A summary of some recent studies in jet physics is given. Topics include leading particle production in light flavor events in e+e- annihilations, an analytical treatment of gluon and quark jets at the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (3NLO), and various studies performed at LEP and HERA involving separated gluon and quark jets.

When a relativistic electron bunch traverses a structure, strong electric fields are induced in its wake. We present measurements of the electric field as a function of time as measured at a fixed location in the beam line. For a 12 nC bunch of duration 4.2 ps FWHM, the peak field is measured >0.5 MV/m. Time resolution of ~5 ps is achieved using electro-optic sampling with a lithium tantalate (LiTaO_3) crystal and a short-pulse infrared laser synchronized to the beam. We present measurements...

We calculate the life time of a resonance in our recently developed framework for a test-particle description of transport processes for states with continuous mass spectra. The result differs from the expression commonly used in transport simulations but agrees with the one derived by Danielewicz and Pratt relating the life time to the scattering phase shift.

We calculate the spectrum of Lyapunov exponents for a point particle moving in a random array of fixed hard disk or hard sphere scatterers, i.e. the disordered Lorentz gas, in a generic nonequilibrium situation. In a large system which is finite in at least some directions, and with absorbing boundary conditions, the moving particle escapes the system with probability one. However, there is a set of zero Lebesgue measure of initial phase points for the moving particle, such that escape never...

General arguments as well as different approximations for the in-medium quark propagator in a quark-gluon plasma lead to quark dispersion relations that exhibit a minimum in one branch (plasmino). This minimum causes Van Hove singularities in the dilepton production rate and mesonic correlators, which might have observable consequences.

Preliminary results of neutron spectra measurements from Pb, W, and Na targets irradiated by 0.8 and 1.6 GeV protons are presented. Measurements have been carried out using the proton beam extracted from the ITEP synchrotron and the TOF technique. Neutron registration has been carried out using BICRON MAB-511 liquid scintillation counters. Spectra measured at angles of 30, 60, 90, 120, and 150 degrees have been compared with results of their simulation using the LAHET code system and the code...

Homogeneous neutron matter at subnuclear densities becomes unstable towards the formation of inhomogeneities. Depending on the average value of the neutron density one can observe the appearance of either bubbles, rods, tubes or plates embeded in a neutron gas. We estimate the quantum corrections to the ground state energy (which could be termed either shell correction or Casimir energy) of such phases of neutron matter. The calculations are performed by evaluating the contribution of the...

We note that orbifold boundary conditions that produce chiral fermion zero modes in compactified higher dimensional theories may distort scalar field vacuum expectation values, giving rise to nontrivial dependence on the extra dimensions. We illustrate this in a simple five dimensional model which has chiral fermion zero-modes stuck to fat branes. The model could provide a simple and explicit realization of the separation of quarks and leptons in the fifth dimension. We discuss the KK expansion...

We investigate (super) string theory on $AdS_3$ background based on an approach of free field realization. We demonstrate that this string theory can be reformulated as a string theory defined on a linear dilaton background along the transverse direction (``Liouville mode'') and compactified onto $S^1$ along a {\em light-like} direction. Under this reformulation we analyze the physical spectrum as that of a free field system, and discuss the consequences when we turn on the Liouville potential....

We present calculations of the invariant mass spectra of the $\Lambda$p system for the exclusive $p p \to K^+ \Lambda p$ reaction with the aim of studying the final state interaction between the $\Lambda$-hyperon and the proton. The reaction is described within a meson exchange framework and the final state $\Lambda p$ interaction is incorporated through an off-shell t-matrix for the $\Lambda p \to \Lambda p$ scattering, constructed using the available hyperon-nucleon (YN) potentials. The cross...

For many next-generation high intensity proton accelerator applications including the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), superconducting (SC) RF provides the technology of choice for the linac. In designing the superconducting cavity, several features, such as peak fields, inter-cell coupling, mechanical stiffness, field flatness, external Q, manufacturability, shunt impedance, higher order mode (HOM), etc., should be considered together. A systematic approach to determine the optimum cavity...

A detailed spectroscopic study of the ISO-SWS data of the red giant Alpha Tau is presented, which enables not only the accurate determination of the stellar parameters of Alpha Tau, but also serves as a critical review of the ISO-SWS calibration. This study is situated in a broader context of an iterative process in which both accurate observations of stellar templates and cool star atmosphere models are involved to improve the ISO-SWS calibration process as well as the theoretical modelling of...

