We consider the long-time evolution of weakly perturbed discrete nonlinear Schroedinger breathers. While breather growth can occur through nonlinear interaction with one single initial linear mode, breather decay is found to require excitation of at least two independent modes. All growth and decay processes of lowest order are found to disappear for breathers larger than a threshold value.

We study a gauge coupling unification scenario based on a non-supersymmetric 5-dimensional model. Through an orbifold compactification, we obtain the Standard Model with split multiplets on a 4-dimensional wall, which is compatible with a grand unification.

We first discuss, on a no-QGP basis, the two prominent indications of (a) enhanced strangeness production and of (b) anomalous $J/\psi $-suppression: We elaborate in particular on a recent idea of antihyperon production solely by multi-mesonic reactions. As a possible source for an enhanced dissociation of $c \bar{c}$ pairs we summarize the findings within the 'early'-comover absorption scenario of prehadronic string excitations. As an exotic candidate we then finally adress the stochastic...

We apply the Continuous Time Random Walk (CTRW) framework, introduced in finance by Scalas et al., to the analysis of the probability distribution of time intervals between two consecutive trades in the case of BTP futures prices traded at LIFFE in 1997. Results corroborate the validity of the CTRW approach for the description of the temporal evolution of financial time series.

These techniques utilize observed properties such as the emission line profile variability, the time delays between simultaneous optical/X-ray light curves curves, the light curves of eclipsing systems and the pulsed emission from the compact object in order to reconstruct the accretion disc's line emissivity (Doppler...

Observed properties of GRBs, WR stars and their CO-cores in the end of evolution are analyzed. A possible bimodality of the observed GRB energy distribution ($10^{48}$ erg for GRB9809425; $3\times 10^{51}\div 2\times 10^{54}$ erg for others) is in accord with the bimodal mass distribution of relativistic objects ($M_{NS}=(1.35\pm 0.15) M_\odot$; $M_{BH}=(4\div 15) M_\odot$). The peculiarity of SN1998bw can be related to the rotation of the collapsing CO-core. The expected galactic collapse rate...

We discuss the implementations of the Bose-Einstein effect from asymmetric sources in Monte Carlo generators. A comparison of LEP data with results from the PYTHIA/JETSET code with the standard procedure imitating the effect and with the results from the weight method (with weights depending in various ways on components of momenta differences) is presented. We show that in this last method one can reproduce the experimental hierarchy of the source radii.

Recent advances in submicrometer technology have made it possible to confine the two-dimensional electron gas into high-mobility semi-conductor heterostructures. Such structure with a lattice of electron-depleted circular obstacles are called quantum antidot lattices, or quantum Lorentz gas systems. By using the semiclassical scattering theory, we show that quantum interference in finite-size open Lorentz gas systems is expected to reflect the difference between normal and anomalous diffusions,...

Local isotropy, or the statistical isotropy of small scales, is one of the basic assumptions underlying Kolmogorov's theory of universality of small-scale turbulent motion. While, until the mid-seventies or so, local isotropy was accepted as a plausible approximation at high enough Reynolds numbers, various empirical observations that have accumulated since then suggest that local isotropy may not obtain at any Reynolds number. These notes examine in some detail the isotropic and anisotropic...

We performed a network traffic simulation to clarify the mechanism producing self-similar traffic originating in the transport layer level. Self-similar behavior could be observed without assuming a long-tailed distribution of the input file size. By repeating simulations with modified TCP we found that the feedback mechanism from the network, such as packet transmission driven by acknowledgement packets, plays an essential role in explaining the self-similarity observed in the actual traffic.

The electronic properties of thin films present quantum-size effects, which are a consequence of the finite size of the system. Here we focus on the investigation of these effects on the electronic energy loss of charged particles moving parallel with thin metallic films. The energy loss is calculated, within linear-response theory, from the knowledge of the density-response function of the inhomogeneous electron system, which we evaluate either in the random-phase approximation or with the use...

The intent of this project was to study the operation of a Smith-Purcell FEL (SP-FEL) when driven by the short, high-power, relativistic electron micropulses produced by the NCCU Electron Gun. The motivation was the development of an SP-FEL that would bridge the wavelength range from the sub-mm up to the infrared, a wavelength range for which an easily tunable, coherent source would be a major advance. During the period of this project, the electron gun, the interaction chamber, gratings, and...

We establish the phase diagram of the five-dimensional anisotropic Abelian Higgs model by mean field techniques and Monte Carlo simulations. The anisotropy is encoded in the gauge couplings as well as in the Higgs couplings. In addition to the usual bulk phases (confining, Coulomb and Higgs) we find four-dimensional ``layered'' phases (3-branes) at weak gauge coupling, where the layers may be in either the Coulomb or the Higgs phase, while the transverse directions are confining.

The vortex structure in superconducting stripe states is studied according to the Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory on the two-dimensional Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor sites pairing interaction. The vortex is trapped at the outside region of the stripe line, where the superconductivity is weak. The superconducting coherence length along the stripe direction becomes long. There are no eminent low-energy electronic states even near the vortex core. These characters resemble the Josephson vortex...

We give a dimension formula for the space of logarithm-free series solutions to an A-hypergeometric (or a GKZ hypergeometric) system. In the case where the convex hull spanned by A is a simplex, we give a rank formula for the system, characterize the exceptional set, and prove the equivalence of the Cohen-Macaulayness of the toric variety defined by A with the emptiness of the exceptional set. Furthermore we classify A-hypergeometric systems as analytic D-modules.

Results of our shell-model calculations concerning the determination of empirical parameters of inter-ionic potentials and the formation energies of point defects in LiNbO3 are presented. We employed the relaxed fitting method which is particularly appropriate for the modeling of low-symmetry structure. Spin transport properties of a spin-polarized two-dimensional electron gas are studied in the presence of electron-electron interactions. Longitudinal and transverse spin diffusion coefficients are calculated with the quantum transport equation which includes many-particle effects in the random phase approximation. We find that the $e$-$e$ scattering, which does not contribute to charge drift mobility, has a significant contribution to the spin diffusion. Thus, $e$-$e$ interaction causes...

(abridged) We report here a factor of 5.7 higher total CO flux in Arp~244 (the ``Antennae'' galaxies) than that previously accepted in the literature (thus a total molecular gas mass of 1.5x10$^{10}$ Msun), based on our fully sampled CO(1-0) observations at the NRAO 12m telescope. Our observations show that the molecular gas peaks predominately in the disk-disk overlap region between the nuclei, similar to the far-infrared (FIR) and mid-infrared (MIR) emission. The bulk of the molecular gas is...
