems $\pi^{\pm} \pi^{\pm} \pi^{\pm}$ have been studied by OPAL with $4 \times 10^6$ hadronic Z$^0$ decays events. The genuine three-pion correlations corrected for Coulomb effects, were separated from the known two-pion correlations by a novel...

We derive the non-linear integral equations determining the free energy of the three-state pure bosonic Uimin-Sutherland model. In order to find a complete set of auxiliary functions, the anti-symmetric fusion procedure is utilized. We solve the non-linear integral equations numerically and see that the low-temperature behavior coincides with that predicted by conformal field theory. The magnetization and magnetic susceptibility are also calculated by means of the non-linear integral equation.

In this work we revisit questions recently raised in the literature associated to relevant but divergent amplitudes in the gauged NJL model. The questions raised involve ambiguities and symmetry violations which concern the model's predictive power at one loop level. Our study shows by means of an alternative prescription to handle divergent amplitudes, that it is possible to obtain unambiguous and symmetry preserving amplitudes. The procedure adopted makes use solely of {\it general}...

Near-infrared (2.2 $\mu m$) observations of a sample of 48 elliptical galaxies in the Coma cluster have been carried out and used to study the near-ir fundamental plane (FP) of ellipticals in this cluster. An rms scatter of 0.072 dex was found for this relation, similar to that of its optical counterpart, using the same sample of galaxies. This corresponds to an uncertainty of 18% in distances to individual galaxies derived from this relation. The sensitivity of the near-infrared FP to the star...

From the Dirac action on the world sheet, an effective action is obtained by integrating over the 4-dimensional fermion fields pulled back to the world sheet. This action consists of the Nambu-Goto area term with right dimensionful constant in front, extrinsic curvature action and the topological Euler characteristic term.

The dynamics of a class of cosmological models with collisionless matter and four Killing vectors is studied in detail and compared with that of corresponding perfect fluid models. In many cases it is possible to identify asymptotic states of the spacetimes near the singularity or in a phase of unlimited expansion. Bianchi type II models show oscillatory behaviour near the initial singularity which is, however, simpler than that of the mixmaster model.

The idea of electromagnetic action on a shaped-charge jet (SCJ) has a relatively long history. The first experiments familiar to the authors were performed under the guidance of M. A. Lavrentyev as early as 1957 1. In these experiments, small shaped charges (SC) of caliber 25 mm were used. A capacitor bank with a voltage of up to 50 kV was used as the electromagnetic energy source. The problem has not been studied in detail, but these experiments showed that a SCJ can be destroyed by passage of...

We analyze several signals at HERA and the Tevatron of a light $U(1)_B$ gauge boson ($\gamma_B$) coupling to baryon number. We show that the study of the production of $b \bar{b}$ pairs at the (upgraded) Tevatron can exclude $\gamma_B$ with masses ($m_B$) in the range $40 \lesssim m_B \lesssim 300$ GeV for $\gamma_B$ couplings ($\alpha_B$) greater than $2 \times 10^{-2}$ ($3 \times 10^{-3}$). We also show that the HERA experiments cannot improve the present bounds on $\gamma_B$. Moreover, we...

The contribution of an astrophysics group based in Milan to the science with the IUE satellite during its almost 20 years lifetime has focussed on high energy sources, of both galactic (LMXRB, HMXRB, and black hole candidates) and extragalactic (AGN) nature. The results of this long term research and in particular of the latest multiwavelength campaigns conducted simultaneously with IUE are reviewed here.

We present observations of the (field of the) Seyfert galaxy Mark290, which probes the high-velocity cloud (HVC) complex C, one of the largest HVCs. We find that this object has a metallicity of 0.094pm0.020(+0.022-0.019) times solar. We determine a lower limit to its distance of 5 kpc (z>3.5 kpc). If the gas is in thermal equilibrium with a hot halo, then it is also likely that D 3 Gyr ago (an "Old Magellanic Stream"; Toomre, quoted in Kerr & Sullivan 1969), or was formed when...

We have observed four fully reconstructed B0 -> D*+D*- candidates in 5.8 million Upsilon(4S) -> BBbar decays recorded with the CLEO detector. The background is estimated to be 0.31 +- 0.10 events. The probability that the background could produce four or more signal candidates with the observed distribution among D*+ and D*- decay modes is 1.1 X 10^{-4}. The measured decay rate, Br(B0 -> D*+D*-) = [6.2 +4.0-2.9 (stat) +- 1.0(syst)] X 10^{-4}, is large enough for this decay mode to be...

Hot, X-ray emitting gaseous halos around massive elliptical galaxies are a result of both stellar mass loss and inflow toward the overdensity from which giant ellipticals and their associated galaxy groups formed. The metal abundance in this gas contains important information about early star formation and past supernova activity. We find that Type II supernovae based on a Salpeter IMF, plus a small number of additional Type Ia supernovae, can explain the the density, temperature and abundance...

According to Brown County court records, the affair began on June 3, 1830, when O-Ke-Wa, identified as a Pawnee Indian, accidentally killed a Menominee hunter on the bores of the East River. In retaliation, Osh-Kosh with the aid of two other Menominees attacked and stabbed O-Ke-Wa several times in the chest, throat, shoulder and back. O-Ke-Wa died instantly. The attack took place in what has been described the heart of the Green Bay settlement. Chief Osh-Kosh was acquitted in the 1830 killing...

An explanation is proposed for the fact that pp-waves superpose linearly when they propagate parallely, while they interact nonlinearly, scatter and form singularities or Cauchy horizons if they are antiparallel. Parallel pp-waves do interact, but a generalized gravitoelectric force is exactly cancelled by a gravitomagnetic force. In an analogy, the interaction of light beams in linearized general relativity is also revisited and clarified, a new result is obtained for photon to photon...

The dynamical transport properties near the integer quantum Hall transition are investigated at zero temperature by means of the Dirac fermion approach. These properties have been studied experimentally at low frequency omega and low temperature near the nu=1 filling factor Hall transition, with the observation of an anusual broadening and an overall increase of the longitudinal conductivity Re sigma_{xx} as a function of omega. We find in our approach that, unlike for normal metals, the...

We present analytic and numerical results for two models, namely the minority model and the bar-attendance model, which offer simple paradigms for a competitive marketplace. Both models feature heterogeneous agents with bounded rationality who act using inductive reasoning. We find that the effects of crowding are crucial to the understanding of the macroscopic fluctuations, or `volatility', in the resulting dynamics of these systems.

We analyse the twist-three amplitudes that can give rise to single-spin asymmetries in hadron-hadron scattering; in so doing we bring to light a novel factorisation property. As already known, the requirement of an imaginary part leads to consideration of twist-three contributions that are also related to transverse spin in deep-inelastic scattering. In particular, when an external line becomes soft in contributions arising from three-parton correlators, the imaginary part of an internal...

The possibility of an increasing gravitational constant $G$ and its implication on the Earth's history are discussed. The model is consistent with geophysical and astronomical data. The number of days in early epochs predicted by the model is in agreement with those obtained from fossil corals. The model predicts that the Earth was initially cold and is gradually heating up during its course of evolution. The exact law for the variation of $G$ is still to be obtained from the variation of the...