Two subtle aspects of brane intersections are investigated. The first concerns the `half-branes' that arise in discussions of the Hanany-Witten effect, often in the D0/D8 setting. The second involves the validity of seemingly singular classical BPS brane intersections. A study of holomorphic curves in the background of a Kaluza-Klein monopole and the associated reduction to type IIA supergravity sheds light on both issues. Many seemingly singular D2/D6 intersections are shown to lift to smooth...

In this highly speculative note we conjecture that it may be possible to understand features of coincident D-branes, such as the appearance of enhanced non-abelian gauge symmetry, in a purely geometric fashion, using a form of geometry known as scheme theory. We give a very brief introduction to some relevant ideas from scheme theory, and point out how these ideas work in special cases.

The influence of a macroscopic time-dependent threshold on the retrieval process of three-state extremely diluted neural networks is examined. If the threshold is chosen appropriately in function of the noise and the pattern activity of the network, adapting itself in the course of the time evolution, it guarantees an autonomous functioning of the network. It is found that this self-control mechanism considerably improves the retrieval quality, especially in the limit of low activity, including...

Gnome-o-Phone, or gphone for short, is an Internet telephone. In other words, if you and your friends have computers with sound cards and network connections, you can use gphone to talk to each other and save money on phone bills. Gphone is definitely a work in progress, and you probably shouldn't bet your business on it. If it breaks, you can keep both pieces. Don't be too hard on the program, though. Although the user interface is a bit rough, gphone does actually work pretty well.

The anisotropic XY-model in a transverse field (s=1/2) on the one-dimensional alternating superlattice (closed chain) is considered. The solution of the model is obtained by introducing a generalized Jordan-Wigner transformation which maps the system onto a non-interacting fermion gas. The exact excitation spectrum is determined by reducing the problem to a diagonalization of a block matrix, and it is shown that it is numerically identical to the one obtained by using the approximate transfer...

We analyse the mass distribution in the core of A383 (z=0.188), one of 12 X-ray luminous clusters at z~0.2 selected for a comprehensive and unbiased study of the mass distribution in massive clusters. Deep HST imaging reveals a wide variety of gravitationally lensed features in A383, including a giant arc formed from the strongly-lensed images of 2 background galaxies, 2 radial arcs, several multiply-imaged arcs and numerous arclets. Based upon the constraints from the various lensed features,...

In this thesis we develop a new automatic synthesis algorithm based on motion transformation, which produces new motions by combining and/or deforming existing motions. Current motion transformation techniques are low to mid level tools that are limited in the range and/or precision of deformations they can make to a motion or groups of motions. We believe these limitations follow from treating the motions as largely unstructured collections of signals. Consequently, the first contribution of...

The quasidegeneracy approximation [V. A. Yurovsky, A. Ben-Reuven, P. S. Julienne, and Y. B. Band, J. Phys. The approximation describes phenomena, such as counterintuitive transitions and saturation (incomplete population transfer), not predictable by the assumption of independent crossings. We derive a path-integral Schwinger-Keldysh approach for quantum spin systems. This is achieved by means of a semionic representation of spins as fermions with imaginary chemical potential. The major simplifying feature in comparison with other representations (Holstein-Primakoff, Dyson-Maleev, slave bosons/fermions etc) is that the local constraint is taken into account exactly. As a result, the standard diagram technique with usual Feynman codex is constructed. We illustrate the application...

This paper examines efficient predictive broad-coverage parsing without dynamic programming. In contrast to bottom-up methods, depth-first top-down parsing produces partial parses that are fully connected trees spanning the entire left context, from which any kind of non-local dependency or partial semantic interpretation can in principle be read. We contrast two predictive parsing approaches, top-down and left-corner parsing, and find both to be viable. In addition, we find that enhancement...

We consider the supergravity dual of the N=1* theory at finite temperature by applying the Polchinski-Strassler construction to the black D3 brane solution of Type IIB supergravity. At finite temperature the 5-brane probe action is minimized when the probe falls to the horizon, although metastable minima with r>>r_H persist for a range of temperatures. This is an expository note on Fedosov's construction of deformation quantization. Given a symplectic manifold and a connection on it, we show how to calculate the star-product step by step. We draw simple diagrams to solve the recursive equations for the Fedosov connection and for flat sections of the Weyl algebra bundle corresponding to functions. We also reflect on the differences of symplectic and Riemannian geometries.
